About Hulme Community Garden Centre

A garden centre with a difference that makes a difference!

Hulme Community Garden Centre Description

Hulme Community Garden Centre (HCGC) is a unique community led inner-city horticultural project and charity. Our mission is to bring the local community together through gardening. As a not-for-profit organisation we provide low-cost plants to the local community but we are foremost a volunteer and education hub promoting horticultural and sustainability issues to schools, colleges, the local community and wider public. We are a community resource in two of Manchester's most deprived areas, Hulme and Moss Side, providing a community garden space and running free workshops for the local community, a wide range of socially excluded groups (in particular people with learning disabilities and /or mental health problems), schools and voluntary organisations. HCGC is underpinned by organic principles and promotes sustainability, horticulture and the environment, civic engagement and voluntary activity, urban gardening and food production, independent living, health and well-being. We also provide back to work and skills training and placements for longer-term unemployed people. We have been established for 10 years and now welcome over 5, 000 visitors per annum, all of whom have access to free expert horticultural advice.

It's our Garden Explorers group this Thursday, 6th June (11am-12noon)πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Come and join us for our Parent & Toddler group at the garden centre. 🌳 Every week we do a different activity...outdoors if possible, in the polytunnel if it's REALLY wet and cold. Always fun, often muddy and usually a bit nibbly :-) No need to book...just turn up. Β£3 per child, tea/coffee and juice included.

Another lovely article about the benefits of being outdoors. My first job after leaving university was on a city farm in London and one of my proudest achievements was launching The Coriander Club with a dedicated bunch of Bengali women growers at Spitalfields Farm so it's great to see it mentioned in the article 20 odd years later. Oooohhhhh what a lovely article and delicious illustrations too. Why not join our Gardening for Wellbeing group which runs every Friday at 1.30pm and see for yourself how nature can boost your mood? Simply turn up at 1.15 to register if it's your first session...just some very simple paperwork to complete and a quick orientation tour.

Tim emptied the shop last week for a big re-arrange (do come and admire the new layout!) and these little folks squeezed an extra play opportunity in! They'd already begrudgingly left the mud kitchen and treehouse so were delighted to find a whole new play space!

Critter of the day! - an occasional diary of critters spotted by Colin around the garden centre. 🌱Here we have the Corizus hyoscyami AKA the cinnamon bug! 🌿 Until recently, a species confined to sandy habitats in the south of England (although widespread in Southern Europe). But with the change in climate in has spread rapidly and can now be found as far North as Grimsby(arguably a less glamorous destination than its usual Mediterranean hang out). πŸƒIt has now adapted to a mu...ch wider range of habitats. At a mere 9mm long, this mini critter would fit on your little finger nail!🌱 . . #climatechange #climate #nature #bbcwild #insectsofinstagram #bugs #hulmegardencentre #hulme #greeningthecity

Join us tomorrow from 12-3 for banner and costume making...or simply running wild!

We now have new and improved instant raised beds in stock - slightly narrower at 73cm they are still 120cm long but are now 26cm deep, meaning you only need two layers to make a really substantial raised bed. Just one layer would be perfect for herbs or salad crops. They are still just Β£15 a layer. As always we recommend lining them to increase their life... the perfect way to use up your empty compost bags!!

Well that was a lovely session today, making things for the Carnival of Creatures parade this coming Saturday. Come and join us again this Wednesday (29th) for more freestyle making of headwear, placards and whatever else you like to make yourself fabulous for the parade!
