Friarage Maternity Centre

About Friarage Maternity Centre

The Centre consists of the Midwifery Led Unit, Community Midwifery Hub and Maternity Day Unit. Situated on the first floor at the Friarage Hospital.

Friarage Maternity Centre Description

The Friarage Hospital serves a population of 122, 000 people covering an area of 1, 000 square miles across Hambleton, Richmondshire and parts of Harrogate. Maternity services at the Friarage underwent changes in 2014 and we now have a fantastic maternity centre which we are trying to encourage as many people as possible to use.

This page has been created to improve local peoples knowledge on the Friarage Maternity Centre and the services that we offer. We encourage you to use this page to share feedback on your experience and leave your reviews in order to help future women make an informed choice about where they would like to have their baby.

We would also like people to share information about local events /services for pregnant women, new mums and babies such as breastfeeding groups, pregnancy yoga, aqua natal classes etc.

The Friarage Maternity Centre consists of the Midwifery Led Unit, Community Midwifery Hub and Maternity Day Unit.

The Midwifery Led Unit offers a relaxed, home from home environment, suitable for low risk women and their families. We are a team of highly skilled and experienced midwives who are passionate about providing one to one, individualised care. Continuous support in labour is associated with less use of pharmacological analgesia, fewer operative births and fewer reports of dissatisfaction with birth. At our unit a one to one midwifery model is adopted in labour and includes assisting women in their choice of many pharmacological methods of pain relief such as oral analgesia, entonox and meptid injections. We also support with non-pharmacological methods of pain relief such as the birthing pool, aromatherapy, massage, sterile water injections, breathing and relaxation techniques, positions and movement etc.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence confirms that midwifery led care during labour is SAFEST for women with straightforward pregnancies. Evidence suggests women who planned birth in a midwifery led unit have significantly fewer interventions including substantially fewer caesarean sections and more 'normal births' than women who planned birth in an obstetric unit.

We offer a friendly 24 hour service, 7 days a week. Birth partners are welcome to stay in our en-suite rooms during and after the birth until you choose to go home, usually within 24 hours. Open and flexible visiting applies.

The Friarage Maternity Day unit offers care from early pregnancy onwards dealing with a broad range of pregnancy related conditions and problems. It offers a multidisciplinary team and has close communication between the GP's, community midwives.

The Friarage Community Hub offers a wide range of services for ante natal and postnatal care. These include antenatal classes and appointments, postnatal checks, baby weighing's, bloodspot tests, hearing screening, open access to breastfeeding support and much more.

Please continue to share your experience of the FMC by leaving a review, writing a comment or sharing a photo. We love reading them all & so do the other lovely mum's and mums-to-be.
Thank you to Ellie for sharing her experience and photo of her gorgeous baby Ivy. Congratulations from us all at the FMC.
Our beautiful baby girl Ivy Eva Brand was brought into the world on 5th August 2018. We definitely made the right decision choosing the Friarage to deliver our baby and I had ...the most wonderful birthing experience from start to finish. The midwives were absolutely astonishing - the care, compassion, support and help we received throughout my whole labour and post natal stay was outstanding. Thank you so much for helping to bring our precious little girl into the world and ensuring that as first time parents we were extremely well supported. We will most certainly be back. All our love Tom, Ellie and Ivy Brand xx A little special mention in particular to Lisa, Genevieve and Laura - absolutely wonderful human beings!!!!

Thanks to Vicky for sharing her lovely experience with us at the FMC. We are so glad you enjoyed our birthing pool. Congratulations on the birth of Charlotte.
On the 31st July your amazing team of midwives helped us bring our beautiful baby girl into this world. I had the best experience during my labour - it was everything I had wished for. I really wanted to labour in the pool. My birthing plan was to use the pool, no bright lights and soft music in the background. When we ...walked into the room the room was already set out how I had imagined. It was heavenly. I am so pleased my pregnancy allowed us to use your facilities as we really did not want to go anywhere else. We can not thank you enough - with special recognition to Laura and Jill - our heros. Love Vicky, Simon and Charlotte Lawrie xx

"For expectant and adopting parents and those with babies under 1. Each week I invite a different speaker or introduce a topic myself with themes that promote well-being and discovery as parents make the transition to becoming a new family. As an Antenatal Teacher and Postnatal Practitioner my focus is on nurturing the adults in the the group, giving opportunities to explore the challenges and triumphs of parenthood and meet new friends. All too often nowadays adults start a family, miles from their own families and with no support network, which can make life incredibly hard. My goal is to facilitate the formation of new networks so that parents feel supported on their journey, can make choices that feel right for them and can enjoy life." Cathryn Dorling

Would just like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all involved and how amazing my experience giving birth to my son was at the friarage Maternity centre on 28/1/18.

Having quite a stressful birth in another hospital with my first I was quite anxious as to what to expect this time around. I needn't have worried at all.

From the moment I arrived at the centre I felt relaxed, in control and as calm as I could be given the situation. Tracey our midwife was unintrusive and very supportive throughout, letting my body take control and guiding me through every moment calmly which led me to have a very relaxed, natural and uncomplicated birth.

The after care was outstanding too. Both my partner and I were well looked after and there was always someone on hand to answer any questions and help with getting breastfeeding under way.

Not once were we made to feel an inconvenience and that no one had the time to help in anyway we needed.

I really couldn't praise the maternity centre enough and would highly recommend to anyone considering going here. It's an amazing Facility and one I would hate to see us loose.

Again I would like to say a massive thank you in particular to Tracey and Leah for all your help and support throughout the birth and post care and to the lovely ladies that let me come in for an hour one evening for extra breast feeding support.

I would also like to thank Ruth, Bev and Claire who looked after us pre and post pregnancy and for all your support afterwards to ensure both my baby, family and I got off to the best start we could. ļæ½

What an amazing service I received today. Having breast feeding issues and doubting myself that I could continue , I was invited into the friarage for the day to be given support and help. The support I was given and reassurance was amazing. I and Bertie were looked after superbly and wanted for nothing while we were there. The centre is much more than just a delivery suit itā€™s a place of help advice and support also. Thank you

User

Well what can I say other than a massive thank you to all the staff at Friarage Maternity Centre for the incredible care and support throughout our birthing experience. A massive thank you to Kate and Jo for delivering our beautiful baby boy into the world safely and with complete care and understanding for all our needs. The experience will be one we will never forget and we are truly grateful for the way we were looked after throughout our whole stay. Lukas Orlando Bishop was delivered on Friday 27th April at 2pm weighing 8lb 10oz and we could not be happier. Thank you so much ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½

We were booked in to go to the Friarage and even though we didn't quite make it and had an unplanned home birth, we were whisked off to the Friarage afterwards. The care and support I was given over the 24 hours I was in was fantastic. All the midwives I met were lovely and they could not do enough for me, my husband and my little boy. We had a few issues with breast feeding which they were extremely helpful with and they were in no rush to discharge me until I felt confident enough to go it alone. I don't feel like I would have got this quality of care anywhere else so thank you to everyone in the Friarage Maternity Centre for such a great experience.

User

We just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone at the Friarage for their fantastic care and support throughout the delivery of our baby boy on 11/1/18. All of the midwives were absolutely brilliant and could not have done any more to make us feel safe and guide us through labour. We cannot recommend the Friarage enough. We had some problems getting our little boy to breastfeed effectively and the ladies on the unit were fabulous in helping us through a difficult time. We were able to stay on the unit until we felt confident to feed. The time you took to help us with feeding was invaluable.Thank you for making the birth of our first baby extra special - you gave us a fantastic positive experience that we will never forget. Love from Nicky, Dan and baby Isaac x x x

We have just had our first baby at the Friarage on Christmas Eve and the care both me and my partner received before, during and after was excellent! I was in the birthing pool for the majority of my labour and I would recommend it to anybody thinking about it! The Friarage has a home away from home feel that puts you at ease and the midwives were just amazing! I really can't thank the midwives enough for the care they provide ļæ½

We had our baby boy Jack at the Friarage on 11.12.17 and were so so grateful for the amazing support and help from the Gill, Amber, Kirsty and everyone at the maternity centre. We had such a positive experience delivering him which I never thought Iā€™d say! Unfortunately I had to be transferred to James Cook afterwards but I wouldnā€™t have changed a thing about where we chose to deliver and canā€™t thank the team enough for all they did for our little family. The transfer was done so quickly and Gill and Amber supported me through everything and even stayed up at James Cook for a while.

Thank you all so muchļæ½

We had an amazing experience at the Friarage for the birth of our first baby 2 weeks ago. From the first phone call to the midwives to the moment we left, the level of 1 to 1 care we received was just incredible.

We first came in while still in the early stages of labour, and although we ended up going back home that evening, I was well looked after, fed and given a gorgeous lavender bath! I felt no pressure to leave and I was helped to feel relaxed and calm.

During the delivery of our baby I knew we were in safe hands, and Kate our midwife could not have been more supportive. After the birth the support and care continued, everything from help with breastfeeding to the endless supply of tea and toast! We canā€™t thank the midwives who looked after us enough.

The Friarage is a truly amazing place and is highly recommended by us!

User

We experienced nothing but friendly staff who supported my wife to deliver a healthy baby boy. Thank you for all of your hard work in supporting us. Staff were approachable but also noticed that at points we found things a little tricky but were able to broach things in a caring, compassionate and sensitive way. Your guidance and reassurance to both my wife and myself is valued and we are very grateful that this local service is available for us to access. We would definitely recommend the Centre- please feel free to pass this post on as feedback to your Clinical Matron.

User

The most amazing place to have a baby so supportive and caring. It was so lovely to have midwives that care about your birth plan and how you would like to give birth. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful facility. Cannot fault the team there they are all incredible. Thank you for such a wonderful birth experience. Xx

So pleased to have the unique opportunity to have had a great natural water birth at the Friarage almost a week ago. The midwives and staff were amazing during and after labour. Even going for hearing test with baby a few days later made it feel like coming home.

My partner and I cannot praise the staff at the Friarage Maternity Centre enough. Giving birth is so much more than a ā€˜medical procedureā€™ it is a time when a woman can feel lonely, vulnerable and scared however, the staff went out of their way to ensure I felt safe, relaxed and genuinely cared for which in turn made me feel at ease, comfortable and made everything a positive experience when bringing my child into the world.

My lovely midwife went out of her way to ensure I had a calming and natural birthing experience, I opted for a water birth and she set up lovely candles, music, lighting and added lavender oil to the water too which was also set at the perfect temperature.

After the birth the level of outstanding care continued, nothing was too much trouble and I was able to stay for a long as I needed and never once felt like I had to leave. My partner and I had our own room and were both able to sleep undisturbed, and once we did wake up we had lots of tea and toast on tap! However, most importantly the staff were there for my baby and I; assisting me with establishing breastfeeding and helping me with any questions or concerns that I had.

All in all the woman-centred care at the FMC is excellent and I genuinely canā€™t fault it in any way. Would highly recommend to all expecting mums to be.

My husband and I had our 2nd baby girl on 27th June at the Friarage. It was a wonderful experience made really special by our midwife Sam Welford who put us at ease from the moment we arrived. She had filled the pool, set the room up for us so it felt comfortable and relaxing. She gave us space and privacy but supported and encouraged us throughout the labour. The next day we were looked after by a different midwife who was just as attentive, she helped with feeding and couldn't do enough to help! Cannot recommended this place highly enough. We are so grateful to everyone who helped bring our baby girl into the world safely.

User

Just over a week ago we finally got to meet out beautiful baby girl Isobel grace surprising us 15 days early and arriving pretty quickly we are so lucky to have the friarage so close, all the staff where amazing so helpful and supportive especially Deborah who delivered Isobel she was fantastic couldnā€™t of hoped for a better labour!

User

I was all booked to go the the friarage for the birth of my second child, having chose JCUH for my first as I didnā€™t know what to expect, I knew I wanted to go to the friarage this time around.

The staff were so amazing. I didnā€™t quite get the relaxing water birth Iā€™d planned as I arrived only 3 minutes before my baby was born. Blue lighted in an ambulance as it all happened so fast!!! I was full of panic but the Midwives and the room were peaceful and relaxing, candles and lights lit and the pool was perfectly warm to get in if I had had the time. Afterwards we were left to take it all in,in a huge room. Midwives there to help if we needed or left us alone enough to chill out too. I didnā€™t need to stay the night but I would happily of if needs be. Would definately recommended the friarage. It was the fastest but nicest experience and I canā€™t thank the midwives (and ambulance crew) enough. ļæ½ļæ½

User

I just want to start with a massive thank you to the midwife team. From the moment I arrived to the moment I left they were very attentive and reassuring.

As it was my first baby I didnā€™t know what to expect the team made me feel as relaxed as can be.

I ended up having a water birth which was fantastic with lavender oils and dim lighting which helped to relax.

I would highly recommend going to the FMC over anywhere else.

I wouldnā€™t of wanted to have my little Bettie Rose anywhere else!

User

I had the most amazing experience at the FMC. The care and support from all the midwives was fantastic. It really was luxury treatment and care before, during and after birth. Thank you so much for giving us such positive memories of the day we welcomed our baby girl into the world.

User

I don't even know where to begin!! After initially telling James Cook we were on our way we ended up having to take a detour to the Friarage and it was the best detour we could of imagined. We turned up with our 3 year old in tow and nothing was ever an issue! I was only in the hospital 1 1/2 before our little princess made her appearance but I have never felt in such calm safe and capable hands as I did with Lyndsey.. she gave me the most amazing back rub all the way through and was so encouraging.. from arriving unannounced to all the offers of tea and toast at 4am in the morning to all the support with breast feeding and even the discharge chat. Nothing was ever too much trouble and we honestly cannot thank the staff enough for looking after us and helping us welcome our little Ruby into the world ļæ½.. honestly if you're unsure wether to go to the Friarage or not.. go as it is a total different birthing experience!
