ARE YOU A CARER?
A carer is anyone, including children and adults who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid.
TODAY, BETWEEN 10am AND 12pm, our colleague from Devon Carers will be available in reception with an information stand and would like to talk to any carers about the support available to them and how we can help. If you are a carer and would like information and/or advice then please pop in today during these times or ask at reception to book into one of our monthly clinics.

CARERS WEEK 10th - 16th JUNE 2019
Caring can be a hugely rewarding experience but carers often find it challenging to take care of their own wellbeing whilst caring. Its impact on all aspects of life from relationships and health to finances and work should not be underestimated. Caring without the right information and support can be tough.
... This Carers Week, we’re coming together to help carers get connected. There are 6.5 million people in the UK who are carers. They will be looking after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, or who needs extra help as they grow older.
Everyone has a part to play in connecting carers and helping them to get the support they need to care without putting off their own health needs or losing important relationships with others.
Here at the Surgery, we run a monthly support clinic for our carers, to receive advice and support or simply just come in for a chat with our lovely colleague Janet from Devon Carers. Call us now to book an appointment slot, they are usually on the last Wednesday afternoon of each month and last for 30 mins (or longer if you wish).
Janet from Devon Carers will be in reception at the Surgery this WEDNESDAY 12th JUNE from 10am-12pm with lots of information and advice - please pop in and see her if you would like more information or any questions. Alternatively you can call Devon Carers 03456 434 435 or visit their website on https://devoncarers.org.uk/

‘What matters to you?’ day - 6th June 2019
‘What matters to you?’ day aims to encourage and support more meaningful conversations between people who provide health and social care and the people, families and carers who receive health and social care.
Often in conversations we don’t really listen properly to what is being said. As Stephen Covey famously said: “most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply”. One of the main aims ...of ‘What matters to you?’ day is to help us develop greater intent to simply listen, to listen deeply and to understand. Why don’t we tend to listen well to others? Perhaps we are too busy or have our own opinions or views of the world that we are keen to share? Or any number of other reasons.
‘What matters to you?’ day is an opportunity to stop and think a little more about how we are listening, who we are listening too and what we are doing as a result.

Mental Health Awareness Week 13-19 May 2019
The theme this year is Body Image - How we think and feel about our bodies.
Last year, research by The Mental Health Foundation @mentalhealthfoundation found that 30% of all adults have felt so stressed by body image and appearance that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope. That’s almost 1 in every 3 people.
... Body image issues can affect all of us at any age and directly impact our mental health.
However there is still a lack of much-needed research and understanding around this.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week:
-The Mental Health Foundation will be publishing the results of a UK-wide survey on body image and mental health.
-They will look at body image issues across a lifetime – including how it affects children and young people, adults and people in later life.
-They will also highlight how people can experience body image issues differently, including people of different ages, genders, ethnicities and sexualities.
- They will use their research to continue campaigning for positive change and publish practical tools to help improve the nation’s relationship with their bodies.
