Can you guess what exotic creature is being described in this 1831 letter? 🦕🦄🐘🐪
“ …this is a creature whose hinder part is stout and heavy with legs longer and stronger than a greyhound with a long tail almost as big as my leg, his head and forepart no bigger than that of a rabbit and when it move don’t use the fore legs but hop along on the hind ones.” (92M95/F2/8/10 – 27th July 1831)

You know what we don't see a lot of in amateur films..? Interiors! With the challenges of filming good quality footage inside, most amateurs either didn't attempt it, or if they were super organised brought in big spotlights...

#OTD 130 years ago the now iconic Eiffel Tower was opened. Despite once being described as a ‘"truly tragic street lamp" (L. Bloy); the tower is universally recognisable…which makes cataloguing films like these indeterminately easier… (Paris Exposition 25th May 1937 - 25th November 1937. AV180/15)

Emma works part time at HRO, her favourite thing to do is working some magic with newly deposited archive material. “Some documents need quite a bit of organising when they arrive with us” says Emma “there is nothing more satisfying than taking a load of documents, putting them in order, cataloguing them so they are available to the public and making them look pretty in their new packaging. Hello, I’m Steff one of the Archives, Locals Studies and Certificates Assistants - ALSCA for short! You will usually find me assisting customers in the searchroom, or in document production retrieving items from the strongrooms.
This is such a varied role it is difficult to pinpoint my favourite part of it, but as a bookworm having instant access to our local studies library is definitely a highlight of my day!

I worked with the Archives in 2011-2012 on a Heritage 100 project. I found my colleagues at Hampshire Archives to be passionate, inspirational, creative and supportive. I really enjoyed the work and welcome the opportunity to work them again.
