About Hackney Museum

Hackney Museum uses its collections to create a trusted space to engage and empower local communities to tell their stories, share their concerns about local issues which are rooted in a historical context, and understand how their experiences fit alongside others'. Our collections represent the everyday lives of people in the borough, many of whom have migrated from different parts of the world. We use these collections to encourage under-represented voices to share their own experiences and memories. We do this by providing opportunities for people to learn about and engage with the borough's histories through: ● A permanent display which shares the long history of migration and settlement to the area● A dedicated learning programme and resources for schools designed and developed in consultation with local teachers● Partnerships with community organisations and residents, based on mutual benefit and trust● Innovative temporary exhibitions developed with and for a wide range of communities exploring local stories that are meaningful, relevant and timely for our audiences● A public programme of events to enable open conversations and discussions● Volunteering and skills development opportunities● Acquiring, caring for, and interpreting collections that represent the people of HackneyHackney Museum: ● Has communities and people, past and present, at the heart of the Museum and its practice● Promotes understanding and pride as space for shared experiences for people of all ages, religions, genders, ethnicities, and identities. ● Provides public platforms for discussions about Hackney, past and present, to facilitate change to support social justice● Helps people navigate their present, by learning from the past● Challenges the museum sector through innovative practice
