About Holderness Fishing Industry Group

HFIG represents fishermen, fish merchants and processors on East Yorkshire's Holderness Coast. Our members work together to preserve and promote a healthy, sustainable and successful fishery. The cold North Sea waters of East Yorkshire's Holderness coast provide some of the UK's best quality seafood. Fishermen have worked this area for generations and today our catches are exported around the world. The modern fishery uses environmentally sustainable methods, has almost zero bycatch and supports more than 70 businesses. This is a time of unprecedented change for the Holderness fishery, though. More and more industries are staking a claim to the Yorkshire coast. When our fishery began, over 400 years ago, there were no wind farms and no gas wells. No-one was dredging for gravel, or digging trenches for pipelines and cables. There were no giant container ships, dragging miles of anchor chain across the seabed. Today, the seas are increasingly crowded and traditional fishing grounds are shrinking day by day. Nevertheless, the Holderness fishery survives and continues to provide hundreds of jobs and millions of pounds for East Yorkshire's economy. Low impact fishing methods, careful management and a commitment to sustainability have given us the healthy and successful fishery we have today. The Holderness Fishing Industry Group was formed in 2011, by Holderness fishermen, the fish merchants who buy and market their catches and the processors who cook and sell them. The Group's aim was to help them to work together, to protect this traditional fishery and ensure that it remains sustainable into the future.
