In a remote bar in rural Ireland, an unexpected visit from a young woman who has recently moved to the area prompts talk of fairies, folklore and unquiet spirits. As the drink flows and the local lads’ stories become increasingly frightening, it’s clear their visitor has something on her mind; and a tale to tell that’ll stop them in their tracks.
... Voted one of the most significant plays of the 20th century in a National Theatre poll, this spellbinding play is by turns hilarious, moving, and deeply chilling. Be warned. It may haunt you long after the curtain has fallen.
'The play of the decade... a modern masterpiece' (Express)

THE WEIR opens on Saturday 8th December. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get goosebumps - but the only thing to be REALLY frightened of is missing such a brilliant cast in this award winning, unique, play.... Christmas is a busy time, but please do try to squeeze in a visit to Brendan's bar. You won't regret it. https://geoffreywhitworth.savoysystems.co .uk/TheGeoffreyWh…/

by Erich Maria Remarque Adapted for the stage by Robin Kingsland Directed by Mike Higginson 10th to 17th November 2018
Adapted from the 1928 novel by Erich Remarque, a veteran of World War One, the play describes the hardships, mental and physical, endured by a group of young soldiers in the trenches. Despite the horrors of war, they endure through friendship and broad, and sometimes bawdy, humour.
... We are delighted to have the permission of the Remarque Estate to perform Robin Kingsland’s stunning adaption, first performed by Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company in 2006.
Whilst the play is about eight German soldiers, the moral behind it, laying bare the futility of war, is of universal application. Our production will mark the 100th Anniversary of the Armistice in November 1918.

by Mary O'Malley 13th to 20th October 2018
There are three Marys - not so unremarkable in a convent school. Mary McGinty has an illicit boyfriend, Derek, a mod with a speech impediment. Mary Gallagher has a plummy choirboy Cuthbert who fancies being a priest and crossing his fingers when it comes to the celibacy. Mary Mooney has singing lessons with creepy Mr Emanuelli. The girls aren’t just inexperienced, they’re a blank slate, and even instructive lessons on the reproductiv...e systems of the rabbit have to be interrupted for prayers. Any questions they have are interpreted as insolence. Tampax boxes are confiscated like cigarettes. When the girls turn to other areas for information, they find there’s little help to be found crammed three abreast in a toilet cubicle reading questionable passages of Leviticus. And when they’re caught, naturally the first question is ‘Is it a Catholic Bible?’
Once a Catholic was first performed at The Royal Court Theatre in 1977. It won awards from the Evening Standard newspaper and Plays & Players magazine. Mary O'Malley went on to be the Royal Court's resident dramatist for 1977. The production transferred to Wyndham's Theatre in the West End where it ran for over two years.

Is this you?? We're looking for an actor, playing age 40ish, for the key role of Kat, the wise, battle hardened infantryman who acts as guardian, and inspiration, for the young German soldiers. It's a great part - it's a great script - and of course we are performing this truly iconic work at THE most significant time. This is an excellent opportunity to be involved in what we are confident will be a memorable, exciting and moving production. Rehearsals take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (and some Sundays) from 24th September 2018. Share share share if you have friends who may be interested. Contact Mike Higginson (07789 278984 and mjhigginson@tiscali.co.uk) for further details. http://www.thegwt.org.uk/PhotoPage.php?Pl ayNum=655

by Peter Shaffer 30th June to 7th July 2018
The phrase “modern classic” is sometimes overused, but in this case it is surely most appropriate. Peter Shaffer’s haunting, disturbing, visually unforgettable play “Equus” is known as one of the finest plays of the 20th Century.
... Based on a story he was told in the car by a friend of an incident in some stables near to where they were driving, Shaffer attempts to enter the mind of a 17 year old boy who has been sent to a psychiatrist after being convicted of blinding 6 horses with a hoof pick. The psychiatrist has to overcome the boy’s anger and resentment, and whilst trying to get to the truth begins to question the validity of his reasons and his own life

Who needs to go to the West End when you have such quality talent just around the corner !

What a FABULOUS performance by the Youth Group of Geoffrey Whitworth Theatre of Midsummer Nights Dream. I've never laughed so much at Shakespeare ! And in a good way . Enjoyed it thoroughly. Shout out to Annie for her first foray onto the boards, well done to her and Well done all.

User

We have attended nearly every production for many years now and have never been disappointed. I have run out of fingers and toes on the number of times I have said that that was the best yet - though I think Avenue Q will be very difficult to beat!

User

Watched the opening night of the Pitman Painters and was blown away by the slick performances and stage direction.

This was a very easy play to watch with excellent comedic moments, pacey dialogue and believable performances from all concerned.

I for one will have an obvious bias but on this occasion I do not need to say Dominic Clarke's was exceptional because he is my son. His performance was exceptional and by far his greatest triumph at the GWT, irrespective of parentage.

Well done Sue Higginson, the cast and of course to my offspring.

User

Thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to this theatre yesterday evening to see Brassed Off. Fabulous production!

On 11 March we went to the GWT to see a performance of Jerusalem. It was BRILLIANT!!! I have seen many plays there and the standard of the performances are so high that many of them wouldn't look out of place in the West End. If you ever get the opportunity to go there, do. It is a fantastic little theatre and I love it.

User

It's a great little theatre, with a fantastic cast and backstage workers.Always come away wanting more.

Consistently high production and performance standards which has, without doubt, been a critical part of my grounding in theatre!

User

Best kept secret, highest standard achievable in performance and professionalism , local and reasonable.
