If you visit on a clear day we were told you can see up to 20 miles away when at the top of the fort area. It has beautiful views of the Northumbrian landscape. The visitor centre on arriving is ran by the National Trust, there is a further centre with various displays and historical arifacts, ran by English Heritage, membership of either will get you into both. This is a great example of a Roman fort and is a worthwhile visit for all age groups.

Great little spot to explore a small part of Roman Britain with fantastic views and also some fantastic Roman remains. Dogs can go too just as long as they are on lead. The walk up to the remains is about half a mile and isn't suitable for wheelchairs. Parking is £3 for a car and of course there is the entrance fee too. Nice little shop at the entrance but a tad over expensive. The Roman helmet (Galea) was over £100 for a mediocre designed one.

Apart from that, well worth the visit.

Really interesting site with lots of information boards. Shame about the parking charges. We parked in a small lay-by a mile or so away and walked along the path back, so taking in sections of the walk. Bonus ☺

Based on the reviews for other Hadrian wall sites, we decided to give Housesteads are full attention. It was completely worth every penny. The site is extremely well preserved and the museum is a reasonable size considering the location. This is complemented well with a visit to the The Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle.

As an American, it's a bit hard to fully fathom ruins that are close to 2000 years old. Housesteads contains the fantastically well-preserved foundations of a Roman fort and section of Hadrian's Wall, in the middle of an incredibly picturesque part of northern England. The fort and Wall are reached via a somewhat steep hike but nothing too strenuous, and the hike takes visitors through active sheep fields, a poignant reminder that for centuries, this land has not been a tourist destination but the active home of local farmers. This was easily one of the highlights of our recent trip and is highly recommended.

Amazing experience. Decently preserved ruins, especially with such hostile history. The latrines were very cool, as a civil engineer, definitely my favorite part. This was much greater than just seeing the wall.

What a fantastic day out with the family. Such an interesting history. It is hilly and there isn't much wheelchair access...my had a broken foot when we visited, but there is a visitors centre / museum. Worth a long visit. The scenery is stunning.

Fantastic view from the top however, getting to the top requires a certain level of fitness! The fort is beautifully preserved but we would have preferred to see it bought to life with more detailed signage because without a guided tour, explanations were missing. We would have loved a cup of tea at the top but hey, that's just us being English!

A fair hike from the car park to the ruins, but once you're there, you get a fascinating insight into what life was like for the Romans living on the wall. Beautiful scenery wherever you look too - well worth a visit.
