I believe that everything is better when a bit of cake is involved. I make a variety of flavours of sponge cakes, and cupcakes with different fillings and frostings for different occasion.
There's a lot that can be said for baked goods at the best of times, a sponge here, a slice of millionairre shortbread there, even the occasional macarron, it can give you a completely differernt outlook on whatever's on your mind.
