Today’s book is Slow Dough, Real Bread by Chris Young of @realbreadcampaign - the recipe is one I contributed and uses up stale bread, some milk and a couple of eggs. Other than that you can chuck in what you like. I made it yesterday with some nettle pesto (thanks @mercedeswonkman ) some wild garlic and some @cheesemakers_of_canterbury Chaucer’s that had been lost in the fridge a frankly revolting amount of time. It’s frugal but absolutely delicious if I do say so myself. #realbread #coronacooking #cheapeats #smuglife

It’s been a few days since I shared a book. That’s largely because we have been deep into the dark arts of sourdough in my house. Today’s book, accompanied by coffee for a change from wine, is ‘Ideas in Food’ by Kamozawa & Talbot. It’s perfect for whiling away several hours, or indeed, days experimenting in the kitchen. There follows a great doughnut recipe for when you have too much starter for your bread making needs. Today’s book (and look - I’m drinking water) is Washoku Seasoning by Matsuda Michiko. Washoku is basically Japanese home cooking. One of the basic principles is that you add seasoning in the order sa-shi-su-se-so, or sugar, salt, vinegar, soy then finally miso to create balance. I have just started a barley miso and will happily share the results with any Margate people who want some. #margate #miso #washoku #japanesefood

So I’m still daytime drinking and reading in the garden. But also thinking of things to cook with all the stuff still lurking about. This late 90’s Classic from Annie Bell is always a good source of ideas for your veg. My copy was bookmarked with an old St John postcard at a great, adaptable recipe for chicory and beans. Today’s Tokyo skies were clear and blue and it was a perfect day to go temple hopping. Cold, early starts have been eased by the wonderful @yazawa_coffee_roasters this week. After an hour on the Tokyo metro I am ready for my cup of Nicaraguan gold.
