About Holmes Mill

Holmes Mill

Holmes Mill Description

Just over a year on and the big idea to bring this beautiful grade II listed building back to life, and enhance the features it holds in abundance, is really taking shape.

The Brewery and Beer Hall, at the heart of the whole complex, is a showcase for Bowland Beers.

The cafe, featuring a patisserie, bakery and the gelateria, serves a whole host of delicious Holmes Mill goodies.

There's the Food Hall, a celebration of fabulous produce from Bowland, from Lancashire and beyond. And now, with the addition of the Spinning Block Hotel and Bistro, Bar & Grill, there are even more reasons to visit.

What a find this place is. A wonderful conversion from an old cotton mill to a hotel. Rooms were large, light, modern and airy. Large Villeroy Bosch bathroom with l'occitane accessories. Everywhere was scrupulously clean, pleasant and had friendly and welcoming staff. The decor throughout the hotel was excellent. The restaurant which served excellent reasonably priced food with a varied menu had a comfortable lounge area to enjoy cocktails and after dinner drinks.

Well, where do I start? We knew Holmes Mill would be the venue for us the minute we stepped through the door to view it. Everything about the place reflected our personalities and style, it was just up our street.

We got married on 7.4.18, and was just so excited to see how things would unfold on our special day. All the way from the start, the events coordinators communicated so effectively and made sure every single aspect was discussed and catered for.

My partner is a wedding photographer and is at various wedding venues most weekends, but we can honestly say the service that Holmes Mill provides is second to none. We had nothing but compliments about how unique, quirky, friendly and relaxed HM was. We really feel it is a cut above the rest.

On the day, we cannot fault any aspect. The staff were out of this world. Stacey, Gemma and Emma especially were just outstanding, but the younger casual staff were also excellent. The food was also incredible, the chefs catered for many dietary requirements and the guests were more than happy.

We were apprehensive about using the Engine Room after the ceremony as it was very close to the visiting public. I can truly say we were in such a bubble with our friends and family we genuinely did not notice the public there! Any interaction we did have with members of the public were so positive and friendly and it was kind of nice to be made a fuss of!

I loved the flexibility HM provided. Nothing was ruled out, we were allowed to be as creative as we wished with the room dressing. We were bowled over with how amazing the room looked when we entered for the first time. It was really something special.

From morning until night, we were treated like royalty and made to feel so special. Everyone we dealt with went out of their way to make sure we were happy and I am so grateful for this. We had the most unbelievable day, and at the risk of sounding cliché, it truly was the best day of our lives.

The beauty of it is that we can now visit whenever we like and revisit all the treasured memories. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much.

We have just returned from a fabulous stay at the Spinning Block. The hotel is new and so everything was pristine. We also had a couple of afternoon drinks next door in Holmes Mill bar.

All I can say was we thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The place is stylish with a great atmosphere. Staff are friendly and helpful. We had a lovely meal in the Bistro on Thursday evening and the girl that was serving us was ultra efficient and very smiley. My only negative and I am sure I won’t be the last to say this, is the lack of parking. I really think the hotel guests should be able to park in the car park and not leave their cars on the roadside. Fortunately, the very nice receptionist let us park seeing as the long stay car park up the road expires at 6.00 pm.

Visited 13/01/18. We booked a table in the new bistro and stayed in the hotel over night. Although the hotel is not yet finished it is so nearly there and you wouldn't really know otherwise.

The finish of both are absolutely stunning and we had such a fantastic time. The staff and service were second to none and we couldn't have been met by a friendlier team.

The food in the bistro was delicious, we had a fish mixed grill and a steak and we both had empty plates and the cocktails and drinks also couldn't be faulted.

Thank you HM for a much needed break. We can't wait to be back.

User

The place just gets better every time i visit it.

Lovely coffee and cheesecake.

Bought fresh tumeric and spices for 'cooking'.

The range of beers very good.

I make sure every time Im in the area I visit Holmes Mill to get a stash of interesting foods.

User

Stayed for two nights over Easter. The hotel is lovely, we ate in both the bistro and the beer hall, and coffee shop. It is a lovely venue look forward to the spa and cinema opening.

We had a small issue with our table and reservations but this was dealt with swiftly and really positively by the bar manager and her staff. Excellent service.

The hotel was lovely great service at check in , we were shown to our room which is very pretty , the standard of finish is very nice and the shower was lovely so much so my husband didn’t come out for about 30 minutes!

User

Love this place, great food, great selection of beers snd ciders, both on tap and bottled. Also guest ales and Belgium beers. The waiting staff are excellent and cannot be nicer, Mia looked after us on our recent visit and cannot thank her enough, she was wonderful and very attentive. All staff friendly helpful and always service with a smile.

If i was to fault anything I would say it is lacking in a decent Gin selection, very limited, and now that there are hundreds (if not more) of craft Gins to choose from, it was disappointing to find only a basic choice of maybe 5 Gins which you for find in any back street pub.

Still a fantastic place and will always return.

User

Hen party of 30. Offered a great set menu. Had terrine followed by ribeye steak. Having asked how I liked it cooking it came perfectly cooked for me.

Great service too with a very happy male waiter and young waitress serving on.

Beautiful music played by pianist too.

Very nice place, very happy to return. Well done to all.

User

Great venue!! Went on Mother’s Day, enjoyed a walk round the food market, the crafty vintage fayre. in the function suite. Had a drink in the bar and then a meal in the bistro. Food and drink second to none and very accommodating with me and my 8 month old baby. Only criticism would be service was slow in the bistro not as in food but general reordering of drinks or desserts. Will definitely visit again as I was in no rush the surroundings are beautiful and can’t wait to return with my husband x

User

Food was great especially the Nachos starter. Staff were all very friendly, the choice of real ales was simply mind blowing and it was a great atmosphere. It’s a one off - treat yourself and try it out soon - you won’t be disappointed👍

User

Came in at the weekend for a drink and decided to eat while we were there. It was busy so finding an available table was proving difficult. Mia went out of her way to find us one, in a lovely area. The service we received from here was fantastic, even though she was busy. Thanks Mia for making our night great.

User

Attended a wedding at Holmes Mill in Clitheroe. What a fabulous venue. The accommodation was lovely and staff were very polite, friendly And helpful. Service at breakfast and during the wedding breakfast was excellent as was the food. Would highly recommend and definitely return.

User

We had lunch outside on Monday. This was not our first visit and like on our previous visits we had one cheese board and one meat board. I was though a tad disappointed with our boards on this visit. Small if not skinny portions and just salami on the meat board. I did mention this at the time but the waitresses were busy and just said they were the usual size. The bread was lovely....in fact I bought some bread and a lovely cheese and onion pie. My wine was lovely and my husband appreciated the cheap beers on offer but I was disappointed with the boards and would probably not have them again......but having said that there is a lot on the menu to try.

User

Great bar. Excellent range and great premises etc.

Service left a little to be desired with staff not being aware when people required serving. Also the wide range of beers wasn't very well displayed making it tricky to select from your full range. I did eventually find a clip board with the range on.

Great venue all in all, just minor 'niggles'

User

The Environment of the Food Hall, Beer Hall and Restaurants are great.

The selection of Cask Beers in the Beer Hall was fantastic and service very good.

However the food in the Beer Hall was very average. Refused ribs to start (not available 12noon Friday Lunch time ) !!! Chips were very poor, chewy and tasted stale. I suspect they were blanched and left for quite a while (maybe overnight) before re-frying in less than hot fat. The gravy was thin and tasteless and the mushy peas were dry and grainy. The pie filling itself was tasty but the pastry very stodgy.

All in all dissapointed. Lovely place food standard poor.

User

Hotel - lacked character, could have created something special in the rooms given the history & style of the old mill, but we may as well have been in a holiday inn. Staff on reception didn't seem interested on arrival & didn't ask if we'd had a good stay when we checked out.

Restaurant - walked out after 1 drink. We weren't greeted by anyone so ordered a drink from the bar. I said we were staying for food & could I open a tab, but the barman simply walked away after serving me. We sat for 15 minutes & were never offered a table or a menu.

Beer Hall - Saving grace & deserves 5 stars! Great choice of beers, great service & the food looked good. Knowledgeable bar staff d superb atmosphere & character.

If you could replicate the beer hall experience across the whole site it would be a great place to spend a whole evening.

User

Went in the beer hall for lunch Friday 16th Four of us. Busy but not over busy. Loads of staff on so couldn’t understand the 30 min wait on the drinks order, then 50 min wait for the starters !! I ordered chicken in a basket, which was slimey and not crispy as advertised! One of us ordered pie and asked for fries instead of chunky chips .... it came with chunky chips !

Lovely place but someone needs to be in control the service was shocking. And the prices !!!! Don’t mind paying if it’s worth it. !!

User

Slow service and cold food. Disappointed. Love the venue but the food was poor. Looking forward to a steak all week. Arrived late, had to ask for the sauce, steak was stone cold. Sent it back. Won’t go to Bistro again. Many others on our table also sent cold food back. A friends lamb wasn’t cooked properly also, not a good experience. Sorry.

User

Second visit today. Seemed quite quiet but a wedding party was expected about 1.5 hours after we arrived. Had to ask for menus but there did seem to be staff floating around. Ordered our food and then waited and waited - no mention of any delay. After approximately 35 minutes our meals arrived - too long. No apology, no explanation. My husband wasn’t offered the choice of sauce and when his meal arrived it was doused in gravy. Ordered more drinks and we could see them being prepared and then sitting waiting to be brought - again there seemed to be both food and bar staff free to do this. Food didn’t look appetitising but it did taste good. Our waiter asked if everything was OK. Explained the long delay and lack of choice - apologised and told us she would tell the supervisor. Two more waiters (as we thought) asked us if everything OK - we said we’d already given our feedback. When my husaband asked for the bill the original waiter explained a supervisor had been over. It turns out at least one of the staff had been a supervisor but never explained that nor apologised or explained the reason for the problem. Very poor example to set their staff and we were far from impressed. So buck up your ideas and impress on your staff, who ever they are that service comes first and foremost - your supervisors need to up their game too and take responsibility.
