Homerton College, Cambridge Description

A page for our alumni, students, staff, and fans from around the world!

Homerton has one of the most unusual and fascinating histories of all the Cambridge Colleges. Its first premises were acquired in London in 1768 ŌĆō making 2018 the 250th anniversary of HomertonŌĆÖs foundation ŌĆō although its origins go back to the late seventeenth century. In that time Homerton has educated alumni of considerable influence; including prominent dissenting thinkers, educationalists, politicians, and missionary explorers. We have always had strong ties to public service as well as academia.

With around 600 undergraduates, 800 graduates, and 90 Fellows, it is now the largest College in terms of student numbers in Cambridge.

We never cease to be impressed by the passion and commitment and of so many Homerton students to issues of social change.
On of these students is Mary-Jean Mleya. Currently studying for an MPhil in African Studies at Homerton, Mary-Jean recently hosted an episode the human rights podcast Declarations.
The podcast centres around issues of race, political representation and human rights in the U.K, including a guest appearance by Simon Woolley, director of the organisation Oper...ation Black Vote & chair of the Race Disparity Advisory Group at 10 Downing St.
You can listen to the podcast on all podcast platforms (anchor, apple podcasts etc) or via the link below

Are justice and ethics inextricably connected or increasingly distinct? And where should the balance lie? In this yearŌĆÖs lecture Baroness Onora OŌĆÖNeill, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and former Principal of Newnham College, argues that the concepts have become dangerously separated, with ethics seen as culturally specific or even a matter of individual conscience, while justice aspires to universal standards. Can justice be realised if we donŌĆÖt take ethics seriously?
The lecture will take place at Homerton College on Thursday, 9 May 2019 at 5.15pm.
The event is free but you MUST register to attend. The lecture will be followed by a canap├® reception in the Great Hall. Tickets and information are available here: www.kateprettylecture.eventbrite.co.uk

For centuries discussions of justice and ethics were seen as linked domains of duty.
However, since the twentieth century there has been widespread acceptance that while justice is a matter of respect for human rights, other ethical standards lack justification. Is this approach coherent? And what are its implications for the way in which we make moral judgments?
Join us on Thursday, 9 May to hear renowned Philosopher and former Principal of Newnham College Onora O'Neill dis...cuss this issue in the 2019 Kate Pretty Lecture.

What is consciousness? Could Artificial Intelligence ever be conscious? Could we even ever prove that it was? And if we could, what would that mean to our society and our future?
A new film by Homerton Junior Research Fellow Dr Beth Singler addresses all these pertinent questions. Ghost in the Machine is the last in a quartet of short documentary films made with Cambridge University and international experts discussing topical issues within the field of artificial intelligence.
The film was made possible by generous funding from The Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, and the Science and Human Dimension Project at Jesus College, Cambridge.
