Our Stage 2 course is aimed at dogs aged approx 6+ months that have graduated from our Stage 1 course or have had some basic training. This course helps your young dog…
- get to grips with further training skills - progress on your basic training - understand crisis management... - introduce distance control - teach your dog placement commands - plus some fun tricks too for focus, helping build the dog-owner bond
This course is essential as most young dogs reach puberty around this time, so it keeps them ‘on track.’ You will also receive handouts & summary email reminders each week.
Classes are held at: Nora Grace Hall (formerly known as the Red Cross), Faversham Close, Tring HP23 5BA
Our courses are designed to help you; understand your dog from puppyhood and beyond, learn what drives his behaviour, teach you how to promote the wanted behaviour, as well as learning how to deal with the unwanted stuff too – all in a calm and controlled way. Our classes are held both indoors and outdoors (weather dependent).
We focus on positive reinforcement methods, utilising three types of training for speed of acquisition of behaviours, reliability and greater dog-owner focus, these include; lure-reward, capturing and shaping. Numerous studies in recent decades have highlighted the fall-out associated with aversives used in ‘traditional’ training (for example, yanking of the lead, shouting, pushing the dog into position, use of corrector sprays etc), this can include increased risk of owner-directed aggression and anxiety. Therefore, compulsion methods together with equipment including choke collars, check chains etc, are strictly forbidden. All dogs must be fully vaccinated. All dogs must be fully vaccinated.
The course runs for 6 weeks and priced £70. Payment is required prior to the course start date to secure your place.

Dr Stanley Coren published his popular book How to Speak Dog: Mastering the Art of Dog-Human Communication eighteen years ago. In this, he described how Australian wild dogs would run up a tree and somersault to pee along the highest part of the trunk. His summation was that this scent mark communicated the ‘King Kong’ of dogs lived here. Now, a new study appears to validate Coren’s hypothesis. Did you know various studies over the years have shown how restful behaviours in dogs, such as sleeping, can be promoted through a number of means including auditory stimulation? Classical music - and - even the audio-book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: The Chronicles of Narnia read by Michael York has been shown to reduce barking in kennel environments! This easy-to-implement management tool can help spark the emotion-related limbic regions, including the reward centr...e, in the brain. Now, a new study has tested the influence classical music may have during spay surgeries in cats, and the research has produced positive results. With it being such a simple way to promote calmness, let’s hope more veterinary surgeons utilise this not only in the waiting room areas but during operations too. A new study conducted by the Royal Veterinary College has found that a third of all deaths in dogs aged under 3 years were caused by behavioural problems. This includes: ‘aggression’, ‘running away’, ‘fighting’, ‘barking’ and ‘over-excitability’. This study is said to be the biggest undertaken on behavioural reasons for deaths in young dogs in the UK, as researchers analysed data from around 250,000 dogs. The results suggest responsible breeding and improved socialisation by breeders together with better choices by owners when getting a puppy, plus improved training could reduce death risk in young dogs in the future. To find out more about this study, read the Veterinary Times 6th August issue.

Joan Collins once said “Age is just a number. It's totally irrelevant unless, of course, you happen to be a bottle of wine.” In the pet world there reigns an old myth that one regular year is like seven years for dogs, yet assigning a single number isn’t a practical way to think about age although there’s some logic behind this myth. Scientists observed that with optimal healthcare an average-sized, medium dog would live approximately one-seventh as long as its human owner. C...onsequently, the notion of seven “dog years” for every “human year” was born. However, this is an oversimplification as our pets not only age differently from us and one another but breed characteristics, size and state of health all play a role. Hence, vets tend to divide dogs into six categories: puppy, junior, adult, mature, senior and geriatric. You can help Fido live long past his “prime” by providing a well-balanced diet, physical stimulation and a bucket full of enrichment to bust those neurons! For more on aging in dogs, read our article from the ‘vault’ http://www.doglistener.tv/2015/09/ageing- in-dogs-and-me/

The Met Office are urging the public to stay out of the sun this week as the temperatures are set to reach up to 101F (38C), making the U.K. hotter than Jamaica by Thursday. For dog owners - be aware when the outside air temperature reaches 86F (30C), pavements can be as hot as 134F (57C), scorching paws. Once temperatures get to 88F (31C), the asphalt can reach as much as 144F (62C). For cat owners - remember to check greenhouses, sheds and conservatories before locking them up, in case cats become trapped inside and dehydrated. Be sun safe. 🐾 #Heatwaveuk

Data indicates animals experience varying degrees of emotionality. Whether we can ever really know if they are happy presents challenges. That’s because measures are, typically, derived from human studies and no two animals are exactly alike. Additionally, behaviours are frequently misinterpreted; a dog can bite whilst wagging his tail although people often regard wagging as a sign of happiness. Purring in cats is considered an indicator of contentment but injured cats may purr. The vibration occurs at a frequency shown to promote healing in bones and muscles. From the vault: There are anecdotal stories of dogs helping owners in true Lassie style but scientists argue this isn’t indicative of typical dog behaviour. Does that mean Fido can be selfish like us humans? Well, according to science, the answer is “yes”. Read more at: http://www.doglistener.tv/2016/08/are-dog s-selfish/

We have a particularly energetic cocker spaniel and Hanne's advice has been invaluable since we first got him (advice both during class and on email in between). We're now on puppy stage 3 and all the hard work is really paying off. Bennie is now a much calmer and well behaved pup, and loves doing tricks. Couldn't recommend Hanne highly enough.

User

This lady is an absolute magician with dogs. Our pup was incredibly poorly this year and wouldnt eat or drink, and thanks to some wonderful advice from Hanne, we managed to get her eating again, and she is now back to her normal bouncy self. Hanne you are brilliant!

User

Such a fun and positive experience... have been to other puppy classes and found this stage 2 course refreshing, engaging and so rewarding! We have learnt so much to practice between classes and continue on with after the course. Hanne sends you comprehensive notes from each class which will be particularly useful for reference as time passes. We are already looking forward to Stage 3 when the light returns! Thank you Hanne... you are amazing!

My dog was starting to become reactive towards others when we were out on a walk. I contacted Hanne and she's been working with me to help Roxy relax and cope when others pass by. I've had several face to face sessions working with Roxy and Hanne, plus emails and regular calls. The team provide a professional service and I'm seeing positive results, so happy to write this review!

My daughter and I have been attending stage 1 of Hanne's puppy training classes and have had lots of fun whilst gaining invaluable advice on handling our 4 month old Vizsla puppy. The sessions were brilliant adn the knowledge of Hanne and her team is outstanding. We are definitely signing up for stage 2!

It's been a nearly year now since I adopted my dog from a tierheim in Frankfurt, Germany. I was told very clearly by the workers that the dog I wanted was aggressive towards all other dogs and sometimes the same around strangers. Despite these warnings, I adopted him (now named Archie) and started what I knew would be a long and probably difficult journey. As Herffordshire is my original home I go there quite often to visit family and this was how I came to meet Hanne.

Recommended through an old friend Hanne had agreed to work with me despite me living in Germany. She asked all the normal questions about Archie's background (although I only knew what the tierheim had told me) but she was also keen to know everything about my daily routines, my home set-up and more importantly the triggers which would often result in Archie's 'aggressive' behaviour.

I was lucky enough to see Hanne in person when I popped back to England and within minutes I already knew I was working with an extremely experienced and professional dog trainer. She observed and pointed out so many little things I hadn't noticed about Archie's behaviour and gave me such simple but effective corrective measures. She worked with the both of us in the garden and taught me how to use treats and words to distract Archie and gain his full focus. We even worked with a 'pretend' so we could tackle Archie's biggest issues.

Since being back in Germany I have continue to keep in touch with Hanne and have been fortunate to Skype and telephone when necessary. She has transformed Archie in so many positive ways and I have become much more confident as his owner.

A year down the line and Archie has many dog friends and is a soft touch with all my friends and neighbours. He just needed some love, time and patience.

I would definitely recommend Hanne and her walk the dog team to help anyone who believes they also have a 'difficult' dog!

User

I thoroughly recommend Hanne’s training classes . I’m just finishing Puppy Course 1 and have learnt so much. As a first time puppy parent I was starting from scratch and both myself and Tashi have loved the sessions! Thank you so much 🐶🐾

I can't recommend Hanne Grice enough!

We have a 9 month old Whippador puppy. She's got such a friendly, loving personality but she could be quite a handful with jumping up at strangers and visitors. We dabbled in some training but we struggled to be consistent and didn't really have a structured plan to follow so we were getting pretty inconsistent results.

We were recommended to Hanne by a friend. Hanne was able to fit us in very quickly and we had a one to one session and then joined the 6 week Stage 2 (Junior) course.

I can't tell you how much Cody's behaviour has improved over the past 6 weeks!

She is calmer, happier, and really loves being trained. We didn't realise how quickly she was able to learn new behaviours until Hanne gave us the confidence in her and in ourselves. So 6 weeks in, and we have just finished our graduation class and our little Cody was a superstar! She won fastest outdoor recall and got 3rd place overall.

Thank you so much Hanne and Emma. Can't wait for stage 3! Cody will be in her element..... :)

Having just completed "Stage 3" of our puppy training classes I would like to say a huge "thank you" to Hanne and the team. I can't express how amazing these classes have been. Bonnie has thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and whilst the classes have been enjoyable and fun, we have also come out of them with a fantastic understanding of how to get the best from our dog, Bonnie. I visited other puppy training classes and although the cost was the same the difference in the quality of support, guidance and knowledge was outstanding. If you're thinking of training classes you won't get better than Hanne.

Hanne is a superb pet carer. .. The best you can find and I have tried many. She looks after my guinea pigs , rats and fish with passion, attentiveness and kindness... Just the best !

User

Hanne has been extremely supportive and helpful on the two occasions we've sought her advice. She brings a level of expertise to dog behaviour we've not found anywhere else and has always been extremely kind and responsive. We'd have no hesitation in recommending her – she's a star.

User

Hanne Grice is quite simply as good as it gets. Hanne has been helping us with our dogs for over 5 years now. She's been there along the way as our pups have gone through puppyhood, then adolescence and onto middle-age. Hanne is a rare combination of expertise and deep learning. She not only has years of rich experience of working with dogs, she is also extremely well versed in research and theory of animal behaviour . This sets her apart from others. The other key to Hanne's success is that she "gets" people and knows that dogs can only succeed if owners do the right thing. She's a wonderful coach, mentor, supporter, and champion. Do yourself a huge favour, work with Hanne and don't bother with the rest!

User

Had a phone consultation with Hanne today. Whilst I haven't used her services as I'm based in a different part of the country, her vast and professional knowledge of her field is very apparent. She was able to reference scientific evidence with ease, and clearly loves what she does. She was gave me some brilliant advice and some quick fixes on some issues i've been experiencing that helps me to understand my dogs behaviour much better, which means I'm sure I can rehabilitate and train him much more effectively. Thank you for taking the time to chat Hanne!
