Havering Parks & Open Spaces Description

Havering has a great deal of parkland and protected countryside. In fact it covers more than half the borough. The council manages just under 100
diff erent sites varying in size from small village greens, to urban parks. In partnership with community groups, we work to constantly improve these
valuable assets.

Bee Swarms.
The photos are of one in St Andrews Park Hornchurch today.
It is that time of year where you may see swarms of bees in some of the Boroughs Parks and Open Spaces. Please do not be alarmed, to put it simply these are bee's that are moving home due to overcrowding in their nest. A new Queen is produced and the old Queen leaves with around half the nest. What you see are the bees clustering around their Queen to protect her why scouts find a new home. These swarms will move off in due course when they have a new home. As long as you leave them alone they are harmless.

Volunteers helping out at the Garden for the Blind at Harrow Lodge Park came across a log that contained both larvae and adults (Male and female) of the Stag Beetle. The log has been placed in a safe place to give them the best possible chance.

Last week Beavers from 21st Romford visited Haynes Park with the Parks Officer to build a bug hotel and look for mini beasts in the conservation area of the Park. Not only did they have some fun but the the activities they did here count towards one of their badges.

Work has started this week on updating the outdoor gym area at Hylands Park thanks to a grant from Veolia Environmental Trust. Hylands Park was one of the first outdoor gyms in the Borough and it was showing its age. As part of the refurb many of the older items are being replaced as the picture in this posts shows. The work is expected to take around two weeks.

PARKING NEWS Hornchurch Country Park and Harrow Lodge Park
Hornchurch Country Park - The new extra parking spaces at the Squadrons Approach Car Park are now open. To access this extra parking does require you to cross the path up from the Parkway so please take care when entering and exiting the new parking area. Walkers and cyclist please be mindful when you walk/cycle along this path that at this point a car might be crossing.
Harrow Lodge Park - Work has started on the new sports centre and this means the main car park is now closed and alternative parking has been created behind the sports centre. Also to allow for cabling works for the new centre one side of the main drive is being dug up over the next couple of weeks meaning it is down to one lane so please follow the directions of the construction staff.

Regulars at Harrow Lodge Park may have noticed some new equipment appear in the last couple of weeks. This is Trim Trail equipment laid out over approximate 2km route through the Park. So if you fancy doing something different other just run or walk through park then check it out. There are 14 stations that will work out upper body, heart, abdominal areas etc. They have suggested exercises with most of them and many are fitted with QR codes that will give you more information. There are signs about the trail located behind the sports centre, on the path from Albany road and just over the bridge from Warren Drive car park.
