I have been a nail technician since 1996
I decided to do nails after i was made redundant, i was tought by a friend who worked for Back Scratchers in London.
The first application i learned was fibre glass wraps, then progressed onto the gel nails.

How artificial nails gained popularity?
Women from Far East who grew their nails to extraordinary length were seen to have a special social standing in the society.
In ancient times, Egyptian women used to decorate their hands with artificial nails made out of ivory, bone or gold. This trend of adorning artificial nails still continues. However over the period, it has taken a different shape.
Artificial nails first became popular in America. Americans turned this age-old custom into a huge business and artificial nails are the most sought for when it comes to cosmetics today. Adhesives and polymers were experimented to develop artificial nails.
Know how artificial nails evolved
Initially monomers and polymers were mixed to create these nails. These nails were applied on the natural nail and were extended to a supporting material. This was left to harden and shaped to resemble a natural nail. This was known as acrylic artificial nails.
Today, the most common type of artificial nails is made out of plastic. The artificial nails are moulded just like natural nails and the colours are perfected using pigments that looked like our skin. The plastic nails come in different shapes and sizes.
How are artificial nails fixed?
Before fixing the artificial nails, the natural nails need to be cleaned using a cleanser. A cleanser is generally a solvent like an isopropyl alcohol that is applied to the surface of the nails to remove the grease and dirt.
Following this, the nails are primed using a primer. The nail is then placed on the edge of the nail bed. This step is followed by cutting the nail to the desired size and then shaping it as per the person's preference.
The nails are polished and made to look attractive. Or a an overlay of Gel or acrylics are placed over the false nail.
