Hello my name is Craig and I’m a Specialist Inspector (Mechanical Engineering), in Health and Safety Executive’s Field Operations Division.
My main responsibility is to support investigations into accidents at work, where mechanical equipment is involved. This requires me to understand how the equipment works (or should work), determine the risks associated with it and then provide an opinion on whether the risks were adequately controlled or not. I also provide advice to com...panies on how they can improve their equipment or operations to ensure they meet the minimum standards specified in the relevant regulations. I may also be called as an expert witness during legal proceedings, where I must answer questions on the findings in my report.
My responsibilities are really varied, which has allowed me to put into practice the skills gained earlier in my career, as well as develop lots of new ones!
My first job after university was as a site engineer at a nuclear power station, where I led projects associated with the maintenance, repair and replacement of nuclear safety equipment. After 3-4 years at site I decided to change my focus to the nuclear design process, so I started a new role as a design engineer. I was responsible for the design and analysis of lifting equipment, pressure vessels and piping to international design codes and standards.
The best thing about my job is the variety of equipment, processes and industries I get exposed to. I can think of no other mechanical engineering job which provides the opportunity to understand and influence so many different industries. Since starting with the HSE, the sites and workplaces I have visited range from construction sites and machine shops to fairgrounds and microbreweries! I had little to no previous knowledge of a lot of the equipment I saw at these sites, however I was given time to do research and with the support of my colleagues I quickly learned what to look out for and consider.
However, it’s not just the variety which I love, I also get a sense of satisfaction from knowing that the advice I provide during inspections and visits may help to save someone’s life someday.
If you are interested in joining our Mechanical Engineering Team you can find out how at https://bit.ly/2IL8bfD

Unfortunatley, this year’s Trainee Inspector campaign has been cancelled. Due to the success of last year’s campaign we were able to fill this year’s positions with those on our reserve list.
We know that this will be extremely disappointing for those of you that were waiting for the campaign start. However, we will be doing a campaign next year, so please stay tuned for updates.

Hello, my name is Andy and I’m a Specialist Electrical Inspector in Health and Safety Executive’s Field Operations Division (FOD).
As part of the FOD Specialist Group, I’m responsible for providing electrical expertise to Regulatory Inspectors on electrical engineering concerns, but also leading investigations into the electrical aspects of incidents at the request of the regulatory teams. This can be anywhere in the north of the UK.
I joined HSE in October 2017, but before ...that I have had a varied and wide experience in a number of industries including shipbuilding/repair, aerospace, defence, building management and services and the Nuclear industry.
What I love about working in HSE is the variety, no two days are the same and every investigation or intervention challenges my skills and knowledge. I also thoroughly enjoy the training I am undertaking, and I find the investment in my Continued Professional Development a huge bonus.
