We went for my husbands birthday. Lovely meal and friendly staff. Yes the full menu wasn't available but they are closing next week for a full refurbishment so we were fully understanding. We did get our main meal what we originally wanted anyway it was just the starter we had to change. We will most certainly be going back once it has re-opened and I just hope the service and food will be just as good as it was today.

Third visit to this pub restaurant and have had good meals every time, the staff are really pleasant and provide excellent service. Good choice of food, nice surroundings. We will return

User

The atmosphere was fantastic and captured the marvellous history of the area while it also included all the modern comforts, with great service which was very friendly, and a wonderful variety of meals and drinks.

User

Had a nice relaxing evening with good food, drinks and service, such a relief after having eaten at Salvo's the night before. It was a good well priced menu and the food didn't disappoint. Good to meet the personable hard working Alex.

My only complaint was that when I called to book I used the second option and tried to book through the automated system. This didn't allow ne to book us in for 8pm, I had to get an 8.30 slot. On arrival the place was pretty much empty. The automated booking system should be avoided, apparently there is a 3rd option which allows you to speak to a human being that knows what's happening! Otherwise, highly recommended!

User

Had a great evening on new years eve, food was lovely, drinks also and a live band. We really enjoyed it. The service was good, staff really helpful and friendly overall a brilliant night, would do it all again!

User

Five times , five times fantastic, nothing is to much for the staff, the food is fantastic ,great service, second to none, staff are very attentive to all your needs and is a pleasure in a restaurant .warm and friendly atmosphere, don't expect the old George and dragon and a wacky warehouse, this is an up market menu at a fantastic price ,special three course menu in the week ,will not hesitate to keep calling in to eat ,Thank you for a great New Year's Eve and look forward to the next one

User

User

User

We went here yesterday for my little girls birthday, the meal & service was great.

Then my daughter wanted to go into the wacky warehouse which was closed, we asked the landlady (I think) & she kindly opened it up for my daughter as it was her birthday..

I cannot thank her enough for everything she did for us, it really made my daughters birthday that little more special..

User

Was busy. We hadn't booked but got a table after 20 or so minutes. Service great and food , I had roast beef, was lovely. Best roasties I've had in a gastro pub.

Lovely and warm. Good atmosphere.

Will go again.

User

So this is visit number 8/9 to this place over at least 3 different changes of ownership, my wife loves it, I have been disappointed every time. Today no different.

It was busy, just after New Years but not heaving. There were a few

Tables spare, but thankfully we were seated straight away, myself my wife and a couple of kiddies. There were I think 2 staff serving maybe 50/60, plus a separate barman.

Ok so break it down,

1) setting - great, lovely modern traditional, money clearly been spent, solid oak tables oak panelling. Great. Classy but slightly country, fits location spot on:) plates presentation very nice.

2) service - crap. Although seated immediately and friendly waiter, food took a good 30mins to arrive, not great with two kiddies moaning on. Seemed pretty understaffed, also when I came to pay I got que jumped twice and the barman had to keep asking who was next (approx 5 people stood at the bar) not great.

3. Food- I had the waygu burger with cheese and bacon. Pretty good actually, apart from portion size. My son had the kids sausage and chips, and had the same number of chips as me. No salad either other than a little in the bun my wife had 5 pieces of scampi and lad number two the same. She tells me the portions are much bigger through the week. Condiments (mayo and tommy sauce) tasted a bit like a kebab shop mayo, although it was served in a nice bowl.

4. Price. Again not great really. My burger was a whopping £15.50 with its bacon and cheese addition. Yes it was a wagu, but no, we are not in central London. And it certainly was not a whopping portion size. We were all still hungry following eating.

For my wife's scampi it was £10 (?£2 per scampi). A fairer price would have been about £10 for the burger with everything and £6-7 for the scampi.

We would have had some dessert, but service was taking forever just to clear our plates.

So summery - quite tasty food, well presented, but not much of it. Friendly but seriously overworked staff. Lovely place, but a bit overpriced. Probably won't venture back until it gets taken over again and my wife raves about it again! Hope this helps anyone trying to decide wether to go. :)

User

Slightly disappointed today with our food! A couple of wks before xmas our food was amazing & we had a huge portion! Service was fantasticing! I understand it's a busy time but this should make the place even better. Today the same meal I got then at the same price was like a childs portion! Not sure how you can do this really? Same meal same price & change the size of the portion massively! The service was quite poor today aswell & slow. Quite disappointing. I took my husband in high hopes as he use to hate the place & his words were 'it aint changed one bit!' The new decor I absolutely love. I will visit again but maybe when it's quieter!

User

My family and I have eaten here on many occasions, and have always found the food "OK". Nothing to write home about. It is what it is ... Two for one, but the meals are usually around the £10 - £15 mark. We went today (Sunday) to celebrate a birthday. The meal was nice, and the staff were friendly. My only negative was the lack of staff on such a busy day. The poor girl behind the bar was doing her best to keep up to the empty glasses while having to serve at the bar and clear tables. Definitely under staffed. The waiting time to be served was long, especially when we had to queue to pay on departure. But all in all, we have a nice time and the kids love the curry !!

User

Went for tea last night with two friends. They enjoyed there chicken dishes. I however ordered steak, it was awful. So chewy. Thankfully they refunded it - service was ok. Wont be going again sorry

User

Had a fab Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago, decided to pop in for lunch, hubby ordered steak pie, looked impressive with pastry top, that is the best I can say. About an inch of filling. Just five pieces of steak and three of them were fatty. It went back, and replacement was the same! Went back again and hubby ordered the chicken pie, again impressive but nothing to merit the £11 charge. I had eaten my vege burger by time second pie arrived, so not a joyous lunch. The waiter certainly didn't have a poker face, lucky my hubby missed it. Very very poor. Won't be coming back. Will stick to Tobys further along the canal, food and service excellent and at a fraction of the price!

User

Bring back the old. Totally over-priced. £18 for 2 sarnies and 2 drinks!! No more home cooked chips - now stingy greasy American Fries. Took 25 mins for food and sarnie contents were cold. No bench seats for dog people anymore - now in old kids area. Won't be back. Such a shame :(

User

The service was terrible. We complained about chewy steaks 3 rump and 1 sirloin, twenty mins after the complaint a young waitress told us that because we didn't complain early enough she wouldn't refund, and the chef advised her that rump is chewy (and impossible to cut) sometimes!!! I asked what about the sirloin to be told that happens too!!! We were given a free ice cream between the table!
