Motivation Monday: Chris Murphy, 57, a family man that started his skydiving/parachuting adventures in 1977 with the British Army. Starting in The Royal Parachute Display Team, quickly moving on to become a qualified approved instructor and display jump master. Doing display parachuting all over the country, into the USA, France and Cyprus, gaining tons of experience.
In the summer of 1993, devastatingly Chris was involved in a freak skydiving accident, which incredibly he su...rvived but left him with very serious injuries leading him to be in and out of hospital for two years. Chris underwent multiple operations to save his right foot and leg. Along with the hospital visits rehab was required to help get over the mental trauma of the rare accident.
Frustration and depression of not being able to take part in the extreme sport forced him to turn his back on something not only did he do as a job but also was a passionate hobby. As time passed by he just missed the sports more and more.
Murphy kept in touch with some of his former Skydiving buddies, one of which, Reg Green, ran a successful Skydiving School - GForce Skydiving. Reg invited Chris on one of the Accelerated Free Fall trips where he could help out the students with ground training, on radio under canopy and pass on any knowledge he had in the sport to newcomers. Helping out on these trips has meant it keeps Chris in touch with the sport, even though he can’t parachute himself anymore these trips have re-ignited his love for skydiving.
GForce Skydiving gets bigger and better every season with the free fall family ever growing. AFF training and progression training in the UK and regular trips abroad brings knowledge, fun and new people together from all walks in life with one thing in common…a life of adventure!
“Skydiving meant the world to me and when I couldn’t take part any more I was in a dark place although with the support of my family I got through life I always missed the buzz of the drop zone, Reg asking me to help on his trips has meant the world to me, and I will always be grateful, I felt useful again and being part of an organisation like G-Force even for a short time brightened my life. My advice to people who are in a similar position, is that even if you can’t do what you used to do at the same level get involved at a level that you can manage. Just being around people with the same interests and experience is good for your mental health”

The packing parachutes lesson always seems to be the lesson where you have everyone’s full attention. I wander why. 🤔
