Give Peas A Chance - Bridge Over M25

About Give Peas A Chance - Bridge Over M25

London based Graffiti artist who goes by the name of PEAS. He added his name on the bridge, and later some other clever clogs added the full phrase!

Give Peas A Chance - Bridge Over M25 Description

Constructed between 1902 and 1906, the Chalfont viaduct is of a standard design commonly seen on Great Western rail lines and is constructed of blue /black engineering brick with decorative brickwork including projecting brick imposts on the piers and parapet wall and bullnose brickwork defining the semi-elliptical archways. The brickwork has several areas of mortar repair and occasional loose or missing bricks but is generally of good condition. The viaduct remains largely as constructed, despite the addition of the M25 motorway beneath its central arches in the mid 1980s. These works included the raising of the ground level for the carriageway and the re-routing of the River Misbourne through concrete culverts beneath ground level. A low brick retaining wall was added to the westernmost pier to provide stability for a farm track. Further concrete supports are used above the track to support the embankment. Current works to expand the M25 at this point will include the replacement of the crash barriers and removal of the hard shoulder, thus allowing the motorway to have four lanes in each direction running beneath the viaduct. New crash barriers fixed to the base of the piers adjacent to the motorway will be narrower and provide the viaduct with protection. The viaduct is one of many surviving viaducts of similar construction from this date, however it is unique in being the only brick built bridge on this stretch of the M25 and is a local landmark for road users. This report serves as a record of the viaduct condition, appearance and function prior to these works.

So Marc has a 3 year old son.... they are advising in his weekly parenting update what to do when your child says “Yuck, Peas”
I am not sure why the original advice on the blog has been crossed out and someone has written “Give Helch A Break” there instead.
How is he ever going to get his son to eat Peas now?

Fun Fact: Oxford Archaeology carried out a historic building report on the me in 2009 and studied my legendary graffiti as part of the noble viaduct’s architectural interest.

So I just had a crazy thought.... In 2013 the UK sold the dartford crossing to the French!!! So if bridges and tunnels can be sold - I wonder how much it would cost to buy me? We can set up a GoFundMe account and raise enough money so the PEAS Bridge can be owned by the people - for the people.
Now obviously I am typing tongue in cheek (because you don't need your tongue when typing) - but it does make you wonder....

What is most amazing about this bridge is that the architect some 100 years ago built the arches the exact size for the 3 lane motorway to pass underneath. Great forethought by him/her.

When passing I always feel hungry at the thought of fresh peas sitting on the plate alongside my Sunday Roast

Well what can I say... We've been through a lot over the years and I get to see you more than most of the family. You've always been there for me when things have been tough and for that, I am always here for you. It seems like yesterday when we first met and from the moment I first saw you, it was true love at first sight. Everytime I see you I know I'm almost home. So what I'm saying ladies and gentleman..... GIVE PEAS A CHANCE ! :-)

User

This is an awesome bridge and it's been in my life since I was very little, it reminds me of going on family holidays as a child and now when I pass under it I know I'm nearly at my sisters house in Beaconsfield and there's always a cold Stella Waiting there for me

User

This is a truly excellent bridge, a welcoming beacon of hope for those suffering the misery of being stuck on the M25. A little-known pop trivia fact is that this bridge was the favourite bridge of the late star John Lennon and his partner Yoko Ono.

User

Never the bridge too far.

The landmark of greatness. Only those on holiday to the UK would believe it to be graffiti.

It's more than that, it's a nation's voice

User

Nearly home 👍🏻

User

My landmark on the cruel mistress I call the M25, I sail on her often and this place saves me from dispair as it's a sign that I'll be home soon.

Minty minty minty the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the most important of the day, the first week of July, so I can get a chance. if 7th, but it would be great to be a bit of a few days, but it is feasible. I have yet to be able, but I think it

User

I'm a member of a special 'Peas Club' all members checking in on every pass. It's such an iconic landmark and well worth a visit.its disappointing that the message is only visible from one side. Maybe somebody could put that right ? We just love the Peas.

User

I travel the M25 and see lots of different bridges going over the road. But this one melts my heart, the way the bricks are laid one on top of each other the pattern is exquisite, the curves are divine, the dirty road colour leaves you wonder what been going on Then to top it of the majestic brush strokes of the unknow painter.. when they where writing their message to the world.

User

I really enjoyed this bridge, and I wouldn't necessarily class myself as a bridge person. I enjoyed how it spanned an otherwise impassable motorway and allowed people to cross it when they might not have been able to due to the volume of traffic on the road. The cheeky slogan was an unexpected bonus- unorthodox maybe, but such fun, and cryptic too. Myself and my driving partner pondered it's meaning for many minutes. On a personal level, it also signifies our nearing to Watford, and therefore home, hooray! One day I hope to cross this bridge, not merely drive underneath. Fingers crossed! Super bridge, would recommend to a friend.

User

I often wonder what it would be like to be on top of you and watch the M25 with a Birds Eye view.

One of the best bridges. I get all mushy thinking about you. Absolute masterpeas.

User

I have no idea how it was known when those first bricks were laid at your birth how they knew that years later that your arches would need to stretch wide enough to accommodate the M25! How did your creator know to make your reach so wide and so precise? It's been a tight squeeze for you since they widened that beastly road that gnaws at your feet to four lanes, but I still marvel at your arches as I crawl under you at about 5mph :-)

User

I can only assume it is world heritage UNESCO site now along with the Great Barrier Reef, North American Rockies for me an area of outstanding natural beauty unrivalled. I suggest Air BnB offer two weeks holidays. I know where I am going next year with the kids!

User

I always marvel at this bridge and the patterns of the bricks so much detail and so much time to take it in when you've been stuck under it for fourty fucking minuets.

User

Great

User

Fantastic day out! 400m trip for us, well worth it and will definitely be back.

User

Facebook has asked me to review this bridge!! Can honestly say this bridge has touched so many hearts. The way the arches gently curve and the way the bricks are put together - magical!

It has also brought a totally taboo subject to the forefront of traffic jam conversation! Whether or not to "Give Peas A Chance". I'm not going to lie, I didn't care for peas but now they are always in my heart. Call it a mushy sentiment if you will, it just doesn't get any better than this!!! Peas out!!

User

A nice bridge, very nice. There is a "PIES" bridge on the M57 up north. Maybe you could bridge the gap in some way.
