As CAREGivers, we live by this...

Excellent programme on BBC Radio 4 tonight at 7:45 pm. Worth listening tonight if you have the chance!
"Flying Visits" starring Claire Rushbrook as a resourceful and conscientious care-worker pushed to the limits by a system that still relies on rushed, 15-minute homecare visits.

One of the best things about CAREGiving is what we can learn from older generations.

It’s a sad fact of life that there are so many scammers out there.
However, with a few simple steps and some honest conversations, you can help protect your loved ones and show them how to be secure and safe.
Elderly individuals are the most frequent target of scams. In fact, 1 in 20 have been victims. Fraudsters target the elderly because they may be lonely, willing to listen, and more trusting than younger individuals.
... Popular scams targeting the elderly include computer virus scams, anti-ageing products, overpriced hearing aids, financial investments, and insurance. Keep in mind that fraudsters don't always target the elderly over the phone- they also visit in person or through emails, letters or online.
Thankfully there are several things you can do to help protect your loved ones from scams.
1. Check on your loved ones regularly.
Sit down with your loved one and talk with them about scams. Explain the importance of not giving over personal information, bank info etc even if the person sounds genuine. Explain that any genuine person or company will be willing to allow them time to make decisions or to validate their authenticity.
2. Practice delay tactics
Even after discussing with your loved one about scams, they may still feel anxious or pressured when on the phone. Encourage them to use phrases such as "Let me discuss this with my family" or "I need time to consider this". Let your loved one know that it's always ok to hang up the phone.
3. Install a peephole on the door.
This is a great way to keep your older loved one safe. You may even consider adding an intercom system with an integrated doorbell. This way, your loved one can check credentials before opening the door.
4. Add them to the do not call list
Sign your loved one up to the Telephone Preferences Services. They’ll add you to their list of numbers that don’t want to receive sales and marketing calls. You can also call them to register on 0345 070 0707 or https://goo.gl/DTgHnt

Bring on the summer! ☀️
Being prepared for the summer heat is by no means easy. Staying cool is especially important for our elderly loved ones and clients. Here are 5 tops ways to keep cool as the summer warms up:
1. Stay hydrated! 💦... Keep a large water bottle or jug in the fridge and keep your glasses topped up throughout the day.
2. Keep cool as you snooze 😴 Swap your thicker sheets and covers to lighter, more breathable ones to help you keep cool.
3. Have plenty of cold foods on hand ❄️ Help keep your body temperature cool with an abundance of fruits from the fridge, treats from the freezer (our favourite: fill an ice cube tray with orange juice and add them to your water on the hottest days).
4. Furnish the home with blinds and shades 🔅 Direct sun heats up our homes. Simply using a shade in the windows can reduce your room's heat gain by as much as 77%!
5. Close off rooms that are lightly used. 🚪 This keeps the cool air where it's required most- where you are!
Remember, that over time our elders may be less able to care for themselves- especially if they live alone. If you’re questioning whether your older loved one can handle any of these tips on their own, it may be time to seek professional care.

Every Thursday afternoon for the past 22 years, Judy has played bridge with her friends from church.
This is one of the reasons she's not ready for residential care. Judy wants to keep living in her own home, doing what's important to her.
Our home help service allows her to do just that. By helping Judith with getting to appointments on time, light housekeeping, and medication reminders, we can help her with the tasks she finds difficult so that she can focus on the ones s...he enjoys.
Could your loved one do with a little extra help too?

Pets are just too good for us!
They are a consistent companion for all ages but can also provide a sense of purpose for ageing loved ones. Research has shown that just 15 minutes a day with an animal can lower your heart rate, blood pressure and stress!

Having "The Talk" with your parents is a daunting task for many families we support.
"How am I going to prepare Mum for the situation when the family can't always be there to care for her? How can I tell dad he could really benefit from a carer?
As with most things, there will never be a perfect time to have these conversations. I suggest, however, that you consider approaching the conversation sooner rather than later.
... Here are 4 things to remember when having the conversation about the future with your parents:
1. Timing is everything
Find a time when your loved ones are most at ease- preferably when it's just you and your family without distractions.
2. Listen, don't tell
We all prefer to be listened to, rather than told what to do. Even if your parent's goals are unrealistic, it's important to understand they may be going through a lot of changes and loss, so approach with care. Reassure them that you understand their wishes and you want the best for them.
3. Find a neutral ground
If other family members and siblings will be present, get together ahead of time and discuss the ideal outcome and who can contribute what.
4. Leave with a plan
This will create the next steps. Remember to take advantage of the tools available, including the legal power of attorney if necessary.
Lastly, after the conversation, do something fun and rewarding as a family. Go out to dinner, play a game- something you all enjoy.
At Home Instead, we've guided many families through situations such as these, and we understand the difficulties. If we can help you and your family, please give us a call and we'll be happy to help in any way we can.
