Regular followers of HZG's FB page may be aware that young Alfie, a red kangaroo, was abandoned by his mother well over a year ago. Mim became his foster mother, which is a particularly difficult task with kangaroos outside of Australia. Alfie has grown into a strong, confident roo and was successfully reintegrated into the mob last year. However, he still hasn't forgotten his foster mum and happily shared a banana with her today.
HZG is extremely proud of their herd of zebras. Today they received their vaccinations by voluntarily walking to their stations to be seen by their vet. Here they receive a treat for any number of important jobs from grooming and foot care to medical work.
HZG's Level 1 Introduction to Animal Training course is the perfect opportunity for individuals with no prior experience in animal handling or training. Please contact Jo Mason directly if you are interested in booking a place on the below email address jo@educatinganimals.co.uk
HZG opened the doors of their new conference and education centre to the Bartlett Society - a respected group dedicated to studying the history of zoos and animal husbandry through the ages http://www.zoohistory.co.uk/ This is the first time the Bartlett Society has visited HZG in 15 years.
HZG welcomed their guests with their student presentation, which includes live training demonstrations that included eagle owl, lemurs, rhesus macaques, raven, zebras, black leopard, tige...rs and lions. The visit also included penguin feeding, enrichment participation for the lemurs, rhesus macaques and tigers. The guests also had an opportunity to get up close with HZG's Bactrian and Dromedary Camels, pygmy hedgehogs, squirrel monkeys and various reptiles.
HZG recevied fantastic feedback from the Bartlett members. HZG's staff felt privileged to hear from the fascinating accounts of these very knowledgeable and well travelled individuals who visit zoos the world over. One member was still on target to visit one zoo a week this year!
