‪This 11th Dragoons button was found in Donnington, Newbury in 1992. It had originally been lost by a member of the regiment in either 1769 or 1774! Happily it now forms part of the regimental collection here at the museum.

75 years ago this week, the 11th Hussars were busy making preparations for Operation Overlord, the Allied Invasion of Normandy. All 245 vehicles belonging to the regiment had to be made waterproof, with the stipulation they must be able to wade ashore through 4 feet of water. This would not be the first seaborne landing by the regiment, as they had already done so in the Mediterranean, but this time they would need to land in deeper water.

With the 75th Anniversary of D-Day fast approaching, we have put together a small showcase in the museum showing the part taken by the 11th Hussars during Operation Overlord. Here they load a Daimler Armoured Car onto the landing craft ready for Normandy.

As part of our recent collections audit, we have been going through our uniforms in the museum store. Needless to say we had a bit of a shock when we came across the following!
In the pocket of a greatcoat that had belonged to an 11th Hussars Officer in the Second World War, we found the remains of some tickets, a coin and a box of condoms. Clearly this officer liked to be protected in and out of battle!

A member of the 10th Hussars collects firewood during the Boer War. Fires were essential for keeping warm in the cold winter nights outside and for cooking food. This particular Hussar has acquired a bicycle to aid him.

Members of the 11th Hussars train guard arriving in Berlin. As the Cold War set in after the end of WW2, trains were used to take supplies through Soviet controlled East Germany to the British sector of West Berlin. The British Army provided armed guards for these trains.

This half term week we are continuing our children's trail around the museum. New for 2019, Help Find Joey is a trail based around a real warhorse, his story can be read on our website below. As always, free entry for children under 16.
