Gray'S Stone Carving Studio Description

Gray's Stone Carving Studio was set up to continue providing excellent quality design and manufactured stone work of all kinds. Also with the aim of passing these traditional skills on. The owner, Henry Gray has been carving stone since 1995. Trained as a Stonemason his view on Sculpture and carving is firmly rooted in the craft. He was involved with the restoration of the West front of Salisbury Cathedral and has worked for commercial masonry and conservation companies.
In recent years he has been concentrating on making Sculpture. Current output is diverse in theme and style. Which includes full size figurative ecclesiastic figures to small “Golems” and more abstract pieces based on Japanese Culture.
His main influences are Patience Gray, Norman Mommens, Corinna Sargood and Medieval Figurative Sculpture
In 2012 he will be concentrating on developing his portfolio and the workshops further; exploring contemplation and divinity as themes and making pieces which reflect this.

A fresh term begins. Many of our lovely participants are returning students with ongoing or new projects. If silence is golden then the meditative tap tap tap of hand held carving tools is even better. What finer feeling than sinking into a passion project?

Yesterday under sunnny skies, we went to beautiful Bowerchake to revisit the Deer memorial made for Toby Mann
When left out in the elements, stone is touched by nature. Moss, lichen, bugs and more making their homes on the surface and crevices of the sculpture.
... This organic patina is one of the loveliest qualities of stone, its ability to evolve with its environment and become ever more sympathetic with its surroundings. The natural camouflage grown on the surface can diminish the apprentice of the carved lettering however, and as the Deer has now settled into the landscape, Henry was asked to return to paint in the dedication, making the important message of the piece distinct once again
We posted about the process of making and developing this piece recently. Have a look at the highlights for the story it’s the creation

Sand Motif 3 - ‘Kindness’ & ‘Om Ma Ne Padme Hum’
Henry subsequently elaborated on the contemplative series, carving 3 panels, included in exhibitions at Project Workshops, Salisbury Plain Arts Trail and Glastonbury Abbey Arts Trail.
One reads ‘Kindness’ in Roman lettering, incised into the waves fading in and out. The second includes sandscrit lettering ‘Om Ma Ne Padme Hum’ and the third, the sand motif without embellishment

Sand Motif 1 - ‘Take Time’
Henry first developed the ‘Sand Motif’ while working on commission for a dementia clinic, the first inscription simply read 'take time'.
For research Henry and Tamsin went to Hayling Island to get some good photos and a plaster-of-paris mould of the sand once the tide had receded.
... A couple of years later, walking up Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons they came across the same pattern fossilised, within a stones throw of the trig point at the top. Nature making its own impression of the tide immortalised in stone

Student Spotlight: Angus Mann is engrossed in the moment, carving a beautiful piece of Portland stone. His piece depicts two trees framing what will become an inscription celebrating a wood, planted for the millennium! 🌳
Its a sure sign that we are deep in concentration when we end up with stone dust all over our faces! #studentspolight #portlandstone #woodland #wiltshire #salisbury @ Gray's Stone Carving Studio

This Holy Week, we focus on “The Presence of Christ" a piece which we made by for an exhibition at Sarum College, Salisbury, celebrating 400 years since the first printing of the King James’ Bible . The concept for the work was the celebration of the first time that people could read the bible themselves, unmediated by a priest. . A view of a direct relationship with Christ informed by The King James Bible over the last 400 years, colouring and illuminating the World.... . This carving is in a style that was prevalent when the Bible itself was first printed but shows the changing landscape over the last 4 centuries. It is painted and gilded using as bright colours as possible, as was most stone carving of the day. . These days it is unfashionable to paint stone. Tastes and attitudes change, so the continuity provided by the the written word is essential. It can help carry the message, that resides in our hearts, that it is possible to move beyond the words, towards a direct relationship with the spirituality that people held
