U16 Nationals Round Up - Day 1 by Joanne Barrett
Played four, won two, lost two - that’s it in a nutshell.
But what the results don’t show you is how well this U16 team have taken to the court here at Day 1 of the U16 National Clubs finals in Essex.
... Make no bones about it, this competition is a tough one but the team have taken it on and came out of the blocks running.
We had a late morning start against Telstars - a good game where neither side gave much away.
It was even-stevens after quarter one at five all but Grangetown got their noses in front and held on to a slim lead the rest of the way through.
All of the defence combinations kept a tight hold on things, the shooters kept their eye in at the other end and the centre court engine kept running. It ended close but in our favour 22 to 19. A first match win on the first day, one under our belts.
Eagles were next and were always going to be tough.
End quarter one was three goals to six in their favour but that rapidly climbed to five to 15 by end quarter two.
We found our fighting spirit in the last two quarters but Eagles were the better team. Q3 ended nine to 24 but a great last quarter from Grangetown’s defence closed them right down, they scored five and so did we - end score 14 to 29. Time to catch our breath? Not much! We placed second in our group, the afternoon rounds were drawn and our opponents were Kingston and Oldham.
Kingston were an unknown for us but this team were ready to take them on. The coaches tried a few different combinations on court with players slotting in effortlessly - the defence unit especially.
Definitely a team performance and our ever reliable squad of shooters and speedy centres kept the game flowing. We got in front and stayed there, end score 26 to 15.
Now for Oldham. Always the ones to watch, the North West team quite simply delivered a masterclass and we were on the other end of it. That’s not to say the Grangetown girls didn’t give it a go - they most certainly did. They showed some good work through the court and ran for everything, our heads did not go down and our work rate stayed up. The outstanding Oldham defence led the game though and their shooters just did not miss.
It ended Oldham 47, Grangetown 8. Lots to take in to tomorrow where it looks like we will be the middle grouping.
Above all, a great team performance today delivered with a spirit and strength in every combination of players taking to the court. Well done girls and coaches. 🖤🧡
