To celebrate LGBT Pride Month we are showcasing the range of LGBT related library books we have, displayed in the colours of the rainbow flag. Today is red which symbolises life.
The rainbow flag originated in San Francisco in 1978 and was designed by artist Gilbert Baker for the Californian city's Gay and Lesbian Freedom Day Parade. Since then it has become a worldwide emblem of gay pride and gay-friendly areas.
YC Hertfordshire supports young LGBTQ people through 19 projec...ts across the county and through the 'Who not What' group at https://www.ychertfordshire.org/…/suppo rt-for-young-lgbtq-…/

On Thursday 6th July, local children’s author and writing coach - Lou Treleaven paid a visit to our Chatterbooks group here at Harpenden Library! Lou explained that although she had been writing stories since she was a little girl it is only recently that her books have been published – so don’t give up on your dream… The books Lou brought along had a space theme – which is very fitting for this year’s summer reading challenge as some of here titles also happen to feature i...n the book collection of this year’s SRC. She read a short chapter from one of her books selected by the group which had us all captivated. We learnt how easy and fun it was to talk and create an alien – using the tool of a ‘cootie catcher’ (paper fortune teller), Lou had her own design and the group had the opportunity to then design their own. This gave everyone the opportunity to discover how much fun it can be being an alien and coming from space! Many thanks to Lou Treleaven for making the afternoon a special one! Today is the start of Refugee Week and the theme of 2019 is ‘You, me and those who came before’, an invitation to explore the lives of refugees – and those who have welcomed them – throughout the generations. We've put on a display of adult fiction and non-fiction and children's stock to reflect the theme, which are all available for loan. Other titles can be seen here https://bit.ly/31FrpMS #RefugeeWeek2019

It's Men Health Week and we have a display in the front of the library to help raise awareness. Men are supposedly obsessed with numbers but when it comes to their own health, there are quite a few they don’t know. Men’s Health Week 2019 takes up that challenge. You can check out what these numbers are on the website https://www.menshealthforum.org.uk/mens-h ealth-week-2019-nu… #menshealthweek 2019

Today is Empathy Day, which was founded in 2017 to promote empathy as a skill that can be learned especially through reading.
"On Empathy Day we want everyone to: READ because stories and book characters build our real-life empathy."
... There are so many wonderfully inspiring books to chose from, we have a small display (specifically for children and young adults) of just some that can help us understand each other a little better. #ReadforEmpathy https://www.empathylab.uk/
