A great exhibition at the Bluecoat Gallery by artist Jonathan Baldock. Facecrime features a surreal landscape of ceramic towers and masks adorned with human features. Sadly we cant visit at the moment, but the Bluecoat have just released this excellent video from the opening night, with an artist interview and tour.

This week, the final-year BA History of Art and Museum Studies students at LJMU are giving their symposium presentations. The students have designed all aspects of the symposium, from the individual researched presentation that each person is offering, to the brochure that records the proceedings.
This year, the students have decided to call the symposium 'Delve' and the event is split into four panels. Panel 1 discusses why and how art has been systematised according to ...Western ideals to create hierarchical divisions between artistic genres; Panel 2 presents a thorough examination of feminist narratives, delving into the underlying contextual references and re-frames existing male-centric models through theory and practice; the third explores the inherent impulse to search, hunt and yearn for meaning amongst a plethora of meanings that could be found within colour and music; the final session excavates information on uncharted topics such as video games, neurology in art, clowns and clowning and folk horror, offering new perspectives.
These four sessions enable each person to explore - or to 'delve' - into a subject of personal interest and to research it in more detail.
The staff congratulate the students on all their hard work on this impressive event during the whole semester. LJMU Art & Design Academy LJMU #HistoryofArt

Congratulations to final-year BA Hons History of Art and Museum Studies student, Lydia George! Lydia has created all of the art work and curated an exhibition that is currently on at The Rathbone Studio, on Argyle Street, Birkenhead. Lydia has been working here with the gallery owner, Janet Holmes, as part of our Internship module and learning to create ceramics and run art workshops.
The exhibition is called 'Utopia: The Process' and involves painted, ceramic, fabric and ...'detourned' art work by Lydia on the topic of Utopia being made and curated. It is very thought-provoking and is also displayed in a most interesting way. The viewer is encouraged to think about issues such as the perfect home, protection and innovative architecture. It is amazing that Lydia has the ability to make beautiful objects by herself in so many different media.
Lydia has also received great public press for her exhibition on the Arts City Liverpool website: https://www.artscityliverpool.com/…/A-s lice-of-Utopia-comes…
The exhibition is still open to visitors despite the current difficult global situation! The staff and students on the History of Art and Museum Studies course congratulate Lydia. Thank you too to Janet and The Rathbone Studio! @LJMUarts #HistoryofArt @LJMU @RathboneStudio #bahistoryofartmuseumstudies

Last week, the first-year BA History of Art & Museum Studies students were treated to gallery visits and an overnight stay in Blackpool's 'Art B&B'! This was part of the 'Collaboration with Contemporary Art' module on which students learn about the most contemporary applications of art. The 'Art B&B' in Blackpool is an example of this, in that people experience art whilst they are staying in the B&B.
As well as this, the students were introduced to Garth Gratrix, who cond...ucted a tour at The Grundy Art Gallery, and he also led discussions and tours around Abingdon Studios. Garth most generously spent a lot of time with the students and their tutors, Gabriela and James, talking about his work, the gallery/studios, his exhibition at the Grundy, and the practicalities and realities of being an artist in the town.
We think that this visit was a lot fun, a nice relax away from normal life and highly educational!

Final year student Melanie Lamb has been working with student recruitment for several months to organise an LJMU outreach event with local schools. Two schools came to Tate Liverpool today to hear talks by Dr Onyeka Nubia from the University of Nottingham and Dr Juliet Carroll from History of Art at LJMU, followed by a visit to the amazing Theaster Gates exhibition at Tate Liverpool. This event was part of our engagement with Black History Month. @LJMUarts #HistoryofArt Tate @Tateliverpool @LJMU

Congratulations to final-year BA History of Art and Museum Studies students, Emily Archer, Lauren Clynch and Caitlin Whittle, who held a joint exhibition this evening at the John Lennon Building.
Their exhibition enabled them to exercise their creativity as well as practice being art historians by doing the curation. Emily included hand-made drawings, Lauren created hand-made paper and Caitlin displayed her own photography. Of course, there was much more to everything than t...hat, but this gives readers an idea of what to expect if they visit tomorrow.
The exhibition was very well attended and there was a real buzz in the air! This is an assessed project that is part of the final semester suite of modules that includes the dissertation and a presentation at Tate Liverpool. There is much to look forward to!

This week, Emma Roberts, the course leader of BA History of Art and Museum Studies at LJMU visited St. Dominic's Sixth Form College at Harrow-on-the-Hill. Three students have joined our degree course from this school and so we have now formed a strong relationship.
Emma talked for a short while about the course at LJMU and then did a workshop about four art works that the students at St. Dominic's were studying. The students had lots of interesting comments to make. It was so lovely to meet them and their teachers- especially Angela Inglese who had offered the kind invitation. St. Dominic's is clearly a wonderful school and it is fantastic to have the relationship with LJMU.

Last week, the first year LJMU BA History of Art and Museum Studies students visited FACT in Liverpool with their tutors, Gabriela and James. FACT is of course the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology.
The students met Lucia Arias and Jenny Watts from the Learning team and heard about the organisation's projects and programmes, and also got to experience one of the recent virtual reality artworks from it! They are creating blogs about their experiences on this Contemporary Art module and so they is bound to be full of interesting posts!

The first year BA History of Art and Museum Studies students from LJMU visited Convenience art space on the Wirral last Thursday! This was part of their 'Collaboration with Contemporary Art' module which ensures that they encounter the most contemporary spaces and art works. The group got to take a look around the gallery space during the installation period for the new show at Convenience, which is great experience for those who want to learn about curating and running a gallery. There is always something new and exciting on LJMU History of Art and Museum Studies! #HistoryofArt @LJMUarts @LJMU

Last Thursday, the first year LJMU BA History of Art & Museum Studies students had a full day trip to Leeds on the train with their tutors Gabriela and James. They had a busy day visiting a huge variety of contemporary art sites at the Henry Moore Institute, Leeds Art Gallery, East Street Arts, The Tetley and serf! At each venue they received introductions, tours and talks with staff and artists and so gained a really good understanding of the contemporary art scene in Leeds. Leonie Harding said, "It was very much a fun day!"

Many congratulations to Katie Toulson in the third year of BA History of Art and Museum Studies at LJMU. Katie opened an exhibition last night that she has curated at The John Lennon Building. This was a 'Digital Exhibition for Digital Art'. The art works- by Aria Hiraishi- were presented on computer monitors, which was appropriate for their medium and imagery.
The evening was celebratory with drinks and nibbles being provided for all too. Well done, Katie!

Recently, the LJMU BA History of Art and Museum Studies students visited venues that specialise in contemporary art on their 'Collaboration with Contemporary Art' module. Along with their tutors, James and Gabriela, they went to the exciting art spaces, CBS Gallery and The Royal Standard in Liverpool.
The first four images are all from CBS with Kevin Hunt giving a tour of the building. He showed how the studio also houses a picture framers to help make money from the space... and then an installation of his work that he'd set up for the group in the gallery space. After this he hosted a conversation and studio visit in his actual studio space.
The final photo is from the visit to The Royal Standard where everyone had an introduction to the organisation by two of the Co-Directors, Faye Hamblett-Jones and Benjamin Nuttall, in the communal area before going into the studio spaces themselves. It was a great day out in Liverpool exploring contemporary art!

Yesterday our third year History of Art students visited London as part of their research. We spent the afternoon in the British Library, firstly visiting the children's book exhibition, 'Marvellous and Mischievous', then a wonderful talk from the conservator for textiles, Liz Rose. Finally, curator Steven Cleary took us into the sound archive where we watched a digisation of Hitler's speeches in the 1920s and saw how the earliest recordings on a wax cylinder can be preserved. Marvellous indeed... @LJMUarts #HistoryofArt

This week, the first-year BA History of Art and Museum Studies students at Liverpool John Moores University undertook one of their more unusual assignments, which was also enjoyable. They were asked to create a poster presentation (a physical poster that condensed their research into a subject) and also to give a verbal presentation about this.
The posters were displayed in our building's main art gallery - the Exhibition Research Centre - and they looked spectacular en mass...e. An example of one is shown. It was interesting to hear the students' reasons for selecting their processes and also to discover in depth about their research routes. The posters enabled people to get involved in something creative and perhaps learn a new skill such as Photoshop or InDesign, which might come in very useful in the workplace.
Congratulations to the students on their work this semester!

Yesterday we had the LJMU BA History of Art and Museum Studies Christmas party! As well as having the usual festive food and drinks, we sang 'Happy Birthday' to one of our students, whose birthday it was, and we enjoyed watching the creative films that first-year students were asked to make as part of their assignments. They were certainly professional, imaginative and engaging!
We make sure on this course to provide our students with real-world skills and experiences that equip them for jobs following university. These films are just such an example and the process of making them develops many transferable skills. It is also lots of fun of course too!
Happy Christmas to all the students and staff on our course! 🎄 🤶 @LJMUarts LJMU Student Opportunities @LJMU @LJMUCareers #historyofart
