So who and when should you have an oncology massage? Each person journey living through cancer is an individual experience, as individual treatment plans vary person to person, so will each person reaction and tolerance vary. Some treatments can be quite invasive and make some people feel quite unwell. I therefore recommend starting a course of massage treatments 6 weeks post last treatment, this gives the body time to heal and start to recover. I suggest starting with a hal...f hour treatment to see how the body reacts and if you are able to tolerate massage, as previously mentioned this will depend on each individual. If the client responds well time can be increased at next visit. For any massage treatment I will require written consent from either oncologist/ consultant/ McMillan nurse to ensure they feel the client is well enough to start massage treatments. So how is oncology massage different from regular massage??
Oncology massage is a much slower massage , with much less pressure applied, no deep tissue work, hacking , cupping (Swedish massage) lots of effleurage long slow movements, which follows a massage routine adapted to each individual client. Intuitively, it seems that massage should benefit those of us living with cancer. Physically it can feel good, and itŌĆÖs hard to beat the emotional calm and serenity as weŌĆÖre pamp...ered by someone devoted to helping us. Some of the benefits of massage for people living with cancer include, lessened chemotherapy- related nausea, decreased stress and anxiety, lessened cancer fatigue, improved sleep, improved quality of sleep. It is important to understand though, that massage therapy is not a form of cancer treatment and will not prevent cancer from spreading or slow its growth.It is purely a way to offer some relief and relaxation . Morning, IŌĆÖve been inundated with questions regarding the oncology massage, thereŌĆÖs quite a lot of information involved, so IŌĆÖm going to break it down over my next few posts a hopefully it will answer the majority of your questions. When I was training the general rule in beauty therapy is as a beauty therapist is unable/ unqualified to treat any client with cancer,or for 5 years post treatment, thankfully therapies are evolving .
Oncology massage is the modification of exis...ting massage therapy techniques in order to safely work with complications of cancer and cancer treatment. Anyone who has ever received cancer treatment, from those in active treatment to those in recovery or survivorship, as well as those at the end of life, are best served by a massage therapist who has received training in oncology massage.
Essential aspects of an oncology massage therapist's skill set are an informed understanding of the disease itself and the many ways it can affect the human body; the side effects of cancer treatments, such as medications, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation; and the ability to modify massage techniques in order to adapt for these side effects, as well as for the disease.
ONCOLOGY MASSAGE ASSESSMENTS
Clinical assessments and adaptations to the massage session for someone experiencing cancer or with a history of cancer treatment are critical to providing a safe massage. Standard oncology massage intake questions include those pertaining to:
cancer treatment history tumor site or metastasis compromised blood cell counts lymph node involvement blood clots or blood clot risk medications (short and long term) vital organ involvement fragile or unstable tissue medical devices fatigue, neuropathy or pain changes in sensation late effects of treatment A properly trained massage therapist will ask questions about these issues and more, depending on your unique situation. Many of the changes that will be made to your session will be virtually imperceptible to you as a recipient (and others may be quite obvious), but they are essential to safety and proper support of your well being.

I absolutely love going to see Rebecca. I always leave feeling pampered and relaxed. I tried the paraffin wax manicure this week, which has left my hands feeling super soft. Today was my pre-holiday session getting my hands, feet, brows and lashes all ready for 2 weeks in the sunshine.
