A history of excellence
Hill Dickinson’s journey began back in 1810, with the opening of a Liverpool legal practice by the firm’s founder, Edward Morrall. The practice quickly established itself as a leading maritime law firm, at a time when Liverpool was widely regarded as the second port of the British Empire.
Over the decades, the firm has continued to distinguish itself and has been involved in many famous cases during its two centuries of continuous legal practice. The most famous of these were the sinking of the Titanic and the sinking of the Lusitania.
The firm’s identity as ‘Hill Dickinson’ began to emerge in 1865, when John Edward Gray Hill joined the partnership. John Dickinson joined the firm in 1874, but it wasn’t until 1910 that the firm became ‘Hill Dickinson & Company. ’ The most recent change of name to ‘Hill Dickinson LLP’ took place in 2005.
Building on strong foundations
To become the leading national and international firm it is today, Hill Dickinson has gone through a series of mergers and acquisitions. This includes the acquisition of London-based commodities practice, Middleton Potts, on 1 July 2009. This was a strategic acquisition for Hill Dickinson to boost its presence in the commodities sector and add further weight to its global reputation for shipping and transport work. Most recently, in July 2010, the firm acquired the Liverpool and Sheffield offices of Halliwells.
Firm future
From its beginnings in maritime law, the firm has grown to incorporate and be recognised for its expertise in seven practice areas: insurance; company and commercial; marine; employment and pensions; healthcare; property and construction; and professional risks.
We now have more than 190 partners and 1, 300 people operating from offices in Liverpool, Manchester, London, Chester, Sheffield, Piraeus (Athens) and Singapore.
2010 marked Hill Dickinson's 200th anniversary, with celebrations of the firm's historical pedigree, current achievements and future aspirations. In the same year the firm was National law firm of the year at the Legal Business Awards 2010.
Hill Dickinson continues to expand and evolve, ensuring it has the global reach and breadth of expertise that clients expect of a forward-thinking law firm.

Following serious allegations made against an individual who was due to join the firm in September 2019, we have now spoken to the individual and revoked his offer of employment. We are deeply disturbed by the messages that were brought to our attention last night and would like to stress that the views expressed by the individual and others involved in this matter do not in any way represent the views of the firm and we absolutely do not condone this behaviour.
We have received a number of enquiries via our website and social media this evening with regards to serious allegations that have been brought to our attention involving a future employee of the firm. We are looking into this as a matter of urgency and will be conducting a full investigation into these allegations. We will not be commenting any further until the investigation has concluded.

What better evidence of a sound moral and ethical code than to swiftly revoke the offer of employment to the student involved in such a shameful incident? Im very impressed by this, thank you!
Trying to balance out the swarm of negative reviews over someone who was never formally employed at the firm. There is no reliable way of knowing someone holds those views during a recruitment process and when they discovered such, they dealt with it swiftly.
To the external visitors: The rating does not reflect the work done by the firm. It is due to the external incident that has been succesfully and professionaly resolved.
Swift action done, you’ve set a good example and precedent to follow!
Quick action to drop the racist Exeter student, very unfair on the firm to receive bad publicity on the back of this given they had no clue about the views that guy had. Hope it doesn't blight the company too badly.
I’m really impressed to see the quick and decisive action that this firm took against a violent racist. It shows good leadership, judgment and moral consistency. I’m so happy to see them taking a stand.

It would be a serious disgrace to this firm's image and standing if immediate action is not taken to punish the racist comments made by one its trainees, Matt Bell. Actions have consequences and if this firm has any shred of dignity and integrity it will act quickly and let go of Matt Bell.
Another star performance today at HD Liverpool by Bill Chandler and Ralph Bullivant in the latest Property Update presentation. ....Very welcoming staff too.
