About Helen Browning'S Royal Oak

Excellent local real ales; sometimes world class food almost always good food. We like to provide good service informally. We are slightly scruffy.

Helen Browning'S Royal Oak Description

Walking, eating, drinking, sleeping, talking--five human fundamentals that we try to provide for at our eccentric pub in the middle of the farm in Bishopstone. We like to provide good service, informally. We are slightly scruffy – The Times called us ‘ramshackle’ in the same article that nominated us as their food editor’s second favourite place to eat in the UK, in June 2015. We have decided not to sue the Murdoch empire over this perceived slight. The gently satirical magazine The Oldie described us as a ‘bullshit free zone’ in a deserted countryside, also June 2015. They loved the food, the beer and the welcome. Actually, we’re happy with both descriptions.

Helen Browning's Organic will be exhibiting at the Go Organic Festival. A fantastic weekend of fab organic food & drink, live music, celebrities, lifestyle, health and entertainment for the whole family.
Do come and say hello and of course sample our delicious hot dogs at our stand in the Marketplace. Then go and treat yourself to the real deal at the Flying Pig in the Street Food & Drink area.

Just seen Royal Oak ghost for about fifth time in 11 years. Male benevolent dark coated, always loitering round back door and loo doors. A bit like me, possibly tf

Mrs Messy Bed. One of the bad girls in Helen’s new book. Come and meet her on September 22, when we have a day of books, pigs beer and food. The correct cultural mix, we think. Tf

Helen Browning's Royal Oak is happy to be supporting Wantage Literary Festival this year and not just because we might know one of the speakers quite well.
The Festival is a collection of events covering literature, poetry, comedy, history, science, the arts and much more.
And, it just so happens that you will be able to catch Helen there, talking about her new book ('Pig’, out soon), gastro food and the organic movement on Friday 26 October.
... You can pick up a Festival brochure in the pub or, brochures and tickets are now available in the pub and at the Madhatter bookshop, Vale & Downland Museum and online www.wantageliteraryfestival.co.uk.

A fabulous warm summer’s evening for a birthday party at the Royal Oak!
Thanks to Bridget and family for holding their party. They creatively transformed our marquee into a colourful, sparkling, dance venue and looked amazingly glamorous in posh frocks and suits.
Pimms & bubbles, Paul, the head chef’s, now infamous spicy Cajun avocado nibbles, delish BBQ, beautiful cake, great music from Breeze, brilliant guests who boogied into the night in the setting of our beautiful gar...dens in the pinky hue of last night’s stunning sunset.
Thanks everyone!

In a frosty field on the longest night of the year, eight little piglets snuffle their first breaths, and jostle close to their mother to feed...
So begins the life of the farm animal that you think you already know. But think again... Helen & Tim's fabulous new book now available for pre-order!

Anybody out there able to wire up the Royal Oak tv in time for tonight’s World Cup screening? I’m not v good with cables...

Pig racing conundrum. Money on the hapless lazy oinkment or the sprightly but grubby ‘one Pig went to mow’ (dreadful name) —come on serena our pudding pixie, tell us which one! Pig racing Sunday from noon

User

Pig racing this Sunday, 3 June.
Weather conditions are looking favourable to watch some highly-trained pigs slowly racing down Cues Lane.
BBQ starts at midday with pig racing from 2ish (Royal Oak time) and live music from The Tin Shack Band at 4ish. Garden is looking glorious - come eat drink and have fun....

With just over two days to go the tension is mounting for the 7th International Pig Racing Festival.
Weather conditions are looking favourable. The 3-day desert training will undoubtedly pay off.
This year’s contenders at a glance, in no particular order -
... 1. Oinkment - good at lying down, may make it to the starting line if it leaves now 2. Gunter - better suited to rolling in mud than winning high-stake races 3. The Carlinger - back for more, way overweight from a diet of G&Ts and Carling and a little wobbly on its feet - may surprise yet 4. Cues Lane Flyer - a direct offspring of Westland Wonder who stormed home to win three races in 1774 after being stung by a wasp - within it to win it 5. Perky - over-trained and over-fed on bananas and raw eggs but still a real flyer 6. Albert Einswine - this rank no-hoper has been trained on Arkell’s Mustang stout, so plenty of wind expected 7. One pig went to mow - mostly seen skulking at the back of the paddock and hasn’t shown much interest in moving let alone running 8. Princess Megham - the people’s favourite looks set to lead the field a merry dance, definitely one to watch

We've stayed twice at the Royal Oak since they opened their new rooms & had the most wonderful stay. Love its laid back & welcoming atmosphere. It's a 'make yourself at home' kind of place; which is what we were looking for. The rooms are uniquely trendy, but very cosy.....not your run-of-the-mill chintz that you get with a lot of uk gastro pubs. Just muck in & enjoy yourselves!! Oh & the food is amazing!!!!

User

We stayed at The Royal Oak last Saturday, whilst walking a stage of The Ridgway. Loved the place! Good food, wine and service. Would highly recommend.

User

We had a brilliant stay. Top quality breakfast and personalized service was really tip-top. We will be back!

User

We booked the upstairs function room for my husband's 50th - combined with the Argentinian BBQ, just off the decked terrace. The food was excellent, the staff attentive and accommodating, the venue superb. We stayed over in a beautiful room and had a fabulous breakfast. I highly recommend the Royal Oak and it's accommodation.

User

Visited the gorgeous pub on Saturday for lunch with my dad. The food was amazing, I don’t normally have burgers but my cousin Ali recommended them from here and it truly lived up to what he’d said 👍

We all went for a lovely walk around Bishopstone after to see the house my dad grew up in and the farm him and my uncle Pete worked on! Great day :)

User

The service was fantastic, and the food was superb, local beers on tap and cocktails to kill for what more could you want on a night out. Great place great setting well worth the winding lanes to get there

User

Sunday Lunch brilliant we will return Nice long walk 1st then lunch we will bring Archie our chocolate lab :)

User

Such warm and welcoming hospitality! Stayed for only one night and would have happily stayed for more, the staff couldn't do enough to make us feel welcome and our room was so cosy and spacious (downs east). The best part was the food! Delicious dinner and an even more delicious organic breakfast - best sausages and bacon I've had in a long time. Thank you Helen Brownings for a memorable stay :-)

User

Relaxed atmosfere in a charming hotel immersed in a beautiful landscape. The service is extremely good, as people are very nice, and the dinner at the pub is just amazing - I fell in love with the Alentejana and the Pork Belly they serve here! The place to be to enjoy the nature and the sun!

User

Had one night here and loved it!! The rooms are lovely, very clean, well presented, comfortable, and individual. The bathroom was really good, we had a room with a roll top bath (Cuckoo Pen). Be aware though that some of the rooms have a partially open bathroom, which was fine for us as a couple. The staff were really friendly, and very helpful. They couldn't do enough for us! I have quite a restricted diet (vegetarian and gluten free), and can struggle to find something on a menu. Here though, the chef cooked something especially for me, and it was gorgeous. Even my meat eating partner enjoyed it!!! The food was fresh, organic, straight from the farm of the owners. We couldn't fault the accommodation, the staff, the food, or the pub. We would highly recommend it :)

User

From the fabulous food to the accommodation and the tour of the farm, we loved every minute of our stay. The staff were amazing, especially Tim and Tish. Can’t wait to come back.

User

Fab, spent one night and we loved the decor and layout of the room, breakfast was great and staff very friendly

User

Fab food, excellent service and ambiance. Quirky would be a good description but if you’re passing make a detour, you really won’t be disappointed!

User

Excellent , just the best and a great place to stay. The staff take customer service to an epic level , we will be back - the wallow was the icing on the cake . Thanks folks

User

Best BLT I’ve ever had! Can highly recommend.

User

Amazing food, relaxed and warm atmosphere. Booked to go back for my birthday in 2 weeks time. Recommend you try it. Chop Shop in swindon old town is fab too

User

quirky, good food and beer, tour of the pig farm a must!

User

We spent three nights at the Royal Oak instead of our usual chain hotel in Swindon. We had chosen a small room which suited our needs. There is a large range of breakfast options which set us up for the day. We had Sunday lunch in the restaurant with family. There was a good choice of meals and our grandchildren were found suitable meals off the menu. Portion size was realistic not massive as served in a lot of restaurants these days.

All the staff we came in contact with were helpful and friendly.

User

Gorgeous place would rather have sat downstairs in honesty much more ambient. Very light upstairs and acoustics not Great. Starter was gorgeous but far too large - I had fillet steak to follow but disappointing cut of meat. Pretty blandand the chargrill was too char!! however we will definitely return as service was brilliant and we always give new places a decent go before not returning
