What is a Muay Thai Kru? In Thai, the literal meaning of Kru is teacher or instructor. A Muay Thai Kru is a Master of Muay Thai who teaches new generations authentic Muay Thai traditions and techniques.
How to earn the Kru title.
There are different ways a student of Muay Thai can earn the “kru” status.
One of the ways (under the WTBA) is to train under a Kru or Ajarn for 5-10 years and properly demonstrate and successfully pass standardized WTBA curriculum to earn the title of Kru (common in Western World). Not only do you have to demonstrate the standardised curriculum, you have to show that you can teach it at the yearly instructor development camps. A fighter gains notoriety by winning Muay Thai fights and trains to make a living as a Thai Boxer. Most often, these fighters do not go by titles like we do in the West (common in Thailand).
