Hms Calliope Description

In our spectacular riverside location, right next to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, HMS Calliope is the principal Royal Naval Reserve training unit for the North East of England, and home base for some 100 naval reservists. The unit has enjoyed a long association with Tyneside. We recruit right across the North East of England - from the Scottish Borders to the River Tees.
The unit has enjoyed a long association with Tyneside. This was formally recognised in 1985 when HMS Calliope was awarded the Roll of Honorary Freeman of the City of Newcastle. HMS Calliope also has a satellite unit, Ceres Division in Leeds, which maintains close links with its Tyneside unit.

Friday Fact: did you know there have been 5 ships and 1 shore establishment to bear the name HMS CALLIOPE?
1808: A 10-gun Cherokee-class brig-sloop launched in 1808 and broken up in 1829
1837: A 28-gun sixth rate launched in 1837. She was used as a floating chapel in 1860 and a factory from 1865. She was broken up in 1883.
... 1884 - 1951: A Calypso-class corvette or third class cruiser launched in 1884. She was used as a Royal Naval Reserve drill ship from 1905 and was renamed HMS Helicon in 1915 and took back the name of HMS Calliope in 1931. She was sold in 1951.
1914 - 1931: A C-class light cruiser launched in 1914, the lead ship of the Calliope subgroup. She was sold in 1931.
1952 - 1968: HMS Calliope was originally the Shoreham-class sloop HMS Falmouth. She was launched in 1932, and renamed HMS Calliope in 1952 when she replaced the 1884 HMS Calliope as the RNR's drill ship. She was broken up in 1968.
1968: One of fourteen #RoyalNavalReserve units, #HMSCalliope is a "stone frigate" situated in Gateshead on the banks of the #RiverTyne between the #TyneBridge and the #GatesheadMillenniumBridge
