About Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (Hq Arrc)

Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (HQ ARRC) is a High Readiness NATO Headquarters based in Gloucester, United Kingdom. Formed in 1992, HQ ARRC is a highly capable mutlinational headquarters designed for rapid worldwide deployment.

Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (Hq Arrc) Description

Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (HQ ARRC) provides NATO with a well-manned, rapidly deployable, flexible HQ that can act as a Joint, Land or Corps HQ for operations and crisis response. Its European, multi-national ethos, combination of cultures and innovation, strong professional reputation in NATO and proven track record in interoperability are unique among its High Readiness Force (Land) (HRF(L)) peers.

2017 marked the 25th anniversary as HQ ARRC and 200th Anniversary of its antecedent, 1 Corps. Throughout its history the Corps has played a key role in international events. It began its journey fighting under Wellington at Waterloo. In the First World War it fought in France and Belgium, and in the Second World War it was responsible for two of the D-Day beachheads and a number of airborne assaults, as part of the Allied re-entry into Europe. Throughout the Cold War 1 (BR) Corps was the UK’s contribution to NATO’s defence against the Soviet Union.

With the end of the Cold War, HQ ARRC emerged as the first NATO Rapid Reaction Land Force Headquarters. Such was the success of the structure developed by ARRC, in 2002 it was used as the model for the development of other HRF(L) Headquarters. From 1994 until 2010, the ARRC was based in Rheindahlen, Germany. In 2010 the ARRC moved to its current location at, Imjin Barracks, Gloucester.

In line with its operational ethos, ARRC commanded the Land element of NATO's first ever deployment as part of the Implementation Force (IFOR) operation in Bosnia in 1995. It deployed again as the headquarters commanding Land Forces during the Kosovo War in 1999. Other operations have included the formation of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan in 2006 and as ISAF Joint Command in 2011.

Today, the ARRC is the UK’s largest deployable Land HQ. It remains the UK’s contribution to NATO’s HRF(L) structure and is unique amongst all other HRF(L)s by falling under the direct Operational Command of Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (SACEUR) during peacetime.

Although HQ ARRC’s ‘framework nation’ is the United Kingdom, comprising approximately sixty percent of the overall staff, the ARRC is fully multinational in nature and organisation, with twenty-one NATO and Partner Nations overall contributing personnel. A number of other nations will become part of the ARRC before the end of 2017.

Welcome to Gloucestershire, Señor!
The Allied Rapid Reaction Corps welcomes the most senior Spanish officer to join the NATO headquarters at its base in Innsworth, near Gloucester.
Brigadier-General Carlos Salgado Romero of the Spanish Army (Ejército de Tierra) comes to HQ ARRC as the Commander of ‘Enabling Command’, with responsibility on the battlefield for the movement of Corps troops and materiel – and says he is “raring to go!”
... The General has over 36 years of experience with the Spanish land forces, and has previously deployed with NATO to Kosovo and Afghanistan.
Usted es muy bienvenido, mi General.

Troops serving with Headquarters Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (HQ ARRC) have completed an arduous mountaineering expedition in the area of one of the bloodiest battlefields of the First World War.
NATO staff from the United States, United Kingdom and Italy participated in the trek on the Isonzo Front in present-day Slovenia – where a series of fierce battles were fought between the Austro-Hungarian and Italian armies from 1915 to 1917.
The team climbed a number of ‘via ferrata’ (Iron Paths), used during the First World War as routes across the Alps, as well as ascending Mount Prisank with its summit at 2,547 metres above sea level.

Ahoy! Twenty-four members of HQ ARRC recently completed Exercise ARRCADE Sail 2018, a week-long Adventure Training programme centred on the use of sailing vessels as well as the teamwork and technical expertise required to employ them. Departing from Gosport, personnel spent approximately eight hours a day at sea training before making port calls at Cowes, Poole, Lymington and Southampton.
HQ ARRC maintains a robust Adventure Training programme and is a major perk of being assigned to our multinational formation.

Recently, our medical branch conducted Exercise ARRCADE AESCALPIUS, a tactical medical wargame designed to explore what the corps' medical concept for supporting warfighting should be, and how the corps can work most effectively in support of subordinate formations.
The exercise was attended by medical and non-medical personnel from across the #NATO force structure and national headquarters units including UK HQ Surgeon General, commander of the UK Maritime Forces, HQ UK Field Army, HQ 1st Canadian Division, 1st German-Netherlands Corps, Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, and the RAF Tactical Medical Wing among several others.
