ABOUT US:

As local cyclists and amateur snappers (photography) we thought we would do a photo diary of the construction of the new Sustrans cycle greenway which began in 2011. We then decided it would be a good idea to start a facebook page as people were taking an interest in what we were doing. It's spiraled from there.

RULES ON THE FACEBOOK PAGE:

Trouble-making comments are monitored and removed hastily without warning, the writer will not be aware of the removal, but they will still appear to the writer but not have an audience.

All visitors posts are regulated and have to be approved by admins. Advertisements, events or activities not related to Dewsbury /Ossett greenway or Dewsbury or Ossett will not be allowed on the page. Collaboration with other events or activities on other greenways in the local area will be shown.

Due to threats, spam and offensive messages in our inbox we have removed it.

RESIDENTIAL:

We get many complaints from local residents who are juxtaposed to the greenway, regarding antisocial behaviour around it; unfortunately we do not have any legal authority over the use or misuse of the greenway, BUT, it is our public duty to police it by vigilantly filming any anti-social behaviour we do find and we will and do report it as evidence to authorities. If you wish to file a complaint regarding something you have seen or have recorded (do not put yourself at risk) on the greenway, please contact officials via the inserted links below.

IF YOU HAVE WITNESSED ANY SERIOUS CRIMINAL ACTIVITY ON THE GREENWAY:
Please either contact the Police on 101 or 999 immediately.

RULES ON THE GREENWAY:

The Laws:

DOG FOULING : PICK UP YOUR DOG POO AND TAKE IT HOME! ! ! You can be given an on-the-spot fine if you don’t clean up after your dog. The amount varies from council to council. It’s often £50 and can be as much as £80. If you refuse to pay the fine, you can be taken to court and fined up to £1, 000. Registered blind dog owners can’t be fined.

NOT ALLOWED:
It is against the law to drive any engine motor vehicles ie: cars, quad bikes, motorbikes, trails bikes and also caravans. any anti-social behaviour will be reported to the police.

CARS SPEEDING DOWN SANDS LANE:
It has been brought to our attention that cars are speeding down this lane to get to the cricket and football grounds. Walkers and cyclists in particular should be careful when exiting from the greenway on to Sands Lane.

CYCLISTS SPEEDING
It has also been brought to our attention that some cyclists go very fast past walkers without slowing down. On the flip side, groups of dog walkers should pay attention to what their animals are doing when cyclists are about, also extended dog leads.

ALLOWED:
Bicycles, electric bicycles restricted to (15. 5 mph, ebikes) and disability scooters.

Horses: Where a route follows the course of a bridleway or restricted byway there is a statutory obligation to provide a route that is available for horse riders. It has been brought to our attention that horse riders are not picking up their manure, this has caused some minor accidents.

Canal towpath: Pedestrians have priority over cyclists on the towpath.

Issue reporting: Vandalism, missing or vandalized signs, a blockage on route, or path maintenance issues please contact (Sustrans Yorkshire) below.

More info:

Kirklees Council has contracted Sustrans, the engineering charity that works in partnership with local authorities to develop the national cycle network, to build the new traffic-free cycling and walking route near Dewsbury town centre.

This first phase will take cyclists and walkers out from Dewsbury town centre to Sands Lane playing fields and use the former railway embankments and viaduct over the River Calder to provide a route to Preston Street, Earlsheaton and to the canal towpath of the Dewsbury Cut in Savile Town.

In preparation for construction there has been some clearance of trees and scrub along the route. As well as creating space for the path there will be benefits for wildlife through increasing the structural and species diversity of the woodland. The selection of trees for removal has been made in consultation with the council’s forestry and biodiversity officers and is in keeping with the recommendations of the ecological assessment carried out as part of the project’s feasibility study.

Kirklees Council is working to secure funding through Sustrans’ national ‘Connect 2’ project which is funded by the Big Lottery. If successful, this will enable continuation of a second phase of construction of the route through the tunnel to Earlsheaton.

This project is modelled on the successful Spen Valley Greenway style of route which has proved very popular. This new route will enable people in the local communities of Earlsheaton and Savile Town to access Dewsbury Town Centre along a traffic-free corridor and offer them a choice of how to get around on foot or by cycle to improve their health and access local services and green spaces.

Choosing to walk and cycle brings better health for individuals and communities and will contribute to the regeneration of Dewsbury creating a better environment and a brighter, greener future for Dewsbury.

Cllr Paul Kane, who chairs the Dewsbury Regeneration Board, welcomes this project. He said: “As a lifelong resident of Dewsbury and ward councillor for Earlsheaton I can see the potential of bringing the disused railway corridor back in to public use. The Spen Valley Greenway has been such an asset to communities in the Spen Valley and I look forward to this Dewsbury route giving people opportunities to walk and cycle in a safe, traffic-free environment, making it easier to get to work, school and to reach green spaces at Sands Lane playing fields. ”

He added: "This is a golden opportunity to tackle some of the health issues raised in the Health Inequalities report which highlighted the effects of inactivity within certain sections of the Dewsbury community, it is a vast improvement in the connectivity within the town. "

Dependant on funding, and working with Wakefield District Council, the complete project in the future will see a route linking Dewsbury Town Hall with Ossett Town Hall. This will open up the former railway tunnel at Earlsheaton and allow people in Chickenley, Ossett, Horbury and further afield to get to Dewsbury on foot or by bicycle to reach the railway station, sports centre, the market and the many shops.

The council would like local people to get involved in the project and have opportunities to influence how the route develops, for example by:
• agreeing the design and location of amenities like public seating
• planting trees and helping wildlife
• looking after the route and keeping it clean and tidy
• organising activities like walks, bike rides, and picnics.

TOTAL COST OF THE GREENWAY.

£1. 4 million pounds.
