Further recognition of the huge difficulties with language development that many children face. Well done BBC 😊

***Developmental Verbal Dyspraxia Awareness Month*** Today is the first day of May, which also means that it is the first day of Verbal Dyspraxia/Apraxia Awareness month. Here is why I think this month of raising awareness is so important.
❤️ Verbal Dyspraxia/Apraxia is a neurological speech disorder. Children with Verbal Dyspraxia/Apraxia have difficulty making the precise movements required for speech but there is no evidence of nerve or muscle damage. They have difficulty... producing individual speech sounds and sequencing sounds together in words. This makes their speech unintelligible even to family members. There is no quick fix and no cure.
Please share this post, let's make sure our voices get heard and we get some understanding out there for everyone living with and touched by Verbal Dyspraxia/Apraxia ❤️

A useful guide to the language skills expected of 4-5 year olds. This may be useful for all the parents of children due to start school in September 2019 😊

Seeing as I didn't know this service was available for parents, and I'm an SLT, I'm guessing that not many parents have heard of it either! This is a free advice service for all parents, carers or professionals e.g. Teachers. You will be able to speak directly to a speech and language therapist and get some advice and information immediately. Just to be clear I am not affiliated with I CAN in any way. I just like to pass on information and services that I think will promote speech and language therapy and provide parents and carers with specialist advice.

A wonderful personal insight into living with developmental verbal dyspraxia. Provision to support this complex and severe speech sound disorder is limited on the NHS. In some areas only a diagnosis from a specialist service in London will kick start even a small amount of intervention. This leaves local, fully qualified, Speech and Language Therapists frustrated that their diagnosis appears to be less valuable and ignored. As well as the feeling of not being able to do enoug...h to support these children effectively.
Not all cases are as severe as this article and some children do not require as many years of intervention, but the struggle is just as real for all of them and their family.
The delight on a child's face when a sound is achieved and the tears in a parent's eye knowing that even a tiny amount a of progress has been made is priceless and it's why I love my job 🗨 💖

I dare you not to well up... I wonder if this rings true for so many people who have children with additional needs. The analogy is so beautifully written. They are called 'special' educational needs for a reason... Each and every child is special and unique ❤️

The awareness of Autistic Spectrum Disorder in girls is greatly reduced compared to the recognition in boys. Girls with ASD can often present differently to the 'classic' perception of what autism is. They are typically more sociable than people expect and demonstrate a desire to communicate, however, they don't get it quite right, which can lead to misunderstanding and anxiety. Their difficulties can be subtle but the impact just as great on their ability to learn, make and ...sustain friendships and manage their complex mix of emotions in the rich sensory environment in which they have to function. This poster is not a diagnostic tool, as I'm sure we could all tick at least a few of the boxes! However, I thought it was worth sharing to raise the awareness of the possible undiagnosis of ASD in girls and to help professionals recognise some possible signs that may need further investigation.

I've had a few enquiries about how to support early language development so I have attached the following links from the Talking Point website for ages 12-18 months and 18-24 months:

Lovely animated video going some way to explain autism and how it can impact on the way children view and experience the world around them 😊

Not sure how many of you watched the series "Making a Murderer" but this is a very interesting blog on the role speech, language and communication difficulties played in the police investigation and the responses Brendan gave and why.
