Did you know more than 80 million people suffer from chronic halitosis, or bad breath? It is also one the most common complaints from patients ‘I brush twice a day but my breath still smells’, ‘I find myself covering my mouth when I speak to people’, ‘people are always offering me chewing gum’.
Bad breath can be very embarrassing, and without the right advice it can be hard to get rid of. But worry not! The staff at Highfield Clinic has collated a few of their own tips to hel...p you beat the breath.
1 This is the obvious one but brushing your teeth AT LEAST twice a day for 2-3 minutes removes left over foods, plaque and debris from your teeth and gums. Not brushing at night is a big no no as all the debris feeds off enzymes in your mouth, during these chemical reactions the by-product is the smell that you feel in the morning.
2. Along with brushing cleaning interdentally with floss or interdental sticks is a must! This reaches places your brush can’t clearing out the pesky bits of debris that wedge between the teeth and in the gum margins.
3. Drink plenty of water! This will stop your mouth from getting dry and also wash away food and bacteria. Some people suffer dry mouths from medications they take so maybe visit the GP and ask for a saliva substitute if you think this is you.
4. Brush your tongue. Human anatomy is a weird thing. We all have different tongues, shape, size, grooves. Food can sit in these grooves and build up as can bacteria so brush or scrap your tongue as part of your oral health routine.
5. Quit smoking. Smoking can lead to your mouth being dryer. The fumes saturate your blood vessels and cause natural reactions to reduce because of lack of O2 in the blood. And let’s be honest it doesn’t smell great and if you are a smoker it can lead to further problems like gum disease.
6. Use a mouth rinse. Ok so this one is a tricky one. It will only mask the smell of halitosis and if used incorrectly it can worsen the smell. But used correctly as part of a good oral health routine and you will feel the difference.
7. Snack on fresh vegetables and fruit. These get your saliva flowing that can wash away bacteria built up during meals. This brings us on to the next point.
8. Don’t skip meals. An empty stomach from skipping meals can cause bad breath as acids in the stomach build up.
9. And finally the most obvious one… Visit your dentist. If you have bad breath, your dentist will be able, to rule out any dental problems. Your dentist can rule out any infections or other factors that may be contributing to your problems.
