About History Of Epping In Photographs

My name is Phil Hudson, and along with a really good friend Wendy Clarke, we are researching the History of Epping, and creating a timeline of Epping High Street. We will post old photos that we find during our research.

I recently had the privilege to go inside The Centrepoint building and Junior School, something I’ve been trying to achieve for years! At first I was sad to see the building in such a state but then the memories came flooding back and I am grateful I got the opportunity to take some photos and be able to share. These are from Centrepoint unfortunately my camera flash stopped working typical! But I have been promised much better photos which I will share (Posted by Wendy Clarke)

Epping once had two wooden Market houses in the High Street, this one was pulled down in 1845. There was also a Buttercross which stood near the Police Station, how Buttercross Lane was named. Epping was famous for its butter and sausages of course and was mentioned by the poet Thomas Hood (Posted by Wendy Clarke)
Epping, for butter justly famed, And Pork in sausage popp’d;
... Where winter time, or summer time, A Pig’s flesh is always chopp’d
But famous more, as annals tell, Because of Easter Chase,
There ev’ry year ‘twixt dog and deer, There is a gallant race
Extract from ‘The Epping Hunt’ (1829)
