Golden Rule

Our favourite pub in the Lake District! So snug and cosy. We were in every night last week while on holiday. A great range of Robinson's beers all expertly kept and served with a smile by the friendly staff. A nice fire on the go every night. One of the great pubs! Can't wait to visit again!

After a long walk I can't think of a better place to sit than in a lovely warm friendly place like this and have a beer.

Good ale and a warm welcome from landlord & staff. No music just conversation! Dog friendly if well behaved. Scotch egg or pie if you get there early.

Best pub in Ambleside and for miles around. Same landlord for the forty years I've known the place. Excellent selection of beers in cosy and clean surroundings. Not for foodies, this is a proper PUB!

Great traditional pub apart from the landlord. A big group of us traveled to the Lakes just after the floods of 2015. We did a small walk and finished in Golden Rule absolutely soaking. When we arrived we were the only people in the pub due to the tourist industry being extremely quiet that weekend. We huddled around the fire, in their seating arrangement, trying to warm up and dry off. About four locals then turned up and the landlord promptly appeared to declare that the "fire was for everybody" and we shouldn't be blocking it. Well, we only sat in the seating arrangement that was provided, showing some solidarity to a flood hit lake district, spending our money in this bar and supporting the local economy. We don't want to be treated like kings but a little respect would have been nice. The insinuation that we were being selfish was insulting. Don't go here if you don't want to be treated with the contempt that locals show to tourists.

I have ALWAYS made a point of having at least one drink here. Even if visting for a short time. Good drink a conversation if you wish or a quite read if not (beer etc. & hot beverages). Evenings often lively & late afteernoons when walkers return from the fells. Dogs welcome, often with their owners in tow. Outdoor paved area to sit out, rain or shine. You can even stay over night too.

Fantastic traditional pub! Definitely worth stopping in if you're in Ambleside. In fact you probably won't go anywhere else. Would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the barman who came over and rudely told my friend to move from his seat as he was "blocking the fire which is for everyone". Very strange thing to come over and say to us seeing as we were only sitting at a table they had placed there in the first place. Never the less, guy was probably having a bad day, the pub is great, just don't block the fire because the fire blocking police will be called.

This pub is fabulous. Wonderful old fashioned atmosphere. Greg the barman brilliant. Thanks for making us so welcome. Mo and Steve from Swindon. See you again soon that's for sure!!!
