ARTICLES:
I have written articles on various psychological topics that have gone viral. Check out my Medium profile to read those: https://medium.com/@HazelGale

ABOUT COGNITIVE HYPNOTHERAPY:

The science of thought is a wonderful and fascinating thing. We tend to think of our own minds as inscrutable, yet you could be surprised by how straightforward positive change can really be.

If you have an emotion, behaviour or limitation that doesn’t seem congruent with the rest of your personality, then Cognitive Hypnotherapy could be the best way to regain a sense of balance and control over your life.

Cognitive hypnotherapy uses a range techniques, from a variety of different therapies and sciences such as positive psychology, Gestalt, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and traditional hypnotherapy. Everyone is different, so by incorporating all these approaches rather than sticking to a single system, we ensure that the most effective route can be taken with each individual client.

I am a competitive athlete, so I specialise in sports hypnosis (although this is by no means the limit of my practice).

I also teach the CPD course on Sports Hypnosis at the Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapy (ICH), London.

ABOUT THE SESSIONS:

Every client (and their issue) is treated differently. What I mean by that is that I treat the individual rather than the problem. We'll all develop our own issues in a way that is particular to us, so I don't believe in one-size-fits-all approaches. I don't use pre-written scripts as many hypnotherapists do, instead I develop suggestion patterns and processes that are entirely tailor-made for each individual.

Visit my website to learn more about Cognitive Hypnotherapy: http://www. hazelgale. co. uk

If you'd rather hear it from someone else, you can read the full page article about my sports hypnosis practice from April's Metro Newspaper: http://metro. co. uk /2013 /04 /22 /sports-hypnotherapy-going-under-to-get-on-top-of-your-athletic-performance-3654013 /

HOW I FOUND HYPNOTHERAPY:

I first discovered hypnotherapy as a kickboxer training towards the ISKA World Championships. Although I had previously been pushing myself to train through any illness and injury along the way, chronic fatigue (ME) was giving me serious problems and I was coming back from 6 months off to compete in one last tournament (or so I told myself).

Hypnotherapy not only enabled me to win that tournament, but it really changed my life in many other ways: socially, professionally and athletically, I became a new person after choosing to explore my mental and emotional world.

BECOMING A THERAPIST:

After using hypnosis to such effect in my personal life, I felt that it was an avenue I had to explore professionally. I achieved a Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy at the Institute Of Clinical Hypnotherapy in London where I have now been asked to teach the Sports focussed CPD module.

I have also completed a qualification in Sports Hypnosis and graduated from the Quest Institute with a diploma in Cognitive Hypnotherapist and a Hypnotherapist Practitioner's Diploma (HPD).

In case you missed it last week, here’s my podcast interview with Mandy Lehto. I loved recording this, and it’s been getting some really wonderful feedback.
Running time: 33mins
CONTENTS:... • How I *thought* I’d found “a language” in fighting that perfectly told the story I wanted to express – that I was strong and worthwhile and dominant
• How working more, harder and faster to be good enough worked against me
• How “Monsters” show up in our lives. What story does yours tell over and over?
• How to move from “Magical Thinking” to “Trans-Systemic Thinking” and escape victim consciousness
• The two traits of the autonomous
• Why fatigue can be a symptom of dishonesty

Arianna Huffington’s new(ish) venture, Thrive Global, have reposted my article on fixed and growth mindsets (yay!)
You may have read it before, but if not, take a look!

User

This is good. There’s an irritating advert part of the way through but it only lasts for a few seconds.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Is there someone in your life who always tries to fix your pain rather than acknowledge it? How do you deal with that? Or, is there someone you often try to rescue? And, if so, what can you do differently next time to help them more effectively?

It’s due to strange coincidence that three different podcasts I’ve been invited onto have all aired in the same week. Here’s the third with Mandy Lehto. I think this was my favourite as we recorded it, so if you’re choosing one to listen to, this could be the pick (it’s about 30 mins).
Just a little edit: Mandy says in the text (and possibly on the podcast, I haven’t checked) that my world titles were in both kickboxing and boxing. That’s an error. They were in kickboxing. Ju...st national titles in boxing.
Here’s Mandy’s blurb:
“You can’t achieve your way to self worth. You can’t force the squinchy part of yourself into submission – the part that feels weak and less-than and shameful.
You can’t exercise it into oblivion, or smother it with success or any other form of doing. You can’t hide it behind shiny things. Not for long, anyway.
It’s an inside job.
Ask Hazel Gale.
She’s a former world-champion kickboxer who drove herself to breaking point, ignoring the physical signs that she was burning out. She numbed her fears of weakness and not-enoughness with punishing workouts.
Her body had other plans, but Hazel didn’t want to listen. It was a fight she couldn’t win. “I had to crash,” she says. “You can’t wage war on yourself and emerge victorious.” Burnt-out and unrecognisable to herself, Hazel met her most formidable opponent yet, her fear of weakness.
Hazel shares how she let go of old coping mechanisms, and how she befriended her “Mind Monster,” the part of herself that she’d thrashed against for decades.
Now, as an author and cognitive hypnotherapist, she’s made a movement of it – the Mind Monster movement. She shares how you can leave behind your own pre-patterned behaviours that no longer serve you.
We talk about:
How Hazel found “a language” in fighting that perfectly told the story she wanted to express – that she was strong and worthwhile and dominant
How working more, harder and faster to be good enough worked against her
How “Monsters” show up in our lives. What story does yours tell over and over?
How to move from “Magical Thinking” to “Trans-Systemic Thinking”
The two traits of trans-systemic thinkers
Why your fatigue is a symptom of your dishonesty
If you’re ready to relate to yourself differently, join us.
Thanks for tuning in. I’m so glad you’re here.”

Here's another podcast for you. This one is with Adam Eason, who runs a very credible hypnotherapy school in the UK and produces one of the most popular hypnosis podcasts in the world: "Hypnosis Weekly"
In two parts, we discuss the following.
From the beginning: ... - My approach to hypnotherapy and my definition of “hypnosis” - Some TMI stuff about how I used self-hypnosis to affect my menstrual cycles during my time fighting (and therefore needing to make weight) - The advice I give to therapists just starting out
From 34 minutes onwards: - My story of boxing competition and burnout - My experience of fighting after working on my mental state - Mind Monsters, how to love your monster and the future of the project
It also includes shout-outs for Trevor Silvester (for his work with Quest), Rachel Moore (for her brilliant New Years themes idea), Stanley-Rose Buckle (for her amazing Mind Monster song "Ebony and the Monster") and Sarah Hyndman (for her research into the psychology of typography and our workshop, Words for Change).

Here’s a podcast that came out in the summer (I missed it at the time!)
Urban Curiosity with Clare Barry asks the question of how to stay emotionally well while under the pressure of big city living.
We cover these things:... • My journey to burnout and how to spot the symptoms for yourself • The danger in seeking the quick fix • How to ask for and accept the help that’s available (and my experience of therapy with Trevor Silvester) • What happens when you fight against your fear • The key to developing self-awareness

Question no.7 of the Proust Questionnaire: Who would play you in the film of your life? ✨ Definitely one of the best questions! I struggled with it though. This was my answer: ✨ “I have no idea, but I find it hilarious that my first thought was Lena Dunham, followed swiftly by Danny DeVito.”... ✨ What’s that about?? ✨ Here’s why I’m posting these random questions: ✨ I recently responded to a series of questions from the publishers who will be printing “Fight” in France and French Canada next year. They included something called a Proust Questionnaire (only a French publishers would have a Proust Questionnaire!). ✨ These questions are very simple, and *very* revealing! Honestly, I rolled my eyes at first, but once I started answering, I found myself having a few real lightbulb moments. ✨ So, I’m going to post them all here, one at a time. I’d absolutely love to hear your answers (but if you’re too shy to share them, do just write them out for yourself. You could be surprised by what you find yourself coming out with). ✨ Oh, and one you’ve responded, don’t forget to apply the insights to your present day life! . . . . . #selfawareness #selfacceptance #selfhelp #psychology #proust #selfdevelopment #picoftheday #photooftheday #coaching #therapy #happiness #knowledge #transformation #selflove #selfhelpbooks #quotesaboutlife #instaquotes #empathy #livefully #existence #life #thoughts #livebetter #thinkbig #hypnotherapy #question #selfloveclub #livewell #wellness #aqua

Hi all, I'm super excited to share this event with you. The ultra-inspiring Sarah Hyndman (of Type Tasting) and I will be running our second Words for Change workshop on the 17th of November in Dalston, London.
Consider these questions:
... What would a successful and confident life look like for you?
And, if there were a change you’d like to make to start moving in that direction now, what would that be? We'll show you how to make that change in the most fun and fascinating way possible.
Here's what author and Journalist, Lucy Fry, had to say about the previous event:
"I was very excited by the feeling I came away with: a sense of potential, a newfound respect for change and also a fresh wave of love for myself, my courage and vulnerability. This is a system that should be on the national curriculum!"
You can read more about the workshop and book your place here (earlybird discount currently available): https://www.mindmonsters.online/words-for -change
And be aware that we're capping the number of attendees at just ten, so if you want to get involved, don't dally!
Hazel xx

While I was fighting (and therefore having to make weight) I entertained pretty much every eating disorder going.
At first, I restricted my intake dramatically. I did this for just under a year. I thought I was nailing it at the time; training twice a day on something like 700 calories. Looking back, I can see that I was quite clearly anorexic (albeit relatively mildly).
But I couldn’t maintain that for long, so a binging habit started creeping in, which I’d counter with exc...

In Jan, I gave my first #publicspeaking performance. I was nervous (very nervous) so I took measures to make sure I didn’t completely freeze on stage. . In my next few Insta posts, I’m going to share the simple tips/tools that helped me ditch the #stagefright and end up thoroughly enjoying my first year of #speaking. . These first 3 are about prepping the material.... . 1: I DEFINED MY CORE INTENTION First, I needed to know my purpose, and it needed to inspire me. . I set out to write one sentence that encapsulated my core aim. It was to focus on my audience rather than myself and it was going to begin with the word “To…” (e.g. “To share … with someone”, “To give someone …”). Here’s what I came up with: . “To share the insights that turned my life around.” . Not exactly revolutionary, granted, but this sentence gave me a powerful filter; material that served my intention made the cut, anything else was edited out. . 2: I CHOSE VULNERABILITY OVER VIRTUOSITY I wanted to be human on stage. In order to fulfil this aim, I decided to start with a personal anecdote, and to own the vulnerable parts of my story. . These were the three questions I wanted to answer within the first minute of talking: 1. Who am I? (Who is the audience hearing from?) 2. What are the relevant challenges that I’ve been faced with? (What’s my story?) 3. How have those things brought about change for me? (What can the audience learn here?) . 3: I CONSIDERED MY AUDIENCE I was speaking at the Festival of Doers, which is run by a company called Driven Woman. I’m fairly sure I sit in that category myself, so writing a relevant speech posed little challenge. Still, I made sure that my talk included anecdotes, examples and slides that other “driven women” would relate to. This pic shows said women looking wonderful. I took it from the stage I Zürich last Friday 🙂 . . . . . #mindmonsters #fightthebook #vulnerability #vulnerable #anxiety #success #reclaimthehappy #fearoffailure #doers #mentalhealth #performance #psychology #shadow #mind #self #selfawareness #selfacceptance #picoftheday #photooftheday #publicspeaker #keynote #selfdevelopment #holdyourmoments #wellness #selfhelp #presenting #wonderlust

I was hesitant to do Hazel's Four Week Online Course for Histamine Intolerance as it seemed too good to be true and also wondered how it could possibly work online. I've been incredibly impressed with the quality of the material - written coursework and audio recordings - and delighted by the progress I've made already. I've learned so much about myself and my ability to heal. Furthermore, Hazel's compassionate guidance through the Facebook group pulls it all together and the additional articles and links lend further support. Quite frankly, I don't know how she does it! Of course, you have to be open and willing to do the work in order to see results. I am so grateful to Hazel and Yasmina for putting the course together to help so many who are struggling.

I don't think I can do Hazel justice in a few words, but to say doing her course has been life changing, illuminating and inspiring would be a gross understatement. I have found the whole course fascinating, with Hazel providing regular support in what is obviously a meticulously prepared course. Hazel's course has been challenging, moving and unsettling, but through persistence it has been ultimately rewarding. The thing I like the most is that I am learning to live in the moment;- a cliche I know, but it is much underestimated. I am learning to take a deep breath and take more in and to also understand and accept what has made me tick and start to move on toward being a more content and accepting person through the simple process of change, just one bit at a time. It's only been 4 weeks, but I'm much more content than I was before and already I am handling some of life's "curve balls" much better and I'm looking forward to applying what I have learnt to all aspects of my life!

I can't recommend these sessions with Hazel enough. The impact, not only on my sports performance but on my life and happiness, in such a short amount of time has been transformational :) Cant wait to keep moving forwards and using the things Ive learned .. Thank you!

Hazel delivered one of the most touching key note talks at Festival Of Doers London in January 2018. She literally put the whole auditorium of professional women in tears with her authentic account on her journey. So powerful was her message that we immediately booked her to speak at our Zurich event in September where she received a standing ovation from the audience. Hazel is one of the best speakers of this era.

Having known Hazel previously whilst I was a student in her kickboxing classes, I had been fortunate enough to participate in a few group hypnosis seminars - whilst at that point it was nothing more than curiosity in an area that intrigued me, it became the one thing that got my head in the right place when I needed it most.

Having been given the opportunity to grade for a belt I never truly believed I was capable of achieving, things just started going backwards; training became a source of stress, technical ability seemed to abandon me and displaced/inappropriate emotion lead to a lot of tears – Hardly the recipe for 6 rounds of public sparring! I knew I was making all of this happen but I felt helpless in making it stop.

Things started to change after the very first session. Knowing that Hazel had first hand experience of the pressure I was putting myself under helped a lot, but empathy was by no means essential. Hazel has a way of just knowing how things make you feel and is able to explain why you react in the ways that you do - but more importantly, she provides you with the tools to work through whatever it is that’s causing you issues.

I left that first session feeling like someone had let me in on a secret that only I knew about - it's hard to explain, but the changes, albeit small at first, were immediate. As the weeks went by and my event drew closer, things really started to change - The fear and self-doubt had gone and what replaced it was a confidence that I never knew I was capable of feeling, let alone believing.

I couldn’t have asked for a better mental state in the lead up to my grading; I had actually started to look forward to it and I was genuinely excited to have the opportunity to show what I was capable of. On the day itself, I was ready. I entered that dojo with a smile on my face, knowing that I was worthy enough to have earned the right to be there. It was by far one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but I loved every second of it.

I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Hazel to anyone struggling to move forwards in life, whether it’s with self-limiting beliefs or a behaviour that you simply can’t explain. Hypnotherapy got me to a place that I couldn’t reach on my own and it helped me achieve a goal that I never let myself believe was possible. Give it a go – you have nothing to lose apart from whatever it is that’s holding you back!
