A new English Heritage survey has revealed that children's earliest memories of castles are more likely to have come from fantasy, film and fiction, instead of a real-life visit. Time to reverse the trend! http://bit.ly/2KT7IYT

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! (and it's not a bat either....) This week, drone pilots have visited Goodrich to film 'a postcard from...' We'll share their video as soon as we get it, but in the meantime here is a birds eye view of out neighbors at Witley Court & Gardens from the English Heritage YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFOm8gowO jo

On this day (June 7th) in 1942, RAF Halifax V9977 crashed 1mile south of Goodrich Castle killing all 11 on board - the plane was flying a test mission developing radar technology. The crew and scientists are commemorated in a memorial window in the castle chapel.

We have bats living at the castle, but this little chap was found hanging around inside one of our parasol umbrellas. We think it is a pipistrelle.

This place is wonderful, full of character & atmosphere, worth the walk & all the stairs up & down & delightful cafe at the end for a delicious cuppa

User

Smashing place, bit worried our visit was going to be controlled by the weather but it all held. Watched the demonstrations and loved the views. Make sure you get the audio commentary. Finally stopped at the caf├® for a light snack lunch after a couple of hours

User

I am into history and love every aspect of it. Goodrich Castle was a wonderful experience as we were able to walk through and visualise going back in time imagining what life may have been like back then. Goodrich is located in the beautiful quaint area of Ross on Wye which added to the castles beauty. I would definately go back again

User

Great day out with the grandkids, staff very friendly and helpful. Sadly we missed the activities but still do much to look at, search for. The children were especially interested in the prison!! Thank you for a lovely day

User

Fantastic ruin yet still with lots of character. The history of the castle is well explained and access to the top of the keep tower is brilliant with wonderful views of the Wye valley. Good cafe and shop to boot. Well worth a visit.

User

Fabulous day out. Lovely, well preserved castle in well kept grounds. Friendly, informative staff and a cafe too. Dogs allowed, lots of places to have a picnic. Highly recommend. One tiny drawback, you need to pay for car parking (┬Ż1) even if you are an English Heritage member. No change? Don't fret, they can take payment via card in the shop.

User

Excellent historic site with loads of interesting history. Great staff and cafe too! Well worth a visit.

User

Enjoyed walking around this great castle, the audio tour was very good and was a bonus being free.

Friendly helpful staff.

Cafe was a bit overpriced, ┬Ż2.20 for a cup of Tea.

Well worth a visit.

User

Enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at Goodrich Castle which was enhanced by the complimentary audio guide. This made the whole castle come alive, with detailed information about its history and the families who had lived there.

Then a lovely cup of coffee and carrot cake to finish the afternoon served by very friendly and helpful staff. English Heritage have got this totally spot on. I hope the audio guides become available at more of their sites.

Came back for a second visit today with my two youngest sons and husband. Fantastic castle, absolutely excellent staff, so friendly and knowledgeable, shop has some truly beautiful things to buy, splashed out on a stunning sword today and had a lovely chat with the guy in the shop about swords and axes!

Highly recommend Goodrich castle, as far as castles go its pretty accessible even for my 2 autistic sons who have a lot of trouble falling over everything!

All in all a fantastic place to visit made so much better by such friendly and helpful staff.

User

User

A beautiful Ruin, a historical dream, loved visiting and will be back - especially loved the audio guide and gift shop. But I think I left my sons blue coat there on Sunday in the restaurant can you please let me know as I have phoned and messaged and had no response. Thanks :)

User

We really enjoyed our time around the Castle only thing it was not wheelchair friendly and there was a Lady in her wheelchair waiting for her friend to go around but she couldn't even go to it, for the sake of making some ramps

User

Nice tea out at the Goodrich castle cafe yesterday

afternoon The staff could perhaps be a bit more cheerful and smile (might have been the hot weather) but apart from that, quality foods, quick service, clean loos, everything very good
