About Habitat For Humanity Great Britain

We are an international charity fighting extreme poverty housing in the UK and across the world.

Since 1976, we have built more than 1 million homes and served over 10 million people - working in over 70 countries.

Habitat For Humanity Great Britain Description

We are Habitat for Humanity, one of the world’s leading shelter NGOs.

We stand together with the poorest and the most vulnerable. And with them we build, toward a world where everyone has a decent place to call home and the opportunity for a life built on hope and potential, self-reliance and dignity.

Our work takes us across the world, on projects such as:

- Housing Lesotho's orphans;
- Funding small business loans in Tajikistan;
- Setting up refugee camps in Macedonia & emergency housing in Haiti;
- Building clean water projects in Delhi;
- Building affordable homes here in the UK.

We are constantly reaching out to those who need us most, to those who cannot reach out for themselves. And that is where you come in. Building a world where everyone has a safe place to call home will take all of us. By working together, we can all play a part. We can all make a difference.

We are Habitat for Humanity. And together we build.

Fourteen-year-old Mariam leads the way through the 1 square km Burj al-Barajneh camp, home to over 18,000 people including Syrian refugees and Palestinians.

Congratulations to one of our loyal, hardworking volunteers whose volunteering achievements won us a £4,000 donation. Krissie volunteered with us both in Cambodia and Brazil and we very much look forward to seeing her on another build in the future.
Well done Krissie! #lloydscharityawards2018

Everyone deserves a safe and decent home, but around the world more than 1.6 billion people still don't have adequete shelter. To raise awareness of this, we've been asking our supporters what home means to them, and here's what a few of them said 💚 #noplacelikehome #FTAppeal
We'd love to hear what you think! Let us know by commenting, or sharing a photo with a caption about what home means to you. Make sure to tag us!

"Unlike a “house” or a “flat”, a home is not something concrete. Its meaning is abstract and personal. The place one thinks of as “home” expresses one’s personal history, identity and relationships. Having a home is not just a matter of safety. It defines one as a person. That is why homelessness seems such a desperate condition."
Martin Wolf and FT writers share personal stories about what home means to them. #FTAppeal #noplacelikehome

Built in May 2014, this water point provides water for 25 households, roughly 300 people in the Chazanga community in #Zambia.
Over 1 billion people globally do not have access to improved water supply sources. Improvements in health from clean drinking #water and improved #sanitation can improve economic benefits for those living in poverty. Better health results in less work time lost and fewer healthcare bills to pay, as well as less transport costs to access treatment.

'“I prayed for a house — not a house, exactly. But a place where I could be secure,” Ms Tilton said. The possibility is almost unimaginable for a woman whose parents had both died by the time she turned nine, sending her into a succession of foster homes, runaway attempts, and then teenage pregnancies.
“It’s such a blessing for someone like me,” she said. “Without Habitat, I’d pretty much die homeless.”'

Imagine not having light in your house, or a door that locks, or windows for air. This is a reality for many families around the world.
By giving just £15, 5 families could recieve lamps so their children can study at night.
£32 means that 8 families could have taps with drinkable water.
... £55 for a window, fresh air and natural light.
or £120 to keep the family safe behind a lockable door.
Please help us provide safe, decent homes to more families worldwide. We thank you in advance for your generosity. #GivingTuesday2018

"In that moment all I can think of is why I am on a Women Build. It is not just because I believe in the power of volunteering. It is not just because I believe that women should help other women. And it is not just because I believe everybody deserves a home..." #WomenBuild #thisgirlcan

"This was at the end of the build on the last day. The eldest lady of the tribe, known to us as ‘grandmother’ had walked the short journey from her home to see final performance from our team and the tribe. After we had finished the dance, the grandmother began returning home. Two of our team members saw her heading back and helped her on her way. This summarised the build for me." (Adam, taken in India)
Congratulations Adam for winning the Habitat Photographer of the Year competition. We were amazed by the quality and creativity of all the entries. Our team unanimously voted for Adam's as it truly shows what it means to have Habitat team spirit!

Since 1976, Habitat has helped more than 22 million people build or improve the place they call home - that's an increase of 8.7 million since FY2017. Thank you for your on going support, which gives even more people the tools to build strength, stability and independence for themselves and their families.

"For this year’s Seasonal Appeal, FT writers have visited Habitat projects across the world to see its work. Their stories, told through words and photography, data journalism and video, are an inspiring testament to the resilience of people in crises - and to the vital importance of having somewhere to call home." #FTAppeal

It's #BlackFriday2018 and that means #GivingTuesday is right around the corner. This year we're asking you to help us remind vulernable families around the world that we are thinking of them.
With just £15 you could provide 5 new lamps to help refugee children do their homework.
With £32 you could provide 8 water taps to give families safe, clean drinking water.
... £55 could pay towards a new window for better ventilation, lowering the risk of respiratory disease.
Finally, with £120 you could provide a new door to help a family feel safe.
But every gift can make a difference, no matter how small. ❤

"In Lebanon, the charity has mended and improved 260 homes in the past year, helping Syrians, Palestinians and impoverished Lebanese. Since 2001, it has helped more than 4,500 families in the country. Its aim is to make the most meagre accommodation safer and more dignified." #FTAppeal

Anita Bairwa lives with her husband Ashok Bairwa, her in-laws, and four sons. Anita and Ashok were the first family who voluntarily opted for a toilet to be built in the Tonk district.
Anita says, “It was much needed. Monsoons were the toughest months when the streams overflowed and flooded the fields. During the winters, the temperature drops down a lot and hence makes it difficult to defecate out in the open and as the seeds are just sown, the fields are too open to defeca...te. Hence, we had to walk 2 kilometres further to the woods to defecate.”
With a toilet at home, she has promised to stop going to the fields and forest. Anita also makes it a point to keep the toilet clean. Her husband Ashok Bairwa was influential as an animator in his village Dhakiya as he encouraged more people to build toilets. #WorldToiletDay https://www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk/… /water-sanitation-a…/

We're thrilled to announce our seasonal partnership with the Hilti Foundation. This Christmas, Hilti will be generously matching all Christmas appeal donations. This means that any gift you give will be DOUBLED and have twice the impact in building a better future for families.
The implications of not having a safe, decent home are an endless nightmare. How do you keep your children safe? Where can you keep your things? Where do you get clean drinking water from? How do you ...sleep safely?
This Christmas we're asking you to help us support families who have No place like Home.
