Helmsley Castle Description

With 900 years of history to discover, a visit to Helmsley Castle is the perfect activity for a fantastic day out!

Set on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Rye within the picturesque town of Helmsley, the imposing remains of Helmsley Castle still dominate the town’s skyline. Learn about the various colourful characters who lived at the castle – with links to the Magna Carta, the Knights Templar, the Civil War and even a nursery rhyme there is certainly a good story or two to explore. Visit our exhibition and unearth the vast history of the castle through an intriguing collection of archaeological artefacts. Or simply immerse yourself in the peaceful atmosphere of a castle which has stood a magnificent test of time; from being partially destroyed during the Civil War to its later (more unusual) uses as a quarry, tennis court and a chicken run!

Whether you’re entertaining a family of knights, princesses and dragons or looking for a picnic with a difference there is something for everyone at Helmsley Castle.
