About Gambia School Support

Gambia School Support (GSS) UK charity 1176136 operates 3 nursery schools in Brufut, The Gambia (570 children and 26 staff).

Gambia School Support Description

Gambia School Support (GSS) was started by Josh Dale-Harris in Nov 2014 to support the A. V. I. school which was founded by Ton van Iperen in 2010. On 6 December 2017 GSS was registered charity 1176136 by the Charity Commission.

It is a nursery school with around 180 children in 5 classes aged between 3-6 years old. It is now operated by the Gambian AVI Schools Charity which was registered in The Gambia in June 2017. GSS works closely with the AVI SC and with MoBSE the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

The Headmaster Mr Balla Jallow has 8 staff of whom 4 are qualified teachers.

The A. V. I. makes a critical difference to the lives of these children by providing early education that they would not be starting until they were 7 years old.
Powdered milk and vitamin pills to provide a much needed suplement to their diet.
We pay a medical assistant to visit 3 times a week and she identifies and treats minor ailments and refers on more serious diseases (e. g. malaria). She supervises a twice yearly deworming programme and also instructs the children in hygiene and dental care.

ALL expenses of GSS are borne by the trustees. We ensure that every penny raised arrives in The Gambia without deduction and is spent in an ethical, efficient and economical way, demonstrating to both Gambians and donors alike that small sums of money, effectively spent, can and will change Africa.
