Guide Dogs National Breeding Centre

About Guide Dogs National Breeding Centre

Guide Dogs National Breeding Centre supplies all of the guide dog pups for the UK. It breeds up to 1500 puppies each year.

Guide Dogs National Breeding Centre Description

The National Breeding Centre (NBC) breeds up to 1500 puppies each year at our state of the art facility, with fantastic facilities for staff, volunteers and our dogs, enabling us to carry out research and produce quality puppies to change the lives of blind and partially sighted people.

Our breed stock dogs live in the homes of our volunteers, and visit the centre for breeding, boarding, and occasionally to have their puppies. All of the puppies we breed visit us at 6 weeks old before going to live in the home of a volunteer puppy walker for a year. Visitors can see and learn about this working site as we carry out our daily work.

Information on our free scheduled tours, puppy helper experience (full for 2015 i'm afraid! ) and meeting room hire can be found on our website or email nbcvisitors@guidedogs.org. uk.

For information on becoming a breed stock holder please see the website or contact bshenqiries@guidedogs.org. uk

For other volunteering enquiries at the NBC please contact john. garrett@guidedogs.org. uk

We were given our puppy helper experience day as a Christmas present by family. We have supported guide dogs in by sponsoring the dogs. We were looking forward to our visit to see how the breeding centre worked.

We were greeted by Nicola and Margaret who were to be our guides for the day. Their knowledge and interest made our visit even more enjoyable. They were both volunteers and were very passionate about the centre.

Apart from the tour we were able to see the pups who were just seven weeks old and due to go out to their puppy walkers the next day.

We also experienced the loss of sight by being blindfolded and led through an obstacle course and through a sensory tunnel.

We also met John who had lost his sight and his Kahn sorry if my spelling is wrong on his name. John gave us a his story which was a very touching and moving account of how his life had been inhanced by having had his guide dogs.

The whole day was a fantastic and memorable experience that will stay with us.

Thank you to all the staff but especially the volunteers who without all their help and support this service would not run as well.

Yours Sincerley. Gill & Neil from Bristol.

We loved our day out today! Wonderful work but inspirational people

User

We had a brilliant day in the sunshine. All the Guide dogs were awesome and in particular I loved Spencer the most ! The babies were absolutely gorgeous. The staff were so helpful and friendly. Cakes and food was great. We sponsored a puppy . All the people with their dogs were so friendly. All in all 10/10. A really enjoyable day out. X

User

We did the puppy helper tour. Puppies galore. Very hands on tour led by knowledgeable staff. We got to play with puppies and fed them. Not rushed at all. Only done in small groups which is great. Very interesting to find out all about the breeding program. The tour finishes with a chat with a guide dog owner who was happy to answer all our questions. Thank you.

User

We did the experience day with the puppies. It was great to get to play, feed and handle the puppies but most of all it was great to see what amazing work all the staff do and how important their work is. The fact that they don't get any government funding is just insane. A special hi to little Jason (black Labrador puppy - 6 weeks old) He's so special ❤️ X X X And keep up the good work to Mark and Upton- teaching up and down the country about what great work they do at the centre

Visited the national guide dog breeding centre yesterday (12.08.15). It was an eye opener to see how much time, money and effort that goes into the organisation by everyone that is involved. Also being able to see the breeding centre go through it daily activity was truly amazing! The afternoon was rounded off with tea/coffee and cake along with a few purchases from the centre's gift shop ☺️ Thank you for a great afternoon. Next on the list is to go to guide dog training centre in the near future

User

Took my nieces here as a Christmas present. It was a long wait for them (til August as it's so booked up) but totally worth it. Such a wonderful morning. The puppies are just adorable and it is clear to see the passion of everyone involved. The welfare of all the dogs is the top priority, and clear to see. I now have hundreds of photos and memories of a day that we will never forget.

User

Took a coach yesterday really brilliant informative day first class staff and absolutely gorgeous puppy’s

User

This experience was absolutely amazing - everyone was so kind and welcoming, even though we ran a little late with the traffic out of London! I can't really put into words how much fun it was to play and feed the puppies! Guide Dogs are also so impressive too!

User

My daughter works here and kindly arranged a visit for us. A fantastic place, staff lovely. Really enjoyed cuddling puppies and also visiting and fussing the older dogs. A lovely experience!

User

Me and my wife Katie have just spent one of the most unforgettable time of our lives here last week. Everybody who visits will have their own favourite part of the day (there is plenty to choose from - playing and socialising with the puppies, feeding the puppies, listening to the work the organisation does, the sensory tunnel and a frank and candid Q & A session with a GD owner), but for me it was the blindfold walk with Upton, GD, who effortlessly and expertly guided me through an "urban assault course". The blindfold was no ordinary blindfold but allowed to keep your eyes open whilst being in total darkness. When I got to the end and took my blindfold off, I was truly choked up and very emotional. A fantastic day out, at a fantastic facility, ran by fantastic people. Everyone should visit and help swell the coffers of this self funded superb life changing organisation. Thankyou !!!

User

Lovely place. Lovely people. Lovely dogs and puppies.

User

Lovely center ; all the staff were so friendly and passionate; we got to experience what it is like not being able to see by walking through specially build backout tunnel which and only rely on the touch and sound. We had lots and lots of cuddles with this amazing dogs; ❤️

User

It’s great to see the advances made since we did the stud dog /brood bitch stuff. Remembering the old buildings etc. Nice to see some old (er) faces.

User

I would personally like to thank you on behalf of the air ambulance for donating 2 vouchers for our raffle at our live music extravaganza on Friday 7th October at the railway club in rugby. This contributed to helping to raise a grand total of £1878.60 for the air ambulance. Many thanks . We will be holding another one next year on Friday 6th October and hope you might do the same again as I am taking over this event from pete storer

User

Fantastic facility, beautiful dogs excellent volunteer guides. Highly recommended

User

Can’t believe we’ve not visited before as we are only down the road in Barford ! Absolutely loved it .. the staff and volunteers are so passionate about their work. A brilliant tour, excellently organised. My 14 year son and I want to volunteer once a month now to help with those puppies (is he old enough ?!?)

Our guide was called Evan (I think ?!) and his beautiful brood bitch was called Gilly and they made the tour really interesting, particularly with the children.

User

Came here today after receiving this as a gift, and had such a good day. The staff and volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable and the dogs are just beautiful. All the dogs and pups are so well looked after and all seemed really happy. We met with John and his guide dog Khan and got to hear about his experiences and ask questions. We experienced blind folded walks and the sensory tunnel and of course socialising the pups was brilliant. I've got a disability as well and the staff went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable and could manage to join in with everything without drawing attention to it, so a massive thank you!!

User

Best day ever! Couldn't believe we got to cuddle and play with the pups. Everything is so clean and you can see care is number one priority. Lovely staff and a great cuppa tea! I know not many people get to do what we did today so feeling very privileged, thanks SO much! (I think our tour guide was Alison but I can't quite remember, sorry!!) X
