Hartshanger Exmoor Holidays Description

Little Hanger
The self-catering apartment, Little Hanger, has been converted from the original coach house and stables of Hartshanger, an Edwardian villa set above the village of Porlock in the heart of the Exmoor National Park . We have two self-catering apartments and have lived here since 1996 with our dog called Rufus and the occasional deer and badger. The house is situated within grounds of about 5 acres with lovely views over Porlock Bay towards Wales. In the spring and summer the mostly wooded hillside is ablaze with colour from bluebells, azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, primroses and wild cyclamen. It is a peaceful place, with the only sounds being that of bird song, the surf on the beach below and the occasional call from a seagull, buzzard or sheep. It is the ideal place for those wanting to get away from it all and relax. Perfect for a romantic getaway. We have an all-weather tennis court for the more energetic to use. We have racquets and balls for you to borrow so no excuses on that score!

Little Hanger sleeps up to six guests in two double rooms and a twin room. The main double bedroom has sea views and an en-suite with power shower and the second one has a patio door to a juliette balcony. In the twin room, one bed can be removed to accommodate the cot. The main bathroom has a bath with an electric shower over it. There is a large walk in airing cupboard with hanging space to dry coats etc. The kitchen is fully fitted for at least six with a full sized electric oven and hob, dishwasher, fridge and microwave. The kitchen opens on to the dining area and sitting room where there is a log burner, logs provided FOC. Patio door leads out to a small private garden with table and chairs and a barbeque area. From here you can enter the rest of the grounds and it is a short walk to the tennis court.
Porlock is a living village 12 months of the year. There are two churches, C of E and Methodist and a medical practice. As for shops, we boast two small supermarkets, a butcher, cheese shop, pharmacy, hardware store, Post Office, two art galleries, antique shop, pet shop and ladies clothes, garage and numerous gift and sweet shops. For those who do not wish to cook there are at least ten places to eat, from breakfast to dinner in two pubs, various restaurants, tea rooms and hotels - at prices to suit all pockets.
Porlock, situated “twixt moor and sea” is the ideal base for exploring the beautiful Exmoor National Park whether by foot, bike or car. Exmoor has something to offer everyone, from wild animals and birds, spectacular views, archaeology and vernacular architecture to steam trains, walks, rural museums and National Trust properties. All are within easy reach of Porlock.
There is ample space for parking cars and it is safe as we are well off the road.
High Hanger
The self-catering apartment, High Hanger, is on the top floor of Hartshanger and is approached up a flight of stone stairs to the entrance door. Another flight inside will take you up to this wonderful top floor penthouse. The views from the balcony and roof terrace stretch from Aberthawe on the coast of wales in the East to Swansea and the Mumbles in the West. Nash Point light is directly opposite.
High Hanger sleeps 4 in a double, with a basin and a twin with a round window and views of the sea. There is a bathroom with a roll top bath, shower room with electric shower and a separate toilet. The kitchen has a fridge-freezer, full sized hob and large combination convection, grill and microwave oven. It is fully fitted for 4.
The sitting /dining area has an electric fire and seating with flat screen TV. The balcony room has a sliding patio doors onto the balcony which has a wall ladder up to the roof, with sunbeds.

The old tack room in the stable yard under Little Hanger, has a washing machine and a tumble drier; airer to dry clothes; freezer; space to store your bikes or pushchair etc. Outside you will find a tap with short hose to wash the mud off your bicycles or dog. This laundry /store room is shared with Little Hanger our other self-catering apartment.

These amazing birds can be seen just accross Porlock Vale at the Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre. Well worth a visit

This year there are even more blubells to see and the big magenta rhododendrons above the house are coming into bloom. This really is the most beautiful month in our garden.

Beautiful photo of a wonderful view, Porlock Bay at it's best.

Tennis court.

Today is #MerchantNavyDay, and as Mike was in the Merchant Navy we are flying the #RedEnsign. September 3 was the day we actually went to war with Germany after they invaded Poland on the Ist. Just hours later the SS Athenia was torpedoed with the loss of 128 passengers and crew. The first of many hundreds of merchant ships and thousands of crew to face the same fate. They should be remembered, we owe them.

Our third flower this year on our Queen of the Night, nearly missed it. The droopy flower opened two nights ago. By morning both with have the droops!

I have just been to see this year's Flower Festival, theme is Inspirational Women. Just a few photos of some of the beautiful arrangements to be seen in our Parish Church. These pictures show:- Suffragettes, Florence Nightingale, Dame Vera Lyn and Ada Lovelace. If you are in the area, drop in and see it. Tea and cake just by the font!

This beautiful bracket fungus has the wonderful name "Dryad's Saddle" which is much easier to say than Polyporus Squamosus. Mike found it growing on an old sycamore stump just above Little Hanger. The books says you can eat it when very young, the edges may be best!!! Not about to try it though.

June is the most amazing month, The rhododendrons and bluebells may have finished but June sees ( that is if you are quick enough) the once annual flowering of the Queen of the Night. The near nightly sunsets are a sight worth seeing as in this view taken from the garden looking West towards Porlock Weir.

User

Our beautiful rhododendrons, which can bee seen from the shore, are nearly over. It is such a shame when they go from full flower to a carpet! But what a beautiful carpet it is!

User

The Duck Race yesterday was really enjoyable. The course this year was made up of lots of new hazzards! The Beast of Exmoor, Dunster Castle, Tarr Steps, Pyles Mill Waterwheel and lots more. Well done to Phil and all his helpers for producing such a fun day.

User

Our English bluebells may not be flowering just yet but the Spanish ones, the magnolias and the rhododendrons are looking very good in this wonderful sunny weather.

The sun is back on his favourite perch but he is ignoring the rainbow behind. The rain does actually provide some beautiful sights. We have never seen such a low one before.
