Howsham Mill Description
On a tiny island in the River Derwent at Howsham, North Yorkshire, stands a Georgian watermill. Howsham Mill dates back to c. 1755 and is attributed to John Carr of York, more famous for designing Fairfax House in York, and an extension to Castle Howard stables. In 1965, a Royal Commission for Historic Monuments inspector, James Williams, described the Mill as ". . . a building of the maximum historical interest as a very early example of gothic Revival style…" and ". . . of great architectural interest as it is a very rare example of the gothic Revival style as applied to a functional building. (I cannot find reference to a similar example, eg watermill)…".

Very informative & enthusiasic lady made it a interesting visit.
The most interesting and inspiring renewable/ restoration project we haver ever visited.
Really interesting, informative and incredibly beautiful place! We visited with a group of volunteers to learn about renewable energy and flood coping strategies. Our guides were very informative and very lovely, and we all had a thoroughly enjoyable day. I'd very much recommend a visit, either educational or for fun. And a big thank you to all involved!
Really interesting tour. I remember it from the 90s when it was an overgrown ruin. It is great to see it cared for and working.
Me and daughter visited today for the Woodland Arts day and it was just brilliant (we had been last year for den building which was fab too. I'm so pleased to see that you are now charging a fee (although I'd still be happy to pay more) as it's your time and all the materials you use etc. Today was just wonderful. The perfect weather, a great variety of activities. My daughter loved them all. Her favourite was painting a picture, made from paints she'd made herself using all things nature. Lovely idea and shows how creative you can be with leaves and even mud!!! The surroundings are beautiful - perfect for our picnic lunch! Lots of space for the children to run around and play - or cartwheel and perform acrobatics like Izzy :-) Loved every second and look forward to returning again! Thank you very much for a great day!! X
I've watched the way in which Howsham Mill has developed, since its inception as a Water Mill designed to produce electricity.
I'm delighted to see how it has expanded into an Education and Community Centre for both national and international visitors.
Congratulations to all involved in this achievement!
Having slipped on the path on the other side of the river and was wet from the waist down my experience was decidedly moist! Looking at the before and after pictures extremely impressed with the rebuild
Had a brilliant time today with Helen on the Family Forest School day. Kids loved it and great surroundings, activities and other families.
Brilliant building. Will come again.
