About Help Me Save The Ocean

In December 2018 I'm volunteering on a research boat to monitor and support the re-population of endangered species near Cocos Island, Costa Rica.

Great meeting today with @treasurebeachturtlegroup and JET (Jamaica Enviroment Trust). Treasure Beach is shortlisted to participate in the programme 'Cleaner Beaches for Jamaicans' πŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ Lots of work to do, but with a bit of community team work we will be on a good track soon! Help Me Save The Ocean will be there every step of the way. πŸ’™πŸ’πŸπŸ–β›±πŸŒŠπŸ’š

***Warning: long post ahead***
I NEED YOUR FEEDBACK! 😊
We are in Jamaica, in the south coast, and a little association is taking care of surveying and protecting Hawkbills in the area. They are all local volunteers and struggling to find enough spare time to patrol the beaches consistently. The season goes from June to November and we are putting together a volunteering programme for students (and non-students) that includes half board and accommodation in this lovely fisherm...en area.
There is a lot to do, as we have just received permission to tag turtles, but not to build a hatchery yet, and there are so many activities in the pipelines, like creating a common area next to the local natural history museum, create awareness in the schools, launch responsible tours for tourists, etc. We could really do with some extra time and energy!
It would cost $2,000 for a half season (3 months) and there are over 10 places available to start at all time - do you know of any university that might be interested in sponsoring this programme and send a couple of students per season? Do you think students themselves might be happy to join a start up project and see it building up through their very work?
Any comment and suggestion would be much appreciated.
HAPPY SEA TURTLE WEEK EVERYONE!

Fisherman's beach in south Jamaica. Less than 100 meters, tons of abandoned nets. This Ocean of ours is hopelessly neglected πŸ’”

First visit to Billy Bay's Turtle Nesting Beach and Natural History Museum. Great people in a little corner of paradise... so much to do to make this a protected area, but Jamaica needs this so much! Stay tuned πŸ’™

Thank you all for taking part last Summer to our fund-raising in support of TIRN's research expedition to Cocos Island, Costa Rica. Your help contributed towards the study of behaviour and migratory habits of different kind of sharks, turtles and rays. Amongst the many incredible achievements is the tagging of Lagherta/Victoria, Cocos' killer tiger shark!
I am unbelievably proud to say that I was there (although on the surface on that precise occasion πŸ˜†) and very grateful to ...all our backers for putting me on that boat! πŸŒŠπŸ’™πŸ§œβ€β™€οΈ

Lucky suggested a good shuttle to reach El Salvador; it was cheap, comfortable and managed to pick me up at the right time from the right location - I was impressed! There were only a few travellers on the minibus and 3 crew members (or maybe one was only a friend), nice music on and plenty of space to relax, so I relaxed. I wanted to reach Concepción de Ataco, a little pueblo on the Ruta de las Flores, but I could only find a ride up to a gasolinera on the way to the wild su...rfing coast. From there I needed to catch a bus to Somsonate where the Ruta would start. I was confident, but also aware that I was going to El Salvador, which everyone paints as a dangerous place. Regardless, I always wonder how much truth is ever in these rumours. The plan was to take pictures of the pretty murales, to find some nice cafè with WiFi and work a while and also to enjoy the weekend gastronomic fairs on the Ruta; so I did! Ataco was covered in street art; bright colours and beautiful styles were everywhere to describe historical moments as well as shops and restaurants. The pueblito was tiny and felt very safe: rumours 0 - Anna 1. Unfortunately the WiFi was dramatically slow and a simple act like copying and pasting a screenshot would turn up to be very frustrating...I worked for a day and a half and then I gave up and turned to the foodie galore that was all around. Both in Ataco and in Juayua, another pueblo on the Ruta, food stalls would fill up the main square offering delicious barbequed feast, from shrimps to ribs and chorizo, cutlets and steaks, all accompanied with fresh veg, guacamole, rice, beans and tortillas. I stuffed myself and still managed to feed all the stray local dogs, which by the way eats EVERYTHING, including bones and shells (just like our spoiled ones). #centroamerica #HelpMeSavetheOcean #sabbatical #elsalvador #rutadelasflores #ataco #juayua #travellingthroughtheworld #travelblogger #traveldiaries #instatravel #instafood #food #barbeque #foodie @ Ruta de las Flores

We reached Lanquin, the last village our van could cope with, and to compensate my McDonal's withdraw I had a delicious falafel wrap (go figure!) while waiting for my hostel pick up. The last leg of my day long journey was about to be the weirdest. Dayson, aged 24, drove up and down impossible rocks and holes (that was not a road), while hitting on me and trying to learn Italian; the guy could multitask! He also told me that back at the hostal 'El Portal', a beautiful bunch o...f cabaΓ±as grouped around a terraced bar/restaurant right on top of a cobalt river, there was no power; a little price to pay for being 50 metres from the park entrance! Only at certain hours their generator would guarantee light and a chance to recharge phones. The same identical warning and instruction was given at reception on arrival by another flirting little boy, too bad these rules were never followed by the letter, creating a fun game to play trying to get enough charge for my mobile. El Portal not only had no power, it also had no connection, actually the whole area had no connection, I didn't even manage to send a text in the 70 hours I spent there... it was a black hole! But what a paradise it was. Lush vegetation was all around with lizards, butterflies and at night, with patience and a bit of luck, little micoleons in the trees. I spent the day after my nocturnal arrival at the reserve of Samuc Champey, local Mayan for 'where the water hides among the rocks'. Here a short walk takes you to an unimaginable layered waterfall, impressive not for its jumps, but for its stretch. Over 7 pozas (pools) linking with each other, all easy to access and all of a colour that cannot be described; probably the best natural waterpark I have ever seen (a tie with Ocho Rios waterfall maybe, in Jamaica). Further up, but not of easy access, was the little canyon which gave the park it's name and at the top of a never ending staircase was el mirador from which the eye could take in the whole beauty of the waterfall. #centroamerica #guatemala #semucchampey #lanquin #elportal #hostellife #hostels #HelpMeSavetheOcean #sabbatical #travellingthroughtheworld #travellblogger #traveldiaries #instatravel @ Semuc Champey

ANTIGUA WITHOUT FILTERS La Antigua Guatemala appeared to me in a crepuscolar light, kissed by the sunset and caresses by a gentle breeze. We went back and forth the cobbled stones to drop down all passengers, one by one, until there was only me and the driver. My address was at the far corner of town, in a Cartesian system based on 9 calles (running East to West) and 9 avenidas (running North to South) my coordinates would be 0;1...that's where Colonia Candelaria sits, in fr...ont of a beautiful ruin and at the feet of Cerro de la Cruz. And here was where DoΓ±a Lucky lived and where she was about to host me for one week. When I knocked at the door she let me in with that lovely fuss all gentle and reserved people make, she showed me my room on the upper floor right on their wide terrace, the bathroom I was to share with the other guest, and she told me at what time were served the three meals she was going to offer me for the following 7 days. My room looked like my childhood room, with a big, low desk surrounded by many shelves, swivels chair and a wardrobe!! First one since I started this wonderful journey. The bed was comfy, and I instantly felt at home. Oh how beautiful you are my dear Antigua! Charming and familiar like the Appia Antica in Rome with your villas and ruins, exotic and joyous like Trinidad in Cuba, one of my dearest town in the whole world. A triumph of colonial architecture and cultural vibes surrounded by three volcanoes and absolute blue sky. Morning came and I was ready to wonder around with Daniela and listen to all her stories. We started with the Cerro de la Cruz a high up belvedere terrace with a massive cross visible from everywhere in town. I am not gonna lie, the climbing way up was painful, especially when passed by joggers (!), but the view, oh my what a view! While looking at Antigua as if it was a model of itself, Daniela explained the different areas and the itinery we were about to take. #HelpMeSavetheOcean #sabbatical #centroamerica #guatemala #antigua #niΓ±osdeguatemala #spanishschool #travellingthroughtheworld #travelbloggers #traveldiaries #travelpictures #instatravel #cobblestone #churches #colonialstyle #besttown #home @ Antigua Guatemala, Sacatepequez

At Pana I had plenty of time to have breakfast before the bus would come and get me. It was Sunday and I thought I would break my journey to Antigua to stop in Chichicastenango for its super popular market - I actually saved all my shopping for this occasion! We had a 4 hours stop before continuing on to Antigua, and man, it was worth it!!
A burst of colours and a cloud of smells hit me as soon as I turned into the first market alley. Busy like an ant nest, dozens of vendors ...and buyers twirled in a destructured dance before my eyes. Plenty of oversized crates latched on people's forehead were pushing thorough impossible two-way passages. A bunch of foreigners seasoned the scene and tossed the flow with their random lost movements...and there it was - the 'church in every pictures' with its steps all crowded and covered in flowers. I passed a few times in front of it afterwards to find it all smoking with incense. And then the souvenirs, or artisania if you wish. Difficult to know what was made by who...
I fairly easily found what I was looking for wondering around all corners, so I could relax then and enjoy the more authentic grocery and food area. Once again colours and smells hit my senses, but they were different. Sacks of nuts, grains, dry fish and chillies surrounded me, only interrupted by piles of pots and clusters of benches; it was lunch time and locals were eating. Then out of nowhere another church, smaller and less photographed, towered over the stalls. A blinding splash of white against the bluest sky. #chichicastenango #guatemala #centroamerica #HelpMeSavetheOcean #sabbatical #market #streetmarket #artisania #food #streetfood #churches #colours #travellingthroughtheworld #travelbloggers #traveldiaries #instafood #instatravel #instapicture #instamarket #bestmarket @ Chichicastenango
