A team of HARP staff had a fantastic, educational and inspirational time at this week’s Under One Roof Conference held by Homeless Link.
The team came back from the conference with some fantastic insights and knowledge. Thank you to Homeless Link for such a great event, and thanks to Rob Saggs from CHESS Homeless for the photo!

Can you help HARP win £500 to help homeless people in Southend?
If you're shopping in Asda Shoeburyness this weekend, please take a moment to vote for HARP in their Green Token Just Giving Programme. Between now and September, every time you shop in the store, you'll be given a token that you can use to vote for a local charity, with the winning charity receiving £500 at the end of the 3 months.
Make your green token count!

Homeless people are almost 60 times more likely to visit A&E and have two or more chronic medical conditions according to new research by The University of Birmingham.
Lead investigator Dr Vibhu Paudyal states “Ill health can be both the cause and consequences of homelessness. Hence, early and opportunistic prevention and treatment of mental health, substance and alcohol dependence can prevent ill health and, for many, the repeat cycle of homelessness.”
This is why HARP work ...hard to help homeless people in Southend to get the support they need for their mental and physical health and provide homelessness prevention services to those at risk, as well as helping rough sleepers to get off the streets.

Today is Multiple Disadvantage Day and homelessness is rarely the only issue our service users face. Many are also dealing with addiction, mental ill health, and poor physical health all at the same time. Some may be victims of domestic abuse, be in debt, or have other problems that only complicate their situation further. That's why we were so pleased to see The National Lottery Community Fund raising awareness of multiple disadvantage today.

Thank you to the staff of NatWest Southend who raised an amazing £284.26 through their cake sale for HARP. Every penny raised helps us to support homeless people in the local area.

Along with the sunshine, June's figures are now in...
In June we saw a total of 41 new service users. 16 of them were sleeping rough, 14 were sofa surfing, and 11 were at risk of losing their accommodation and needed help and support to keep it. All 41 received specialist advice on their situation.
We were also able to help 19 people into HARP accommodation, and 4 people moved on from HARP to live independently.
... We served around 6,136‬ meals to our residents and Day Centre service users, and also gave out 264 night packs and 17 emergency food parcels in the month of June.

The heat wave has increased demand for summer clothing and swimwear in our charity shops and clothing bank, so your donations are urgently needed. We welcome women's, men's and children's clothing, as well as towels, shoes and sandals, handbags, and hats.
You can bring your donations to any of our charity shops and we are always grateful for your donations and support >>> bit.ly/HARPDonate

With temperatures set to soar this weekend, please spare a thought for homeless people as you head out in the sunshine. People who are sleeping rough are particularly at risk of severe dehydration, sunstroke and heat exhaustion in this hot weather.
There are ways in which you can help anyone you see sleeping rough. Learn the little ways you can make a big difference >>> bit.ly/HARPWarmWeather

Some service users at one of our properties recently came together to create a lovely vegetable garden at the house. The residents are currently being supported in their transition from homelessness to independent living, and activities like this are an important part of that journey.
We loved the result!

We’d like to say a big thank you to two local Co-ops for choosing HARP as the beneficiary of their 'Food for Thought' fortnight, which invites shoppers to donate food items for charity up to 7th July. If you'd like to make a contribution, just top up your shop next time you're in the Co-op on London Road in Leigh-on-Sea, or West Road in Shoeburyness, and drop your donation off in the special box.

As the builders prepare to move into the premises of our new charity shop, which will be opening in Southend soon, we need your donations more than ever!
To help us stock the shop, we welcome donations of good quality men's, women's, and kids’ clothing, towels and bed linen, bric-a-brac, and other items. As always, items donated will be considered for use by our service users if needed, and anything else will be sold in our shops with the profits going towards our work with ...homeless people in Southend.
You can drop off your donations at any of our existing charity shops. You'll find all the details of how to donate on the website >>> bit.ly/HARPDonate

We were inspired to hear former HARP resident, turned volunteer, Marie join Kirsty from Off the Streets, one of our partner organisations, talking about drugs, addiction and homelessness on Gateway 97.8. Marie also runs The Link, Southend On Sea's Aspirations Day Programme in Southend.

As our HARP24 runners come to the end of their 24-hour challenge, we'd like to take this chance to thank all the volunteers who have worked day and night to make our biggest event of the year happen. We appreciate the dedication, commitment and stamina it takes to give up your time for something like this. We couldn't do it without you!

HARP24 RUNNERS START THEIR 24 HOUR CHALLENGE

User

Good luck to over 460 runners taking part in HARP24, our 24-hour running festival starting at noon today. Teams, solo runners, and of course our fabulous volunteers will be coming together at Westcliff Rugby Club for 24 hours of fun (and some sweat!). And, of course, we can't forget our young supporters, aged between 4-14 years-old, who are taking part in HARP2.4, our junior fun-run, at 3pm.
This is our biggest event of the year so thank you to everyone who's involved!

The wonderful corporate volunteer team from Lloyds Bank Cardnet in Basildon gave up their Friday to put together nearly 500 runners’ bags for HARP24. Thank you for your hard work and time!
Our 24-hour running festival starts tomorrow at Westcliff Rugby Club - the excitement is building!

As if it wasn't enough that he works his socks off to help our service users, Andrew Marshall, HARP team leader, completed the Sundried Southend Triathlon over the weekend to raise money towards our work to end homelessness. Andrew tackled the wind, rain and waves to complete the 750m swim, 20km bike, and 5k run, already raising over £300 for HARP.
Thank you for tackling the elements for us Andrew - hats off to you!
