Handsworth Dental Care is an approved foundation dental training practice based in a large Victorian building, in a pleasant suburb of Sheffield. The practice is based on three levels, with the Walker and Griffin dental laboratory situated in the basement, who are very approachable and always willing to offer support in the surgery for difficult cases. On the first floor we also have a resident chiropodist and chiropractor. The dentistry side of the practice consists of six large, well equipped surgeries, two patient waiting areas, a dedicated central sterilisation room. There is a large kitchen /dining room where we all relax together, with tea and coffee facilities, a microwave and cooker. There is a large car park at the back of the practice and we are also easily accessible via public transport.

The trainers, Jackie Luscombe and Jason Dean, both have over 20 years experience in general dental practice, are passionate about teaching and have recently passed the postgrad clinical education course with distinction and have a particular interest in advanced restorative treatment. We have two receptionists and the practice manager, Anne Coxon, organises the running of the practice, including continuous professional development, in house courses, lunch and learn sessions, etc and helped us to achieve the BDA good practice Silver award. Other dentists in the practice include Helen Gaskell who works part-time at the practice and part-time teaching oral surgery at the Leeds Dental Institute, Tulin Karavezirler who has a passion for paediatrics. Each dentist has a dedicated nurse working with them and we also have three hygienists eager to help with patient education, scale & polishes and fissure sealants. Our main aim is to offer you support and guidance in your first year as a dentist as well as experience; for endodontics we have both hand files and rotary systems in each surgery, a range of different restorative materials available and a wide spectrum of over 12, 000 patients, including both NHS and private patients.

The practice is situated on the main road in Handsworth and within just a few minutes walk there is an Asda Superstore, chemist, post office, local butchers and fish & chip shop. There is a regular bus service running to Sheffield City Centre every 10 minutes which has a train station and many restaurants, bars and clubs and we are just three miles from Junction 33 of the M1, providing convenient links to Rotherham, Chesterfield, Wakefield, Leeds, the peak district and Meadowhall Shopping Centre. For study days Don Valley House is less than four miles away (~10 mins by car) and Chesterfield Royal Hospital is under 15 miles away (~30 mins by car) so both are in easy reach both by car and public transport.
