About Hive Beach Cafe

The Hive Beach Cafe has been voted the The Best Seafood Café for lots of reasons, on many occasions and by many different organisations too. Find out more about us on our website at: www. hivebeachcafe. co. uk

Hive Beach Cafe Description

Come and eat at our seafood café located on the Chesil Bank, at Hive Beach near Bridport in Dorset, offering some of the best views of Lyme bay. The café offers a vast range of local foods and fish. The fish counter is on view as soon as you walk into the café and our chefs are at hand to answer any questions regarding the fish on display.

During the summer months we offer a selection of shellfish, spider crabs off our own beach, brown crabs from Lyme Bay and when possible hand dived scallops, a must to have while sitting on Dorset’s beautiful World Heritage coast watching the sea and enjoying a bottle wine.

Inside you will find our cake counter filled with a selection of homemade cakes and locally made biscuits. Behind the counter on the walls the chalk menu tells you what’s on offer. It’s always best to be a bit early to get the best pick of the fish, ask at the counter if you have any special requirements, we will be pleased to help. The team of staff at the Hive will always welcome you with a smile and work hard to make your visit as pleasurable as possible.

The café extends its warm welcome to everyone; families, children and your dogs are welcome to come and join in the fun. We cater for the whole family so if you and your little ones have forgotten their bucket and spade or want a try at body boarding our cheerful staff will help you out, don’t forget the sunscreen!

Outside the main café area you will find our famed awnings and an extensive patio area making it accessible for wheelchair / pushchairs and just to make life a bit easier there’s around 140 chairs to choose from, inside and out. We extended the awning in late 2008 giving us more inside space for the winter months which has already proved invaluable over the busy Christmas period. Our famous awnings which caught the imagination of AA Gill when we were given 4 stars in the The Sunday Times Style magazine. Since then we have had many accolades in national magazines and newspapers.

What's a find. Had lunch with a friend she suggested it. We both had a the lobster and prawn salad. It was amazing.

Amazing setting just on the edge of the beach, less commercial than West Bay. That is usually better. But equally as good coast line. Could walk for miles.

Parking was easy as I'm a national trust member thr carpark was free.

We will be back..

User

We somehow by passed the queueing section with no issue. Service reasonable. Crab sandwiches excellent. Best I've had

Did have to wait when ready yo leave. You can't pay at the desk so had to wait for bill then pay and wait for change. Would have been longer but we had money ready and so she couldn't say no.

Billing queueing needs addressing. Saw lots of people in line when tables empty.

User

We had a great meal at a wonderful location and as it was bank holiday there was a 40 minute wait for lunch, however we were informed of this from the start and therefore were able to make a choice if we ate or not. We waited and the food was exceptional and the staff and service was fab. Will definitely be back.

User

Visited yesterday with friends & my dog, we got showed to a table straight away ,which was in a great position, we where asked by the waitress if we would like to order a drink & our food & that the food would be about an 1/2 hr wait , ordered our drinks & our food , it actually took less than 1/2 hr & the food was excellent & the staff apologise for the wait, but when the food is that good ,we really didn’t mind the , we will return ,Ps my dog loved the bone shaped dog biscuits, Thank you for such an enjoyable meal.

User

Setting perfect, we arrived for coffee and stayed for lunch, which was amazing. Service was very efficient and lunch was delivered in only a few minutes. They were very busy, every table was taken and people were queuing outside, but we never felt rushed. Would definitely go again.

User

Is obviously much better if the sun was like it was today it was truly incredible. The Crab and the fish is excellent very fresh and everything that came with it was well done including the sauces. Service was pretty good too, the young staff were helpful... one young lady forgot my wife's latte so she gave it to her for free in the end. I guess sometimes it's all about Right Time Right Place Right people. But everything worked out really well today.

User

I think I‚Äôve had the best Bank Holiday evs... thanks to the Hive Cafe! Fantastic service, fantastic happy staff and food to satisfy anyone who‚Äôs just completed a two hour walk and was with her husband saying ‚ÄėFancy a glass of Picpoul and some Lobster?‚Äô We didn‚Äôt wait long for a table and it was glorious! Thank you ÔŅĹ we are SO coming back!

User

Had a wonderful experience today. Was seated after a 3 minute wait overlooking the beach. Service was friendly, polite and courteous. The meal we had 3 courses was exceptional. All fish fresh and well cooked. It was a sunny day and they were very busy so service was slowish but it was such a great meal it was good to enjoy the wonderful views and chat. Well done guys we will be back.

User

A unique spot in a great location. Busy when we got there but the wait was only 5 minutes and the food and service were both good. Great place if you love fish!

User

This could be the best place in the world with its setting, however they have clearly become complacent with no competition

Service slow, although the food was good. The staff I believe have just stepped out of the 1970’s Faulty Towers. Too many people doing too little, a good shack up with customer service training is much in need

I don’t care if you have someone come and clean your toilets twice a day, when I go to the trouble of telling you that the sanitary disposal box in the toilet is overflowing I expect to be politely thanked and informed that it will be rectified immediately. Seriously with four staff milling around doing nothing surely one of them could grab a black sack and throw on a pair of gloves to ensure no more of your customers and their children witness used sanitary products in your toilets. These could easily of been handled by a small child, do I really need to highlight that they contain bodily fluids, blood???

With this attitude to the toilets I wonder what the standards of personal hygiene are. The staff are not trained on customer service so why would they have any grasp of personal or food hygiene. Do they also wait for someone to come and clean the kitchens????

Just think if this is an area we see what goes on elsewhere????

User

Service awful ÔŅĹ food good. The waiter I asked for a jug of water and received a paper coffee cup half full. I asked for another water to be told he was too busy. But had time to chat with his family/friends on the next table. In the end I did get a glass of water from the manager 25 minuets later. Sounds like I am making a fuss. But I have trouble eating and need fluids to help.

User

My husband and I visited yesterday. It was a little busy but not as busy as it has been in previous visits. My husband had the king prawns. He enjoyed them. The let down was the service. We stood waiting for ages to be seated. We were the only ones in the queue. There were numerous empty tables. We eventually sat ourselves, the tables were not cleared and when our food was brought over the waitress didn't clear our table either. She walked away empty handed! That is never the sign of good waitress /good service. When your paying £18 for a plate of king prawns the service should be there too! So as much as we like the location. We will bring our own food next time.

User

Lovely setting , just what you’d expect from a National Trust maintained area. If you want to use the cafe though be prepared to be snapped at by some of the staff (although the younger ones are lovely). It’s happened time three times out of four now and I wonder why I go there - really just to get my value from the NT. Used to be such a lovely place to eat but seems to be getting above itself now. Prefer Abbotsbury Colonial Cafe just along the road.

User

Hive vegetarian breakfast includes "free range egg" but you don't offer scrambled egg in the summer?

We were there at 10am so it wasn't very busy ,it wouldn't have taken the chef very long but the cashier insisted it wasn't an option ūüėē

We are regular customers so quite disappointed!

User

What has happened to this lovely cafe? We visited yesterday with friends and after waiting in line for ages we were finally shown to a table. There were so many staff walking about I couldn't understand why we had to wait so long for someone to take our order. I had to call someone over and ask to place an order. We then ordered cream teas and a cold drink only to be disappointed 5 minutes later that they had run out of scones...... the waitress then went off again returning to tell us they had 3 cheese scones and did we want them? Will not bother returning here again it seems like they are surviving on a past reputation.

User

Service really slow had to find the manager to obtain service and then once we ordered our summer salads and drinks, the food came but we had to then get up and chase the drinks, not good service and for the price, won‚Äôt be going there again I‚Äôm ūüė¶

User

Well what a disappointing visit to the Hive . We have been loyal customers of the Hive for over 15 years and yesterday our experience was awful.

We entered the cafe and went to find a table to be very rudely told to “go over there to que. “ ( we did not realise this) we then joined the que - there was no reason for this as the cafe was not busy or indeed full as there were many empty tables inside and out .

We eventually got shown to a table where we wanted to order a quick cup of tea and an ice cream for my little boy ( while I nursed my baby ) to be again abruptly told someone will come and take your order .

After about 10 minutes we decided to got to the counter to order as we didn’t understand what the wait was to be rudely told to sit at the table as a staff member will come . At this point my little boy burst into tears as all he wanted was to have an ice cream whilst I fed my baby! A number of staff later we finally had our order taken.

Then ...... our order took so long to arrive - that we had to leave as it was now 12.15 - we entered at 11.30! My little boy was so upset I brought an Icecream to go and we left .

I only popped in for a quick drink and feed my baby! How can it be so difficult for a cafe to bring a cup of tea and icecream? It wasn’t even busy - I dread to think what the summer is going to be like .

We are huge fans of the hive and love the watch house and visit frequently but today has really upset me. The way your staff spoke to me and my little boy and the time it took to get a table and get a cup of tea is madness.

What a disappointment.

User

We are in for breakfast, ordered just basic vegetarian sausage baps , along came 6 rolled up lumps of mash potatoes with a touch of veg with no flavour, highly disappointing given the vast selection of vegetarian sausages on the market, I’m not just another whining veggie, I literally eat anything and I mean anything, send me out a raw potato and a bit of pepper and I’d eat it ... what you sent to the table I couldn’t eat, unfortunate but it happened, will try again as all other food looks great but be warned .. stay away from the attempt at veggie sausages!!!!!!!!

User

I visited The Hive Cafe for lunch yesterday with my Aunt, to celebrate her birthday. We both ordered King Prawn Salad with a side portion of chunky chips, all delicious. Service was fantastic, Harry and his team came up trumps. We will be visiting again soon. Thank you for making lunch a very special occasion.
