*PATIENTS WITH CANCER*
There was an interesting article in the Daily Mail "GOOD HEALTH" section yesterday.
Some therapists/spas etc will not offer massage to cancer patients citing insurance or saying that cancer will be spread around the body by massage.
... There is no evidence for this. It's described as "junk science" by Professor Kefah Mokbel who is the director of surgery at the London Breast Institute.
Our message over the years at NIM (where we were Tutors) via our guest lecturers like Maeve McSweeny, a cancer nurse/therapist from Cork, and also Dr Peter Mackereth, the Director of Complementary Therapies at the world renown Christie Hospital in Manchester, both strongly supported Professor Mokbel's statement.
Some years ago I also contacted Gayle MacDonald when she visited the UK from USA. She is the author of a world accredited book about cancer patients, MEDICINE HANDS - MASSAGE THERAPY FOR PEOPLE WITH CANCER. Gayle lists the benefits of massage for cancer patients and any cautions that need to be observed in treatments. Published by Findhorn Press e-mail info@findhornpress.com and well worth the read.
Massage therapists have so much to offer cancer patients so do not be put off by "junk science" Eddie Caldwell

Our Therapists attended their professional association's AGM yesterday as part of their Continuing Professional Development.
The National Association of Massage and Manipulative Therapists (NAMMT) held the meeting in Rochdale and was well supported from therapists from all over the UK. A good day with a varied timetable. www.nammt.co.uk

This is a brilliant picture to demonstrate how even the smallest thing like a wallet or a phone can impact your spine’s position. Goes without saying that carrying heavy bags on one shoulder could also lead to similar effects on the spine.

THE THERAPISTS AT THE CLINIC.
The principal therapist is Shaun Pennington who lives in Holcombe Brook. Shaun has 18 years clinical experience as well as being a tutor at the Northern Institute of Massage for much of that time instructing trainee massage therapists.
He is the holder of the Advanced Diploma In Massage Therapy and the Diploma in Sports Therapy (Society of Sports Therapists qualification). His main areas of specialism are Sports Injuries, Fascial Conditions, Back... and Hip Injuries and Rehabilitation for chronic conditions, e.g. Arthritis.
The other therapist who works at the clinic on a part-time basis is Eddie Caldwell who started his career in Greenmount some 35 years ago. Eddie has similar qualifications (see above) plus the Diploma in Manipulative Therapy. He, too, was a tutor (and one-time Principal) of the Northern Institute of Massage and has wide-ranging experience of many musculo-skeletal conditions and their treatments.

Well done to Marie Caldwell aged 81 - she did the Bury 10k and then straight afterwards, she completed the Family Fun Run with three of her grandchildren! Regular massage after two new hips has obviously worked then!
Funds raised are for Grace's Place Hospice in Bury.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU COME FOR A TREATMENT AT GREENMOUNT CLINIC?
* The therapist will sit you down and talk AND listen to you while you explain what injury/problem/condition you may have come with.
* He will ask how the problem happened; about any pain; does it interfere with your sleep; what does it stop you doing - he builds up a picture about you and your injury.
... * He will ask about your medical history e.g. have you had any serious illness or been involved in an accident.
*Have you any current medical problems; are you seeing your GP or have hospital appointments.
* Is there anything you would like to ask the therapist?
This is the first part of the Examination Procedure and it will be followed by a visual examination, probable some palpation (exploring the injured area by touch). Then he will move on to examination by movement of the injured area compared to any corresponding uninjured area, e.g. an injured knee versus the other (uninjured) knee.
Possessing all this information, he will then discuss what he has found and the best ways to treat it. He may possibly find something that indicates a more complicated problem and he will refer you to your GP.

Our duty is to take care of every patient in their best interest and to the best of our ability.
